For me it was the films. To be honest I am not really a fan of fantasy fiction as a genre and so when Fellowship came out, I took no notice of it at all. It took a Legolas Fangirl insisting that I just had to watch it to see this fabulous guy with long blond hair to make me check it out. I dutifully watched the film and, while not particulary moved by Legolas, was totally hooked.
I then went on to read the books, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well. I wouldn't try to compare them though, as I like both for different reasons.
The film when I want a quick fix, and the book when I have more time and want more detail.

i read the Hobbit when i was young then saw the movies then read the book and i am now reading the book for the second time
i think the books are definately WAAAYYY different than the movies though
sometimes i think its easier to watch something and then read a book especially if its LOTR it migth be difficult for youn ger people to understand if you read the book first at least with the movie you get the basics of the story plot then you can fill in the details of Tolkien when you read the book.
but yeah i am glad i watched the movies first because if i didn't iwouldn't have caught all the details in the books

I read the books in the middle of the movies. I don't have Ringer parents, so I didn't even know LotR existed until my little brother decided to rent FotR the summer after it came out (I know, *le gasp*). By the time TTT came out, I'd read the first two books and actually went to see TTT in theaters (though not right as it came out). By the time RotK hit theaters, I was hooked. Dragged my dad to sit in line to see it on opening day (would've seen it at midnight, but I had Semester Exams that day) and had read all the books. Since then, I've read the trilogy three times and The Hobbit six times.
So...I'm not really sure. The movies technically came first, but it was really and all-at-once experience.

I read the hobbit first and I became so enchanted with it I told my mother I just had te read Lotr. Of course she hunted all over the house looking for it, and gave me it to read. When I was halfway through Fotr, it was arround that time that the movie was coming out. Quite a coincidence eh? So I rushed the book down and of course saw the movie and then I read the other two books and now I'm forever hooked. So for me, the books came first.

The books. Tolkien's portrayal in his own words that built visions of it all in my mind. The movies were entertaining, but they were only Peter Jackson's visions of Tolkiens portrayal of the story.

I watched the movies first (it was like...a few days after I watched Harry Potter 1) and bought the book. Though I didn't read the book until last year.
Recently, I read the Hobbit and I rented The Silmarillion just last Friday.

It was the movies for me too. When FOTR and TTT came out in the theaters, I didn't see them (was busy with college and work) . I rented them both and watched them though so I made up for it. But when ROTK came out, I went to see it twice in the theater
I am now reading FOTR and I have TTT and ROTK books waiting on me! I love both the movies and the books!

'Twas books first for me and my whole family. Partly because we had to read them before seeing the movie, but we weren't allowed to see the movie until we were 13, so I read it a year or so before I saw the movies and totally loved it. So I was kinda disappointed in the movies, but PJ still did a good job.

I saw the first two movies, then I read RotK whilst waiting for the movie to come out. THEN I read the Hobbit, saw RotK, read the Silmarillion and Two Towers n' then the Fellowship.
