Hmmm you know how LotR is based on WWII? Did the breaching of the wall remind anyone slightly of the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Obviously not as destructive, since the Medieval folk did not know of nuclear weapons... but that was a bit similar.
Or am I just trying to find connections?

didn't the arrow stay in his neck though. i mean yeah he acually peirced him....but basically the orc refused to die, no matter how much he was shot......kind of like boramir...and he was acually shot in the chest 3 times.

I'm always in two minds when someone brings up how TLotR is connected to the World Wars. I always remember how Tolkien says TLotR is not an allegory and he hates allegory, but I can't help connecting different parts of the book with WWI or II.
It didn't actually remind me of the atomic bombs. The TLotR explosion was tiny compared to the impact of the ones in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Yeah but in their time, that explosion would have been considered a huge one, would it not?

Yes, it is, and that is a very good thought Haldir. I am going to wait until we learn about WW2 in History before I think too deeply into it though.

Tolkien, as someone said despised allegory, and said so in the foreword. BUt i think that he used the bomb to represnt the advancement of technology, and how it can be used for bad purposes than good. Thats whati think it sorta signifies, but whatever moves u, then u can think that.

Well, we don't even know that it was a bomb in the books--all that was said was that they brought blasting fire from Orthanc. We can only assume (probably correctly) that it was some form of gunpowder, but perhaps not.

I thought it was brilliant with the orc running with the flame, it just made the movie more suspensful!

I spose it could have been anything. Maybe a flamethrower or somethgin. But the title Blasting Fire makes it seem like a bomb type weapon and not just a fire weapon. The blasting makes it seem like that for me anyways.

I doubt the orcs would have made a blasting fire from wood.. the only real logical conclusion is gunpowder.

It would, but it didn't wipe out tens of thousands of civilians upon detonation and thousands more afterwards due to radiation...

I don't think I would compare the explosion at Helms Deep to WWII, rather to the attacks on 11 September in the US. Even the LotR cast mentions that that is what they are reminded of when they watch that scene.
