Well, war originates from mankinds desire for prestige. The whole deal comes with human nature, really.

Right.
It's a fallen world.
It's every man for himself, basically. And when a man gets followers... so comes war.

I would imagine war comes when people don't have what they want, and find no other way to get it.

War is hardly ever a 'get what I want'. It's part of the attempt to gain victories, seize territory, gain prestige, and grab more resources. That is the basic criteria for anyone who begins a war.

That sounds a whole lot like "get what I want"

Herm...sorry, let me elaborate. I mean that the only thing, at the base of it all, is the desire for prestige, or recognition of superiority. That is the underlying cause of war, all other things desired when war is declared are rooted in that idea.

I really hate to sound like this, but that could also be interpreted in "getting what I want."

War springs from many different sources like ethnic differences(look at Israels situation), religion (well thats just an excuse for war, the crusades), the ambitions of an individual (Hitler who wanted to create a German empire and of course his followers who believed in the Nazi protocol.), resources.
Of course war is also a powerful tool in politics etc....

AHHHH WE'VE BEEN INVADED BY THE HIST CLUB HEEEEEELP
I think in some ways modern wars are much worse. Modern war is just a guy pushing a button and killing millions of innocents.

*maniacal laughter*
Modern war...
*stops*
What the hell are you talking about? No one in the modern world is stupid enough to use an atomic bomb, they are just a way to threaten people. Like North Korea, it was able to get funds frozen on a foreign bank account due to an agreement to stop it`s nuclear program. (but yeah the basic idea is that how easy it`s to kill someone the days in war)
Modern war seems to be about effective air strikes, speed and firepower of the troops etc, but this has been time and again countered with guerrilla warfare and bomb attacks.

But it can be just pushing a button and killing someone.
If you have a gun, if you're dropping any sort of bomb, atomic or not, it basically takes just a button- whether the trigger or a button on an airplane.
And I'd say that other than sin, the reason we have war in the first place is because man tried to become great and language was confused and we were scattered across the earth, and even in their scattered position, man still tries to become great.

Well, smeag, you are quite write, but the selection 'of what I want' is usually one thing. It alway is getting prestige (i.e. greatness) for your country, yourself, your ethnicity, your religion, or your ruler. This is done by getting what I want, but taking territory, destroying an enemy, or etc., is often celebrated because your nation has gained standing, not because it got new blablabla.
