both sides think the other is evil. its just that the people who are viewing the story are forced to believe which side is the good one.

In the own different sides view points there is both evil and good. It all goes back to the balance in which every aspect of the this earth tries to achieve.

I don't think that he was evil form the beginning and I think that he knew that what he was doing wasn't ok, but once he became evil he didn't want to become good again, because he was too proud to say sorry and because he liked having power... just my thoughts...

I don't think anyone is completely evil to begin with. Something has to sway them to become the way they are. Saruman was probably very interested in all this power that Sauron was offering him, so he began to think of himself as high and mighty [possibly comparing himself to the Valar], and eventually began to believe it himself till he was corrupt.

I don't think he was evil to begin with, by what I can assume of Gandalf, he tursted him. And Gandlaf could tell something was up almost immediately. And I don't even think he was corrupted, I think he did it out of fear. And then, maybe once he realised the power he could get, he didn't really feel like going back. I dunno, just my thoughts

Saruman was ambitious to begin with. The corruption due to the Palantir simply added to this, creating an "evil" character, loyal to no one.

definetely... *agrees with Saavik* I also think that the Palantir influenced his way of thinking quite a lot...

Palantir. I do not think so. It was covered all over till Gandalf comes to Isengard.

are you sure?? Saruman tells Gandalf that he has seen Sauron when he arrives at Isengard so I think he has already looked into it before.

And he covered all over Palantir. Does not sound right?? but it could happen. Saruman talks about Sauron that Sauron was at full strength. Saruman does not talk to Sauron yet one on one. The fire of Mount Doom can be seen at long distances even by anyone who looks at that way.

hm.. I don't know... I've always understood it that way, that Saruman has looked into the Palantir before and has seen Sauron's power and all that..

It could have happened. I have taken the impression that he has not looked into Palantir before Gandalf gets in here. But there is one sentence that you might be right about your claim. We must join with him, Gandalf he says. Maybe you are right. He has seen it and offered to share the power.

Well, I'm not sure if "corrupted" is the right word, I think he was more driven out of fear. No doubt he looked into the Palantir and saw the destruction of Middle-earth and lost all hope. Naturally he joined what he thought was the winning side.
