Ok, in the FotR the Hobbits were on the Barrow Downs and a Barrow-wright came and Sam, Pippin and Merry kinda blacked out. What are Barrow-wrights exactly?

I too have a rather large gap in my knowledge for what Barrow-Wights are but i would agree with the fact that they are either wraiths or ghouls of some sort. They obviously inhabit the Barrow Downs, and i'm guessing that perhaps some sort of curse was put upon them which means that they are nothing more than shadows of beings. It's quite a good question that :)

I'm not really quite sure about them.

"Trembling he looked up, in time to see a tall dark figure like a shadow over the stars. It leaned over him. He thought there wre two eyes, very cold though lit with a pale light that seemed to come from some remote distance. Then a grip stronger and colder than iron seized him. The icy touch froze his bones, and he remebered no more." (Tolkien, FOTR, 151).

By the chant they give and the way Sam, Merry, and Pippin are all clan in white with treasures with swords across their throats, the wrights seem to want to kill them. But the song makes it seem like they're just going to let them lie in cold stone forever... The barrow wright song is

"Cold be hand and heart and bone,
and cold be sleep under stone:
never more to wake on stony bed,
never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead.
In the black wind the stars shall die,
and still on gold here let them like,
till the dark lord lifts his hand
over dead sea and withered land."

I read all that and I'm not quite sure why they want to capture people and do this to them, but...

Why wasn't Frodo with them?

Frodo had been taken separate from them, which is probably why he wasn't lying right next to them.

:D new topic that I haven't posted in. Perfect. :)

As I recall, the Barrow Wights were something along the lines of Wraiths or ghosts, as has been mentioned. I seem to remember something, possibly from the Appendices in RotK, mentioning that the Witch-king sent 'evil spirits' to inhabit the great burial mounds of Arnor's kings, or something along those lines.

The Barrow Wights came when the Witch King invaded the North. They could be his evil henchmen.

They are his evil henchmen/cronies. He is the one who sent them to the Barrow Downs.

I think the Barrow-wights were some sort of evil spirits sent to the Barrow-downs by the Witch king of Angmar, during some ancient war, and they just lingered there for a hell of a long time, I am no sure which war/conflict though.

Frodo wasn't with them because he'd ridden on ahead and got captured separately. But I wonder why he wasn't in the same state as his friends... Does it have to do with the ring? ...

Possibly, he also has an inner strength, which sets him apart from the other hobbits, even in this early stage of the journey.

Right. It says when Hobbits get scared, they develop an inner courage.

No--they don't develop an inner courage--it's already present. When they get scared, it is merely awakened, not developed.
