I typically only do the internet talk: ttyl, I believe. In all, I definetly perfer correct grammar.
My Philosophy:
Speak in correct grammar so that you can write in correct grammar. Write in correct grammar so that you can edit.

^One of my teachers did something similar to that to kids when they asked 'Can I go to the bathroom.' instead of 'May I go the bathroom please.'
It always cracked me up.

My sixth grade teacher did the same thing all of the time. I learned rather quickly, but some other people didn't. So, I just laughed at them, and I find myself saying it all of the time, also. I don't understand what is so hard about it. If you are unsure, replace the word with "am I able to". Then, if it sounds ridiculous, it's may.

my teacher did that once... but only once that i knew of... not many ppl i know do that. it just tends to annoy and frustrate ppl.
