'the quest will claim his life' ...yeah! in the end, we all are going to die, sooner or later, if we succeed in our quest, we live a happy and good life, if we fail...well, you'll guess what then happens! (sorry for this religious thingy, and sorry if you're not a christian, but i hadto put it in...) but we all are going to go to our own Valinor, grey Havens, in the end...to the place where there is no pain or evil, where we can live forever...

Not Necessarily True..XD. I'm a guy, and I cried during "The Grey Heavens" scene myself. the goodbyes between everyone were just too sad. I tried to hold back, but when Frodo and Sam bid farewell to each other, and the whole thing with Frodo's Sad smile- That was my breaking point. Seriously.

I cried when all the hobbits were saying good-bye with all those hugs, especially Sam. It was hard not to.
And ^don't take this the wrong way, but it was rather refreshing to hear a guy admit that he cried. Sorry, i'm done.

yeah every time i get to the scene i automatically start crying cuz i know what's coming...but the smile, necessarily not a sad one, because frodo expects sam to sail to valinor some day...i think its kind of a hopefully-see-you-soon - smile...

Everytime I watch the movie, I always start crying at that scene. It is so sad, but there is happiness to it as well, since they are going to Valinor. I don't consider it as "death" necessarily, as they aren't really truly dying. However, I do understand what you're getting at, because he isn't ever going to be able to return to Middle-earth, and for those there, it is a certain death. I've always kind of compared Valinor to Heaven, so I do know what you mean.

^Yeah me too. I start immediately crying. The first time i watched ROTK, it was really tough, I was down for the next 5 days, and I was little, and didnt always catch the subtitles, so I didnt understand why he had to leave, and I automatically considered it as death, because the 3 hobbits were crying. I got nearly traumatized. Now I understand it was better for Frodo to live in peace and bliss, but never see Middle-Earth and his friends again, than to live in Middle-Earth and suffer.

But one thing I dont understand is:

a) Why Valinor isn't considered as MIddle-Earth, but something else and

b) why did Elrond's, Galadriel's and Gandalf's Rings have to be 'destroyed' or that they lost their power??? Was it because they didn't want anymore harm caused by Rings into Middle-Earth?

And why I consider the Grey Havens scene a very sad and depressing one, is because it was the end of many things: The Third Age, Frodo's, Gandalf's, Elrond's and Galadriel's lives in Middle-Earth, the Numenoreans' line (well, after Aragorn's death actually), there's not a mighty elf-Lord in Rivendell, or any elves anymore, there's no one to keep up the Golden Wood, there's not the friendly old wizard to guide the peoples with their problems, Sam's best friend is gone, the Shire will never be the same again after Saruman had destroyed it etc... that's what mostly makes me weep.

Yes, one of the saddest and most touching endings to a movie in a long time for sure. I would say it is death but a peaceful one none the less. So I suppose it is bittersweet.

^Took the words out of my mouth. ;) All you people have such deep thoughts! :) I agree that it wasn't death, because he was going there in his physical body, and he (or the Elves, for that matter) wouldn't have gone there had he died. I think i read somewhere that Tolkien said that since Frodo and Bilbo are mortal, they will eventually die. (It's a gift of Iluvatar that we mortals may pass beyond the circles of the World, and not be bound to Time forever--and no-one, not even the Valar, are allowed to take that away.) However, he would spend the remainder of his days in basically a paradise, finding healing for his wounds, and eventually Sam would come west to be with him again.
But yeah, i cry at that scene. Or just thinking about Frodo's sailing. It's nice to hear that you have too, Edward. :)

Yeah I think it would be well, somehow boring to be here you know all the time. We are men... (but sometimes I wish i'd be an elf...)

If I understand you correctly, I agree. I wouldn't want to stay here, or even in Valinor, forever. There are people already dead that I want to see again! (If you believe in heaven, which i do. ;) ) And I can't do that if I stick around here. Time is really sort of weary, you know? I believe we find it so strange (i.e. Where did the time go?/Can you believe it's been that long?) because we were created for eternity. But yeah, sometimes i wish i could be an Elf, too. :)

just thinking of Gray Havens makes me feel bad and my heart starts to bleed every time. I knew some people say that Frodo really dies and that the end is a metaphor. I had this thought too because when I see the scene of Gandalf coming with the eagles to rescue the hobbits, Frodo seems to be an angel flying to Heaven while he is between the eagle's claws and the boat could be an image of death. This scene has always given me this feeling. But really I don't believe this. Even though I can't accept Frodo leaving his friends and homeplace I don't see the last scene as related to death even though there is death in my heart. I see it as a scene of endless pain and melancholy but Frodo's last smile (that kills me) tells me that there is no death but a new hope

The same thing happened to me. I didn't know where they were really going or what was really happening at the time, so I too automatically considered it as death. I was so sad for days, and I desperately wanted to find out where they were going and what was happening to them. The only thing that gave me any consolation was "Into the West", because some of the lyrics gave me hope.

I don't think about death, I don't want to think about it, but thinking about leaving forever is to me too similar to death, and if I think they will have a new life with all their wounds healed gives me little relief. It's so beautiful seeing the hobbits return to the Shire at the end of their journey and it is so painful seeing the leaving after. All I can say is that I would not like to see that last scene anymore

I personally wouldn't say that I wouldn't want to see it anymore, because despite all of its sadness, it's so perfect. Although it really is depressing and extremely sad, I can't see LotR ending any other way, and it really is a perfect ending. It completes everything so well.
