Personality: Optimistic, but used to taking the rough with the smooth. Accustomed to independence.
History: Rothana is the eldest in a family of five girls. She informally apprenticed herself to her father, a blacksmith, having a definite interest in his trade. This was extremely fortunate, as her father died when she was seventeen. Since then, she has helped to support her family by working as a silversmith, although the occupation is unusual for one of her gender. Most of her work is with jewelry, ornamentation, and housewares, but in her spare time, she has been experimenting with new steel preparation techniques.

History: Currently on her own, due to her family perishing in the war. Had a mercenary stint for several years, but has had enough of that. Now, the only way for her to earn money is to circulate through towns and villages, challenging all comers and placing bets on her success. It has worked so far - not all the time, but enough to keep her alive.

Personality: Strong-willed, innovative, intelligent, and aggressive. Suspicious of strangers, and readier to find problems than to fix relationships. He has some lessons to learn.

X-Men:

Name: Danele "Dani" Ramos

History/Background: Spanish father, Basque mother. Her parents were wary of her mutation and took her to several doctors, who declared that they could do nothing about it. Not wanting to split up the family or send her away, Dani's parents insisted that she learn to control her powers. She lived with them until she was eighteen, when they were killed in one of Apocalypse's cullings. Magneto found her and helped her to bring her powers to their full potential.

Good RP Moments:

Half an hour later, Dani found herself being suspiciously inspected from a distance. Following the gaze, she recognized the barkeeper, who obviously remembered her and was anxiously examining his wine-list. She decided not to disappoint him.

"Good evening," she greeted as she glided up to the bar. "If you could find me a Petit-Vedrines Sauternes, I would be much obliged indeed. Remember, the year is extremely important."

He pushed himself away from the bar with a barely audible groan, again heading down cellar. But the request itself had caught the attention of another guest, who turned to Dani with piercing green eyes.

"Another connoisseur, I see." He raised his own long-stemmed glass in salute.

Dani flicked a flirtatious gaze at the tall man with the clipped, distinctly British accent. Black-haired and impeccably dressed, he was definitely someone she should get to know better. "It takes rare taste to enjoy a rare wine," she agreed, stepping closer. "I'm afraid I don't have the pleasure of your acquaintance."

"Well, then, we shall have to remedy that." He bowed very slightly over her proffered hand. "Ernest Reeves, very much at your service."

"Danele Ramos," she smiled, rolling the R. She felt the power roiling just underneath the skin of his hand. A mutant, then. But it was more than likely that he had no ideas she was also one.

He caught the lilt of her accent. "Madrid or Barcelona?"

"Madrid." She lifted the glass the barkeeper had returned with. "To old wine and new friends, then.
Salud."

"Cheers." ...

As Dani savored the taste of the Sauternes, her new acquaintance turned to make another inquiry. "Have you no escort this evening?"

"No, not this evening," she answered, following his eyes to the dance floor, where couples performed a sedate foxtrot to the light jazz of the band.

"Would you care to do me the honor?"

"My pleasure," Dani responded, but he withdrew before she could take his arm. She watched as he walked over to the band to request a different piece. Returning, Ernest took her hand and drew her onto the dance floor, pulling her into the taut embrace of an Argentinian tango.

The dance floor cleared as the other couples failed to keep up with the energetic rhythm, but Dani had been born to dance. Holding herself straight to maintain the tension between them, she pulled back with the long abrupt steps born in the slums of Buenoes Aires. The red-slashed black of her skirt flared in the turns, lunges, and dips of the dance, her pounding heart keeping time, her senses keenly aware of his right hand ridged under her bare left shoulder-blade.

The rest of the room shrank to a blur as the couple whirled and stepped in the sheer intoxication of the dance. And across the city, a long grandfather clock in Sinister's headquarters struck twelve lonely notes.

As the last gong faded, all of the security stations in the building activated simultaneously, the same message flashing across their green status screens:
ESPERANZA VIDA

Name: Valera Starsteel, Jedi Padawan
Homeworld: Coruscant
Species: Human
Age: 17
Appearance: Short, wiry, combat fit. Long gold-blonde hair, purple eyes.
Dress: Jedi robes when in the field, but, being a city girl, prefers a violet unitard and black leather surcoat when training. Field boots and standard utility belt at all times.
Weapons: Light sabers and starfighters are fine, but Val's collection of hidden knives is preferable. Light saber blade: white - either colorless or all colors.
Skills: Proficient with the Force, but realizes that too many Jedi use it as crutch. Specializes in unarmed combat and Escrime (the art of the blade). Noted skill in reconnaisance.
Personality: Highly individualistic, but understands the value of teamwork. Tenacious, determined, slightly workaholic, but tends to be cynical.
History: Val was born on Coruscant to Lord Vectmer Starsteel of Melbar, a highly influential trading world. At the age of four, she was noticed to be Force-sensitive, and brought to the Jedi Temple to train. She doesn't like to flout her heritage, but realizes that it can be used as political leverage, if needed. Hence, her friends usually call her "Lady Valera" or "Lady Val" when they wish to be irritating. She has been in the field for the past several months with her master, Saywe Turtho, and is currently preparing for the Jedi Trials.

New one! Playing: SW: Aftermath of the War

Name: Subcommander Tenil na'Tatha
Homeworld: Taarin
Species: Human
Age: 24
Appearance: Height - 5'6". Ear-length black hair, blue eyes, two small scars across left eyebrow.
Dress: Soldier's, dull green forest camo with black utility vest and belt, boots.
Weapons: Standard Taarin ground specialist's issue - sidearm, blaster rifle equipped with grenade launcher and sighting equipment, Taarin parallel-bladed close-combat knife.
Skills: na'Tatha specializes in political science and diplomacy, but has six years of actual off-world combat experience fighting trading-route pirates. Also, due to intense ground specialist training (Earth equivalent: American Green Berets), can deal with medical emergencies, night combat, and undercover ops.
Personality: Practical, stubborn, argumentative, but knows how to take orders. Has a strong sense of duty and honor. Only a few have truly broken through her hard outer shell, but she would fight to the death to protect those who have.
History: Hand-picked for the Taarin military at the age of ten, na'Tatha - for so everyone calls her, except for extremely close friends - was pushed to realize every inch of her combat potential. Separated from her family, she developed a psychological block to emotion and pain, and now can hardly remember them. Recently promoted to Subcommander, she has been assigned as the Taarin liason to the Jedi, even though she believes that the Taarin are thoroughly capable of handling the Maedan situation by themselves.

Good RP Moments:

It was the first time she had worn this newly tailored uniform, and she felt equal to the occassion - a formal promotion dinner - even though it was on board a Maedan/Taarin patol ship, commissioned to hunt down interstellar pirates. The deep blue dress fit smoothly, its hem tickling her knees pleasantly. She'd polished every medal and button on her jacket, and the cream-yellow sash around her waist was knotted with military precision. The best part, though, was her dinner partner. Mattan ha'Nor had befriended her when she was ten, a new admit to training, and welcomed her into his circle of friends. Now, nine years later, he was everything she could have wanted in a friend or brother - and the only person who ever called her by her first name.

Tenil.

They had been standing outside the room, waiting to go in, and Mattan had tried to steal a kiss - the one they had never shared. She'd pushed him away playfully, protesting in the name of protocol. Their turn to enter came, and the following two hours ranked among the best in her life.

The banquet was at its height when the alert alarms began flashing. There was a garbled message from the skeleton bridge crew before the doors to the room were blasted away and chaos ensued. They'd been boarded by the very pirates they were hunting, and now were weaponless against them.

In the hail of pirates' blaster bolts that followed, she'd overturned their table to form a temporary shield. But Mattan was no longer there. He'd reached one of the armory lockers on the wall, ripped off the cover, and was distributing blasters as fast as possible.

He was, she realized, an obvious target.

She'd leapt toward him, screaming "Get down!", but it was too late. She caught him as he fell, and felt her heart break as he smiled, whispering "Tenil" as the life ebbed out of his body.

Life was simple after that. It was simple to pick up a blaster rifle with shock-numbed fingers, simple to pick out targets in the smoke-filled room, simple to cut down the invaders one by one. na'Tatha felt no pain, no anger, no fear, and no emotion. She shot, they died, just like in an entry-level training simulation. Simple.

After the haze cleared, she sat motionless by Mattan's body, wondering at what had just happened. It wasn't until they put him into an empty torpedo shell and ceremonially set him adrift in space that she discovered the fact - Tenil was gone. na'Tatha the soldier remained, but Tenil the woman had died with Mattan.

======

So it was war - but na'Tatha wasn't about to go into it with the Maedan one up. Two steps took her to a position behind the two Maedan officials, with only the officer to worry about. She opened her fan with an emphatic snap, focusing all the attention in the room upon herself.

"Master Faradej, I think these high-ranking Maedan will be accompanying us back to Taara." ...

na'Tatha started herding the Maedan officials forward, then instinctively whirled, closing her
tassen in a high block, preventing the Maedan officer's own fan from slicing open her throat. Parrying, na'Tatha slid into a fighting stance, facing off with the man - and ducked as the female Maedan's tassen swept over her head. Stepping to the side, the subcommander grabbed the woman's arm and flipped her over her shoulder, sliding the fan out of her grasp as she let her drop, winded.

na'Tatha now held two of the colorful silken weapons, one in each hand, snapping them open in a fluid defensive posture as the officer came in again. Letting her mind clear, she readied herself to react spontaneously, giving in to her trained, automatic responses.

Grace. Fluidity. You are the tassen, steel wrapped in silk.

I know a few military ppl like that - they get hardened by training. I'm not saying they all are; just some - it's how they react personally. I know some who are the most incredible wonderful ppl ever.

I think it really depends on whether or not you're cut out for it. I thought about going to the Air Force Academy for a while.
