"What?" was the first word uttered out of William's mouth in disbelief. But within the next to few moments, he smirked, "All right. All right. Nice joke, Jack." Laughing, he shook his head, walked up to Jack and patted him on the shoulder, "But, let's be serious now and focus on Elizabeth's rescue."

Jack turned his back on William, but felt his eyebrows curve downwards. "No jest William,. . .when I say submerge I mean submerge!"
Jack pointed a finger down towards the deck and bobbed it up and down a good number of times.

William's smile slowly disappeard behind his lips that closed in seriousness. Focusing his eyes on Jack's bobbing finger, he came to the realization that Jack was not joking. "You're serious?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. It was almost as if Will did not want to believe this insane idea. "What do you expect me to do? Must I remind you that I am not immortal as yourself?"

Jack stopped and through a gritted smile, he turned around to face William's face. "Well,. . ." Jack said, thoughtfully, "There's always th' option o' temporarily bein' able to aquaint such ability to dive on under with me ship."

"You mean....you want me to become immortal like the rest of you, for a period of time?" Will replied with an unhappy face. This was certainly something he was not expecting, but it may be a faster way of traveling to Port Royal.
Sighing, and regreting in his mind that he was saying this, he said, "All right, Jack. I'll do it for the sake of Elizabeth."

Bootstrap strode quickly through the hold of the ship, pausing suddenly to stick his head into one of the smaller cabins where several crewmen were still lazing about. "On deck, you lot," he repeated firmly, eliciting a groan from one or two of them and hurried compliance from the rest. "Cap'n said it'd be a short stop; you shouldn't've been expectin' a long break. Up with ye....Some time today'd be nice, gents." As soon as he was sufficiently assured that the crewmen weren't going right back to their game of cards the moment he left, Bootstrap moved on, quickly reaching the stairs that led to the deck. Truth be told, he'd been hoping for a slightly longer stop as well, though not for quite the same reasons.
It had been months since Bootstrap had last seen his son- indeed, they hadn't had the opportunity to speak since shortly after the lad's wedding, just before they'd each gone their own ways, Will on the Pearl and Bootstrap on the Dutchman. He'd been overjoyed to learn that Jack intended to once again visit the new captain of the Black Pearl, but Jack had informed him that it would be a short visit consisting of business only, and that he needed someone to mind the ship in his absence. Even still, Bootstrap was hoping he might at least catch some glimpse of-
"William!" he cried out in surprise, emerging on deck to see none other than his son standing opposite Jack Sparrow. His smile quickly faded, however, as he took in both men's expressions. "Jack?" he inquired of the captain bemusedly. "Thought this was t' be a short visit."

"Visit extended." Jack jabbed at Bootstrap Bill Turner's elder face. "Now, trot yerself off and see to it that th' ship will be submerged when I give th' final command. Shoo!"
Not caring to see if Bootstrap really did follow the order, Captain Jack cracked open his lips and blurted towards the whelp, "Then, dear William Turner. . .answer me one question, do ye fear death?"
Jack's eyebrows lifted and a toothy grin settled on his face.

William's attention was directed toward the shout blurp from Bootstrap, but he did not respond with a smile. He simply nodded and said softly, "Hello, father."
Lowering his eyes toward the deck, his thoughts swarmed deep within his mind....Elizabeth....the baby....Beckett....becoming part of the crew......submerging....death... Looking to Jack with his face solid as stone, he answered, "Yes."

pirateoftherings wrote: "Your words, not mine," Beckett replied disinterestedly. "Mary," he called out again, spotting the maid as she hurried past the doorway.
The maid froze in her steps and slowly turned around, clearly petrified at the thought of being the direct object of her Lord's attention three times in one day, but to her credit, she quickly recovered. "Milord?"
"The bath will be needed, after all. See to it that it is prepared by the time supper is finished."
"Of course, milord."
Elizabeth returned to her food, making no pretense at possessing less than set expression and a fervent wish that Beckett was close enough across the table to be successfully stabbed with the knife she was so vigorously using to mutilate her meat. Conversation had not proved a successful avenue to expel her frustration - in fact, it had likely exacerbated it. Unfortunately the meat in front of her was rapidly diminishing in its use as another outlet, due to the fact that despite her frustration Elizabeth was hungry.
But this ordeal would have been for nothing if she could glean no information from Beckett. Steeling herself, Elizabeth glanced up briefly enough to ensure he was still there, picking away at his food with that infuriating calmness. "May I inquire as to how long you intend to wait for Mr. Turner to comply with your request before your patience comes to an end?"

"Firstly, it was hardly a request," Beckett replied placidly. "Secondly, I am well aware that matters such as this often take an indefinite amount of time to resolve. I am prepared to wait for as long as I must, and not a moment longer."

"Jack, what's goin' on?" Bootstrap persisted, remaining stubbornly where he was. "Why's Will aboard th' Dutchman at all? An' why's the Pearl sailin' away- under the command of Barbossa, no less?"

Jack's face screwed. Why was it that Bootstrap had the knack to care so much for the whelp? Jack would never understand this, until the day he had children, when and if that would ever happen. He doubted it.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Jack slapped William hard on the back and said, "I believe ye ought to explain this one Will."
Jack left the stage set and wide open for young Mister Turner.

Shooting a sharp glance to Jack before he left the scene, Will turned to his father and met his eyes directly. "Elizabeth has been taken captive by Lord Beckett. Beckett wants to met with me. He wants me to side with the East India Trading Company.... Jack and I are in route to Port Royal in a rescue attempt."
Looking in the direction the Pearl had disappered into, he responded, "That is why the Pearl is in the hands of Barbossa at the moment. I placed him in charge."
Scratching his head, his eyes shifted for a moment, as a hint of fear swept over him, "Father...I know this may sound foolish and unwise, but.... Elizabeth is with child."

Not a moment longer. Which meant that if Will did not come in the space of time that Beckett was prepared to wait - no! Will couldn't come. He wouldn't come.
Elizabeth wished she could have fooled herself more effectively. Or that she was even prepared to hang so that Will was safe. Thoughts of the baby were utmost and she swallowed a gulp of anxiety in spite of herself.
The meat was gone and Elizabeth had no wish to spend a moment longer than she must in Beckett's presence. "I am sure you wish to do your waiting in peace," she threw haughtily at him, rising. "And as you no doubt find my company as trying as I find yours, I intend to retire."

Bootstrap's jaw dropped briefly before snapping shut again, his expression seeming unable to settle on disbelief, ecstacy, or anger. "That's...that's wonderful! That is- the child part. Not the captured part, o' course," he fumbled for the right words. "That's to say....God's wounds, Will! How far along?" His mind reeled from this new revelation, unable to immediately grasp the full immensity of it. A child! His son's child! His grandchild! To think, that not even a year ago he'd despaired of ever laying eyes on the boy again on this side of death! This was...far more than he'd ever anticipated being granted when he'd pleaded with whatever powers were out there for a chance to see his son just once more.

Beckett did not bother to rise as well. "On the contrary, I find our talks to be rather stimulating," he deadpanned. "However, you are free to retire as you wish. I will see you in the morning, then, Mrs. Turner?"

"I must confess I had found the exact opposite." Elizabeth managed to keep the words above a snarl. "Enjoy your wait, milord Beckett. Neptune grant it will be all for naught." If at all possible she would not see him in the morning.
And with that decidedly seaworthy parting response she swept up the stairs. Elizabeth maintained her regal bearing until the door shut behind her and she sank down against it, fighting off (to her horror) panicked tears. Perhaps all the midwife talk of mood changing when one was expecting was not all balderdash.

William watched in joy as his father's eyes read clearly.....he was exhuberant, "Yes, a child, father. We were just as surprised."
His smile was gentle and peaceful, until he metioned how far long, "Six months now. I fear that it is a danger for Elizabeth and the baby....the situation they are in is dangerous and...Elizabeth may stress in excess and force herself into pre-mature labor." His eyes shifted nervously for a brief seconds, but then returned to Bootstrap, "That is why I must sail for Port Royal with all haste."
