What do you think?
Personally, I found the Mouth of Sauron in the movie to be terrible. They showed him as BLIND!!!!! Actually, in the EE version of the movie, in the documentary part, Rick Porras actually says that the book doesn't say anything about his eyes! For me, the staredown between Aragorn and the Mouth of Sauron in the book was a big deal. And then they go and spoil it in the movie. And to top it off, they have Aragorn cut his head off! It's a PARLEY!!!!!! Aragorn just showed complete disrespect for the rules of parley. It's about the same as ignoring a flag of truce! And he ignored it! AGH!!!!!!!

....

So....what do you guys think of that scene?

To be honest, I really loved that scene. I think they should have kept it in the theatrical version of the moive.

I think it was quite good. Pretty much like it was described in the book.

The first time it mentions him is in the chapter The Black Gate Opens.

The part that really bugged me, due to its absence in the movie (in part), was this:

He it was that now rode out, and with him came only a small company of black-harnessed soldiery, and a single banner, black but bearing on it in red the Evil Eye. Now halting a few paces before the Captains of the West he looked them up and down and laughed.
'Is there anyone in this rout with authority to treat with me?' he asked. 'Or indeed with wit to understand me? Not thou at least!' he mocked, turning to Aragorn with scorn. 'It needs more to make a king than a piece of elvish glas, or a rabble such as this. Why, any brigand of the hills can show as good a following!'
Aragorn took the other's eye and held it, and for a moment they strove thus; but soon, though Aragorn did not stir nor move hand to weapon, the other quailed and gave back as if menaced with a blow. 'I am a herald and ambassador, and may not be assailed!' he cried.

Yeah. That part was one of my favorites in the book, and it's nowhere in the movie, and they made the Mouth of Sauron blind. And then said it never mentioned anything about his eyes.
And they had Aragorn break a parley. That gets on my nerves so bad...that and the Witchking vs. Gandalf. Grrr. :lightsabre:

When things like that happen, I just remind myself that it is a movie and not the book. And that it is Peter's version - so I keep an open mind. And, because of that, I enjoyed this scene - I absolutely loved it actually.. it's one of my favourites of RotK and I am not all that bothered about the absence of the Mouth's eyes.. I think the design of his mouth was perfect.. especially the slits.. how they opened when he spoke.

And, I'm not bothered by Aragorn breaking the parley.. the reaction of those who havent read the books when Aragorn cuts off the Mouth's head is great! They all love it - they said it adds tension or something of the like to the moment leading up to the battle - which makes us remember that it wasn't made purely for us Tolkien fans - which we all already know.

But, having said that, I prefer Tolkien's version of it anyday.. ^^

Grrr....Mornie, they did worse than not putting it in the theatrical - they put it in the Extended, and they ruined that too, by making the Witch-king seem more powerful. Pfft. So. Incredibly. Upsetting.

Gandalf is the most powerful person in Middle-earth except for Sauron, for crying out loud!!!!!! Grrr.

I liked it, and you never get to see his eyes so you don't really know if hes blind or not. So what if it didn't fallow the book. The book's a book and the movies a movie they wanted to make it more entertaining.

....who in their right mind would walk around with a helmet over their eyes if they could see anything? That'd just be....dumb, and not at all safe/healthy. Especially when you're talking to enemies who are there to fight, and have almost no other idea except that they are there to die.

The movie was made from the book, so Peter should have at least tried to get that part down accurate....and they certainly didn't have to actually say that the book never mentions his eyes, because I already did list a passage where it did mention them.

I thought the attittude and scorn for aragorn that the MOS had was right but aragorn cutting off his head was crap as I think that Gandalf was meant to beat the herald of sauron (as it were) with the words that the MOS used to convince mordors allies to fight against teh west. Kinda symbolistic......

Hear hear Arandir. It always bothered me that Aragorn disregarded the rules of negotiation, quite disgracing. PJ got some cheap points there when he tried to please the mainstream crowd like this. *shakes head* Everyone was cheering and laughing when Aragorn cut his head off, but they didn't stay true to Aragorn's character....
