When I saw FOTR for the first time I always mixed up Merry and Pippin. I don't why, perhaps because they look a bit similar to each other. :)
I still have troubles telling you who is who today.

When I first watched TTT I remember finding the Nazgul so frightening that I thought I could see them above when I was lying in my bed after watching the movie.

I thought that Arwen was going to die giving birth to Eldarion after seeing the Arwen's Vision scene in ROTK...don't have the faintest idea where I got this idea (and I read the books before seeing the movies - but then again I didn't read the Appendices, maybe that's an explanation).

i'd already read the books, so i didn't make any of those sort of mistakes. i did however think that billy boyd was irish (i'm sure he would kill me for that) and that orlando bloom was american (i thought he sounded too english to actually be english). woops!

I remember the only way I could tell Merry and Pippin apart was Merry was the one in yellow and Pippin was the one in green :duh: .

I remember at the end of FOTR I thought Boromer was Aragon's brother!!! I have no idea why I thought of that.

yeah I wasn't sure about Boromir and Aragorn either, because when Boromir dies he says "my brother my captain my king" and so I was like "I always thought they weren't brothers. What's he saying" :duh:

Yeah, I had no idea where Billy was from, and Orlando's accent sounds *really* weird to me...

Me too! The first time I watched it I kept thinking "Merry's got the yellow vest. Merry's got the yellow vest..." When they're in Moria, and everythings basically monochromatic, or when there are just head shots, I was like "WHO's WHO????" I feel ignorant...

I thought that the Watcher in the Water was the Balrog for a few seconds until my friend explained it to me...it'd been a while since I'd read the books and I couldn't remember the description of the Balrog very well, heh.

I don't have anything like all those, exactly, since I read the books first. However, the first time, my dad read them out loud to me, so for a while I thought Merry was a girl (Mary). I was pretty disappointed when I found out he was actually a guy. (But I wouldn't be now!)

I used to get Merry and Pippin mixed up, but I can tell them apart easily today.
And when I read the books, I thought that Saruman and Sauron were just different names for one character! Silly me!

Stupid. I’d have to say that when I saw FoTR in early January 2002, I expected it to be closer to the book. The first thing that jarred me was the fact that the 17 years between the “Long-Expected Party” (when Bilbo turned 111 and Frodo 33) and Frodo’s leaving the Shire – so that Frodo was approximately as old as Bilbo when Bilbo left Bag End for his adventure in the Hobbit – disappeared. After having watched FoTR the movie the first time, I realized that I had compiled a huge list of where PJ had gotten it wrong (from the perspective of the book). My wife and I went to the same cinema at most three days later to watch the movie again, in my case simply to watch, and ignore the serious deficiencies versus canon. The deficiencies got worse in the next two movies, but I’m guessing that that year respectively two years later premiere of the second and third LoTR movies (and never mind the EE DVDs which added much more to the LoTR movies than did the equivalents of the TH Movies) had dulled my expectations of things to come – except for Frodo sending Sam back in the approach to Cirith Ungol, and the depiction of Faramir. Those errors remain inexcusable for me.

Yeah, I had that issue too except when one said the other's name. Even so, it took a bit to remember who was who though.

The first stupid thing I thought when I first watched the movie was when Arwen appears out of nowhere and catches a Dunedain Ranger at unawares. My expectations from the Peter JAckson fanfics went down from there.

Well, I’d guess that my reaction to that scene was “whatever happened to Glorfindel???”. (In the Bakshi enhanced cartoon, Legolas takes Glorfindel’s place …) But, leaving aside the issues of not being canon and the silly Elf-Dwarf romance involved, the character of Tauriel is not necessarily totally against canon. In later writing, JRRT stated that Elven women were quite able to hold their own in feats of (athletic and other) prowess – before they gave birth for the first time. Of course the most extreme effect on an Elven mother giving birth was that of Fëanor on his mother Míriel. Now I must confess that I’ve forgotten what garb Arwen wore in that scene – not anything like what Tauriel did, is my only guess. A totally different matter is, as I’d again guess, how believable Liv Tyler (or for that matter Evangeline Lilly) was in that aspect of her role. In both cases, it was the first time that I saw these actresses in any role, so I have no idea how their previous roles might have prejudiced some viewers into thinking that either of them was just totally miscast, or milder judgements in that direction. Aragorn is stated (somewhere) to have become the hardiest of men (in his age – how would he match up against Beren, Turin or Tuor?). No match whatsoever compared to his dozens-of-generations great-uncle Elrond, or the reincarnated Glorfindel, or Thranduil or even, for that matter, Legolas. It’s simply impossible to depict on a screen how much above men Elves were in practically all skills.

My confusion was between Boromir and Aragorn. Even when Boromir died, I still thought it was Aragorn that died :-D
