That's a good poitn Elly. The movies were based on the books, but ultimately the movies are PJ's vision and not Tolkien's. Tolkien's Middle-earth belongs to the books. They are the same place, yet they're different. Maybe I don't make any sense, but it's kind of interesting to think about.

You make sense, to me at least. That's what I think of them. They're the same, yet different. It's the same story, but then again, it's not the same story.

Thank goodness I make sense to someone!
That's just the way it is. Tolkien's Middle-earth is the true Middle-earth. An infinite number of Middle-earths exist because everyone who reads LOTR has a different idea of Middle-earth. Ours aren't wrong, but Tolkien's is the only true one, the only real one. At least that's my thoughts on it.

NO!!! That was one of PJ's biggest deviations from the real story(curse his eyes) The whole warg fight/ Aragorn off the cliff sequence never actually happens. Remember, all the women and children are sent to Dunharrow in the mountains when Theoden decides to fight. Only Theoden and his men actually take the road to Helm's Deep. And they aren't attacked on the way!

Obviously, you're right, that was not in the book, but as PJ explained it. He needed another example of Arwen and Aragorns connection to keep that part of the story alive. I personally think it was nicely done.
I don't have a problem with either the film or the book, the film is an interpretation that works on screen.

Thats a good point Dumanyu. I didn't think about that aspect of it. We would kind of forget about Aragorn and Arwen without that scene. That was one of few things I liked better about the movies was that they included a lot more of Aragorn and Arwen's beautiful story.

Darrell is right, the only time the fellowship is attacked by wargs is on the way 2 moria whoever said that is cool. The only other time it is safe to assume that there were any other wargs encountered in battle by the fellowship was at the pellenor where some of the commanders may have ridden wargs, so PJ may be right in that respect but all of Sarumans wargs were killed by the Ents lol. Namarie!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I thought Warg attack was a fantastic additon to the TT. In my opinion TTT was the worst of the books and a bit heavy and took a while to read. PJ livnded it up! Though I dont like Aragorn falling with style!!

You need to make changes when basing a film on a book. Be honest with yourselves, if they didnt miss naything out of LOTR the movies would be very dull especially in TT when Frodo and Sam are walking through Ithlien(sp?)

I didn't think that it happened, but I was never entirely sure.

Wow sounds like Darrell knows what he is talking about. TTT is easier to read than fotr, but it is the most unlike the movies of all 3. I mean the elves don't even come to Helms Deep! Aragorn does not fall of a cliff! i mean they made him fall of a cliff just so he see's the uruk-hai! I mean thats just not cool. I loved when the wargs attacked outside of Moria when they were in the small cavern/cave. (by the way thats in fotr) But that wasn't in the book either.
I am a lotr freak, and love JR. But I think New line Cinema added some unnecessary parts.
Personally i wish the elves from Lothlorien did come in the books to aid Theoden.
what do you think?

Not at all, actually. They don't need to be there because in the book, Eomer was there and even soldiers from the Westfold were there. The Lothlorien elves wouldn't be neccessary to defend Helm's Deep.

I quite agree with Princess of Ithilien but it would have been nice to have elves helping Theoden. :-D

Ok this is going off-topic, but oh well.

Personally I don't see why Jackson really needed to change anything. I don't think he understands just how popular the LOTR books are (2nd most read book ever, even before the films).

I think you're wrong to say that PJ doesn't understand how popular the books are, because if you see interviews with him you'll see that he loves the books as much as anyone.

As for the changes - of course he didn't have to make them, but I think some parts of TTT would've been slightly dull without them. Like the fight with the wargs - if it hadn't been there, they'd just have been walking from one place to another, which doesn't make a very good movie. The alternative would've been to take away the whole walking bit, which would've left us wondering where on earth they were and how they'd gotten there. Pure walking is easier to make interesting in a book than in a movie, so I understand why PJ chose to put this fight in.

But! It has to be said, before you all slaughter me for defending the changes - I fully and throughougly (sp?) hated how he changed Faramir. That was not okay at all. Faramir is supposed to be the nice son, who isn't drawn to the Ring.
But then again, when you add the bit from Osigilliath where you see Faramir, Boromir and Denethor, it kind of defends the way PJ's let Faramir act, because he wants to show his father that he can do great things too.
But all of that is shattered by the fact that the scene from Osigilliath isn't in the book :P

Okay, I've ranted quite enough now, and I obviously can't seem to decide whether or not I like PJ's changes. I'm thinking the main point is that I understand why he made the changes, but I don't like all of them. :)
If you read all of this, I'll give you a cookie...or five

Some things in the book just wouldn't work in the movie, and they needed to be changed. The important thing is that it works. The books work, and they are, of course, wonderful. And the movies work. They are also wonderful. Some things are different, but it doesn't take away from the main story.

*waves hand* I read all that, Anameleth!

See, I would have greatly preferred it if TTT was a lot more like the book, but I do understand most of the changes. Some, like the Elves, are frustrating and good at the same time--I liked the presence of the Elves, but the fact that it was added and wasn't in the books negates it.

And there's Faramir. Nothing compensates for that. Faramir was ruined for the movies. The more I watch the movies, the more their deviations bother me. And it increases exponentially. :annoyed2:
