Who was Aragorn's heir before he had children?

Was he always planning on making his children the heirs or did he have someone else in mind?

I don't believe he had an heir until he had children. At least, as far as I know, there was never anybody written about by Tolkien. though, no doubt the was one amongst the Dunedain who would have become their cheiftain had Aragorn died. Tolkien never mentions anyone though.

I definitely agree with Darrell. The Heir would've come from whoever was the next-highest in rank among the Dunédain.

Did his son prove a good heir?

I'm pretty sure we don't know who the next-highest ranking Dunédain was....I believe the only other one Tolkien mentions is Halbarad, and he died at the Pelennor Fields.

Eldarion most likely was a good ruler after Aragorn's death, but we don't know for sure, because so far as I know, Tolkien didn't actually write anything out about his rule.

Oh...ok.

That's a shame. I Assume he grew to be such an independent strong warrior with a pure heart just as Aragorn was. I believe he inherited his father's traits and they became idiosyncrassy's of his character. At least that is what i would like to believe.

Truthfully, I'd think that Farimir would take over. When the King's line ended before the Stewards took over until the next King would make himself known.

There would have been no king if Aragorn had not become King... he was the one, sole heir to the throne of Gondor. So, like Silfa said, I believe Denethor would have continued his power hungry rule of the city, perhaps even proclaiming himself king at last...then passing it to one of his sons.... however I don't really believe that would have happened either, as Boromir died protecting the Hobbits, I also believe if Aragorn and the Fellowship failed, Faramir most likely would have been killed as well in the war...and Gondor lost, so their king of sorts would have ended up being Sauron.. -shudders-

Now if Aragorn and Arwen had no sons,... as mentioned by others, I'd guess he would have appointed someone king after him, in that case maybe Faramir or another Dunedain as suggested previously.

By the way: aragorn says to arwen before he dies that his son is a man "full- ripe of kingship" so i also presume that he was a good king

Oh really? I wasn't aware of that! But i must say that in the ROTK EE it mentions something along the lines of Aragorn's son becoming a mighty king, as strong as his father. I must say however it is fascinating to point out the significance of his son. He was the only remaining in Middle-Earth with some form of elf within him, he was the last left of the elven kind in Middle-Earth and i believe that this meant he was a fantastic and strong willed character, carrying Aragorn's traits both physically and mentally.

Eldarion wasn't the only person remaining of the Elven kin. Legolas Greenleaf left after Eldarion became king, and that was the last Elven ship to go into the West. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he was the last of the Elves to go to Valinor. There were still the Nandor and the Avari Elves, too. The Silvan elves are a branch of the Nandor, and so far as I know, there are no Avari ever mentioned. They are the ones who never even left Cuiviénen (where the Elves first 'awoke'). In later years they may have travelled around, but that does not mean that they would go into Valinor.

So really all we can say is that Eldarion was the last person in Middle-earth to bear the blood of the Noldor elves--the last of the pure-blooded Noldor to leave Middle-earth went on the same ship as Galadriel and Elrond.

I can remember PJ also saying that he was the only one left in Middle-Earth bearing the blood of elves. Sorry if i'm wrong but i can back it up with what PJ said. I would have thought that even when the Avari etc. leave, Eldarion would remain on Middle-Earth and when he has a family of his own, he would be able to create a blood-line with the blood of elves...therefore carrying on the magic of the elves despite the fact all pure elves have sailed into the West.

thats actually not right i think because when legolas meets imrahil of dol amroth first he says sth like "here you can truly see the remains of elven blood in the race of men" (roughly). in fact imrahil has blood of nimrodel or amroth in him. you can read that e.g. in the UF.
