Um....The Lord of the Rings is not made by what PJ chose to do or not to do. It's from what Tolkien chose to do. PJ bungled a lot of stuff--I'm just happy he didn't bungle a lot more. I didn't like the way the winding stairs were depicted in the movie--it just didn't seem like something the men of Numenor would've made, which they did.

I always believed that it was a natural stair made by mother nature
Actually I always believed that it was not actually a stair but the it was looking like one.

I think that would be too much of a coincidence--I'd say it was made by the men of Numenor, who built Minas Ithil/Morgul and Cirith Ungol.

That's what I think.
But I say it was an orc with a chisel.

Lol, SwedishMoose.
I just finished The Two Towers on Sunday (and I read The Return of the King yesterday), so I noticed that the stairs are fairly close to the main pass, but they are described as "unevenly spaced." That was something that I hadn't noticed before--it lends more credit to the idea that the stairs were not made by the Numenoreans, but perhaps by others. However, I still don't think PJ got them right for the movie.

I'm thinking they were once used for a shortcut. I know this doesn't make sense, but what if Shelob's lair was, like, an escape tunnel?
