Lol, LDM--"Elves are annoying"  *dies laughing*

Since I just died, I technically shouldn't be able to write this post, but you guys know how it is--the pull of the RPGs is felt even in the grave. ;)

---------

The demon escaped. The demon escaped. The thought reverberated in Damien's head, and he thought even his eyes must being going red from his rage. How could that creature escape? Teleporting was supposed to require portals--nobody had ever teleported only themselves before. More importantly, how had it escaped him? How could he even let it escape?

He should have killed it without speaking. He should have done it the way he normally did--a strike from the shadows, with no warning. He had shifted his pattern, and the escape of the demon was the consequence. The next time they met, the creature would not be so lucky.

Hearing a crashing in the trees, Damien loosened his white-knuckled grip on the demon's dagger. Judging by the noise that was being caused, the approacher was Mrug--no one else could cause that much noise with that little effort.

"The demon escaped," Damien snarled, the statement coming out to rival an animal growl thanks to his rasp. He knew his eyes looked wide and probably unnerving right then, so he made a conscious effort to shift back to his normal state of irritated calmness. It didn't come easily, but it came.

Turning to face the dwarf, he remembered that the knife in his hands was the one that stole souls. With a furtive glance at the dwarf, Damien abandoned the thought as soon as it came--even if the short creature was loud and noisy, he seemed to want to help, which was better than what most of his own companions acted.

Mrug decided with a grimace that if looks could kill, he'd be dead then and there. Damien's glare could have curdled milk. Bemused, he scratched his reddish beard - had the battle gone that badly? And then the elf mentioned a word he'd never thought he'd hear in this life.

"Demon?" he yelped, his voice uncharacteristically high-pitched. Viscerally he glanced about as though the creature would jump out from the trees. Telling himself not to be daft, his bushy eyebrows came back down, and he regarded his new companion with a shrewd look. "I came as a messenger from my clan near The Grainayar," he elucidated gruffly. "A plague has afflicted our mountain halls. I be thinkin' that you laddies - and lasses - would have the powers to drive it off... but now I'm thinkin' different."

Soon after creating the shroud of mist, Erillyn realized how foolish of an idea it was. True the demon could not see them, but they couldn't see the demon! She knew she had a lot to learn about her powers and when and how to use them. She just hoped the got out of this alive so that she could learn.

Disoriented in the mist that she created, Erillyn heard voices one was of the demon and the other was of Damien. "Oh great!" she thought "Now I'll never hear the end of this mistake." She began trying to rid them of the mist, but she had difficulties at first. Things would be so much easier when she finally understood all this magic.

Finally, the mist disappated. She readied herself to fight the demon, but she was surprised to only see Damien standing not to far away from them. She braced herself for the lecture she knew would come, but then a crashing sound was heard. Erillyn immediately braced herself for another fight, but was taken by surprise and confusion when rather than a demon or some other creature of evil, a dwarf came crashing towards them. She was still prepared to fight, but she stayed her hand. After all, the last time she had tried to fight that had not turned out well.

She was glad she didn't, for then the dwarf said that he came from near the Grainayar. Her face turned crimson all the way up to her ears when he spoke of not thinking that they could be of any help to them. She felt the sting of her foolishness acutely.

"I'm Erillyn," she said to the dwarf by way of introduction. He seemed to already know Damien. He must have come when she and Seryl were away. "One of Damien's companions." Then she turned towards Damien. The next words she said were forced out through slightly gritted teeth. She was not totally willing to say them. "Thank you."

What do I want? The bitter thought slipped out before Radearle could rein it in. A life where all of my choices have not been made for me, well in advance.

Shores of An! How had that jumped in? Sharply controlling herself, the woman shifted back into the confident, almost smarmy, purr. What do any of us want? Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness. Aye, and a complete absence of things that go bump in the night - like you. She filed away the memory of the demon's treatment of the shadowy figure - fireballs were interesting - and vaguely realized that her physical body was sweating, both with nerves and with the attempt to overcome his mental barriers. Maybe she was getting more than she had bargained for... Shores! What if her voice still retained her regional accent? She'd never been able to tell herself, but she'd been told that An's inhabitants had a peculiar lilt in their voices, and it would be particularly strong in hers.

Pushing her worries aside, she bent her concentration to searching his shields, looking for any crack to squeeze through. They were few and far between. She found one and began to force her way inside.

Damien gave the dwarf a baleful glance. A plague was affecting their mountain halls? A demon had escaped justice just now, and the dwarf wanted to know if they could stop a plague? Plagues and dying dwarves were not Damien's concern. If they all died, the only difference it would make to him was that there would be another area for creatures of darkness to overrun.

Of course, the dwarf made it sound as though they would not be capable of it. Maybe Damien's companions weren't, but he certainly could attempt it. His healing would probably stop it. Of course, that would mean delaying their quest, and he was not certain he was ready to do that.

"You will have to find someone besides me," he said, managing to keep his irritation from making it come out as another growl.

He glared at Erillyn as he stalked back towards camp. He didn't do it in the normal sense of the word--he stalked literally, hunting. He felt like killing something right now. Something that fought back. Something that vaguely resembled a short dwarf with a large axe.

At Damien's dismissive tone, Mrug was either one of two things - too frustrated to be outraged or too outraged to know the difference. He spared a curt nod at the female elf who'd just arrived, then turned his full wrath back on Damien. Stumpy legs pumping, he jogged to catch up. "I - ye - bah, elf! I didn't climb those cursed mountains and choke through those cursed trees and deal with those cursed humans for nothing! You're - I'm - I'm coming with you whether you like it or not!"

He planted himself firmly in Damien's path, then swelled to twice his size when the elf simply stalked right past him. "Speaking of which," he huffed, working to catch up with the taller warrior's long strides. "Don't you think it's time we be going? I left my ride half a mile back - " And here he broke off, crashing back through the underbrush and retracing his steps to retrieve said ride.

He returned to the campfire a moment later leading a sturdy gray pony. "I'm ready," he proclaimed, glaring at the assembled Chosen as if daring them to complain.

Damien spared a glance for the dwarf--a glance full of wonder. How under the stars could Mrug crash through the undergrowth like that and not be set upon by all of the creatures of the forest? Stealth was normally imperative in these woods, yet the dwarf seemed to possess even a notion of what it might be, and still he seemed to have no trouble. It was incredible.

However, that only distracted him for a few moments from his slowly ebbing fury. There were still predators in the forest, and he intended to take out his wrath on one of them. All it required was a little bit of stealth. And the absence of Mrug.

Thankfully, the dwarf didn't seem to be coming back--he was probably going to try and convince Damien's companions to rescue his people. If that's what he wanted, the elf wasn't going to stop him. However, he most likely wasn't going to help him either.

(GL, try reading the previous posts. Sry for absence, busy busy. Btw Radearle is human - yeah pretty much the only full-blood human)

Slowly, slowly, she was extending her probe through the weak spot in his barriers - just keep him talking and focused on her words. An interesting proposition, surely. Radearle paused, as if considering. What's in it for me? She reached some more, convinced that she was almost through. Shores, the demon had strong shields!

There were people talking, possibly, around her, and it was affecting her concentration. Focus, focus ... An! she hadn't meant to project that!

When Damien broke into the clearing, Mrug, who'd been vigilantly watching the woods for just that arrival, nearly jumped out of his skin. Curses, that elf was quiet! Embarassed but determined not to show it, he sat up straighter in his pony's saddle and glared. He'd already doused the last dying embers of the campfire and covered their presence here to the best of his ability. Though the elf may not think so, his ranger abilities were adequate for one of his race.

"Well?" he demanded, then glanced around. "Where's the redhead?"

Damien wiped his spear off on a rag, taking care not to touch the blood. It was already destroying the rag, but at least now it would not etch the spearhead. That hunt had been satisfying--there were multiple shadows in the forest that had had his rage taken out on them. They would not be moving again.

The dwarf had started when Damien entered the clearing and walked over to Blight, but that was hardly surprising. One of his race would have difficulty hearing a bear going through the forest. Of course, some humans had problems with that, too.

"She's back that way," Damien replied to Mrug's question, pointing behind the dwarf. In truth, she was not that far out of their sight--just behind some trees, but Mrug could hardly be expected to have realized that.

"We can get her and then leave," Damien said, leading Blight across the clearing, towards the red-head, along with her horse. They certainly didn't want to delay here.

Why is it important that we meet in person? Radearle inserted a note of interest into her voice, determined to keep him talking. She needed to play this for all it was worth.

She was finally getting somewhere, picking up tiny hints as to identity and situation. No locations, but impressions of others, status, and hierachy were beginning to filter through ... and then fire. It exploded into her consciousness, a furnace a thousand times hotter than the finest seacoal forge in An. And pain to match, lancing though every portion of her being.

The woman's body spasmed, every muscle contracting violently under the attack. She couldn't think, couldn't breathe, couldn't see.

After what seemed eternity, the impression abated slightly as he broke concentration to say something, which she couldn't focus enough to hear. Radearle jerked herself out of the connection, going into an uncontrolled bout of shaking as she gasped for breath. Shores, she had gotten more than she bargained for.
