ok. This is Teh mephiston.
Wales, well is just Wales. Many englishers thinks its a bit dubious , but nevermind that.Northern Ireland is also very dubious so I wont go into that either.
As for Scotland, well there is talk of them trying to get out of Great Britain ( Dont ask me why, Im as confused as the rest of you guys and gals)
But as far as the act of Union is concerned (1707),
scotland is part of teh UK.
As for the burnination, I was setting fire to paper in a science room when bored.I did mean burned as in told or, made a scapegoat for, or otherwise blamed
but whatever floats your boat.
Mephiston.

Aye, that I am. I also like setting fire to paper hats from crackers.....having candles on the table and paper hats at Christmas dinner.... = muahuahuaaa.....Ooh, and marshmellows! At Halloween I have to have marshmellows and a candle.....I love it when their guts ooze out.
Yes, that's why. I remember the actual event, but the train stations and the journey is just a blur. I remember it was very busy and the station was very big but that's about it.
Naw... there are a few places I wouldn't visit on principle I'm afraid. I'm probably getting political so I'll shut up while I can.
Ooh.... Wales... obviously. Erm, the Lake District is also very nice, haven't been there for a while. Derbyshire is lovely, especially Bakewell, Buxton and Castleton. Edinburgh is great as well, and I love Gretna Green. And pretty much anywhere in Cheshire.
Definitely. Wales and Scotland are part of the United Kingdom. Whichever part of Ireland wants to be part of Britain (I always get the two mixed up!), they are also part of the UK. I actually usually think of Ireland as a whole as part of Britain, which I probably shouldn't do, but it's hard to sometimes think - "oh, only less than half of that little bit of land is us".

@ Eä: Not a problem. And yes, you must come to London. I will join JF in her pyromania if you do not!
Hmm.. I have no opinion on the Ireland/Wales/Scotland issue. They're all good places with good people and they don't bother me one bit. They can do whatever they like in my opinion as long as they're not hurting people
@ Estë: Aww no hailing teh Lar I say!

Hmm, I don't know about favourite places in England, I really haven't been to that many. I've been to Beer and Lyme Regis, which according to my Dad are near/on the border between Devon and Dorset. I've been to London a couple of times, but I'm too much of a country girl to enjoy it reaaally. Tis all to loud and tree-less. And too many darn shops! Hmm, then I've been to Leeds, where everything seemed reaaally tall. And I found that rather scary. I've also been to the lovely York, and seen the Minster which was beautiful. York is a bummer to get lost in though, all the streets look the same. I think that's it, I can't think of anywhere else I've been. Been on holiday that is. I've been the B'ham, Manchester, Cheshire to somewhere called Cheadle which always makes me laugh for some reason. Oh and I've been to Wales a couple of times too, to Llangollen and somewhere else when we went to teh theatr.
Anyways...

@ Lar: Ooo, I think we should.

Well thanks to being car-less for a good...ooh... 14 years of my life, I have seen a lot of the country via coach trips and train jouneys. And I can say hand on heart, I love my country for the scenery, the people and the places. All have the downsides, as any country must have, but there is not a place on this earth I would want to live other than Britain - no, not even New Zealand. I'm a homey sort of person, and Britain is my home.
And I think I have the best of both worlds. Living in a town with Liverpool 20 minutes away, but living three minutes from the heart of the Cheshire countryside is great, as I am equally at home in busy city centres oand in the peace and tranquility of small, little villages that have yet to be spoilt and commercialized with the McDonald's, WHSmith's and Woolworths of this world. Sometimes it's just great to go to these places and admire how quiet and how natural it looks and feels. You have no idea how much I love going to these places and seeing family owned bakeries instead of Greggs. A butchers and greengrocer instead of a Co-op or a supermarket.
That's probably one of the reasons I love Wales so much, as you can get these little streets, packed with shops, but they have their individuality because the shops are unique to that place.
Too many places these days are losing their individuality, as chain stores are being added to their streets, and family owned buisinesses are closing down.

When it comes to the most beautiful places in England, the Lake District wins hands down/all ends up/without a doubt/... you get the picture. The scenery is fantastic, the towns are wonderful, and most of the food is great. I would show some piccies, but we didn't have a digital camera the last time we went.
Derbyshire is also very pretty, but not quite as spectacular. Yorkshire is also very nice. But for me, when it comes to the best place for countryside, and Englishness, the heart of Surrey is the place to go! (like where I was on Sunday) Open fields, small villages, and village greens (or other spaces) with cricket pitches on, with woods all around, and gentle rolling hills in the distance... *Wanders off into a sunny, Surrey-like vista*
Anyway...
oh, for distinctions about Uk and britain and stuff, here goes. (And I hope I get this right, or I'll let geographers everywhere down)
British Isles ~ All the islands here about, including the countries England, Ireland, Scotlad, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
United Kingdom ~ The countries England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain ~ The main landmass, comprising of England, Scotland, and Wales.
Eire ~ The landmass with Ireland and Northern Ireland on it.
Hopefully that broke it all down for you

*pats Estë and Mephiston on teh head*
Ah, good ol' England. I'm a homey sort of person myself and so I'd never think of leaving this place. Of course I want to see the rest of the world, but Britain is my first love and I won't ever leave it for long.
I've never traveled very far, but York is by far my favourite place. The Minster is spectacular as Estë said, and the streets are full of all sorts of shops. It's not quite as crowded as London [which is another favourite of mine!] and has an ethereal, old-world quality of its own.
And I must agree with Darrell that the Lake District is amazing! I have only seen bits of it driving through but what I've heard of it is.. wow, only England can have something like that.
Dorset is lovely as well; especially the beaches. The sand isn't so great really anywhere, but Bournemouth and surrounding areas have really interesting natural geography. And despite the fact they're a big tourist destination, I still like it.
And.. because I live outside of Bristol, in Somerset, I've also ventured in Gloucestershire occassionally. Not my most favourite place though..

I totally agree, it' very sad to see. And even in towns where everything is very quaint, they're still getting planning permission to built multi-story car parks.

I agree. Food tends to be better when its from a smaller family shop. It just feels so much more, natural to me.And crafts that have been done for a generation are now being lost to big, supermarket chains. Tis sad indeed.
Who is going to go to this Hobbit ball that is going to be happening?

My grandmother lives in the Cotswolds which is basically "typically English" with quaint little houses and gardens around them and hollyhocks and foxgloves and you name it. It's really lovely and when you are driving through the villages (even the "touristy" places like Boughton on the water) it's still natural and original. Obviously in the bigger towns you have supermarkets and stuff, but that can't be helped
As for my favourite place in Britain: Well, definitely Wales. It feels like home
Sadly I haven't travelled that far through Britain. Can someone give me some things I ought to go and see?

wow, i've missed so much. i didn't realise the british society had been so active recently.
as for places in britain i've been, i've been camping in wales, devon, the new forest, somerset and shropsire; i spend quite a lot of time in birmingham; i've visited york and london on numerous occasions; i used to go to worcester every week for orchestra; i've gone walking in the malverns a few times; i've visited stratford on numerous occasions (twice to go to the royal shakespeare theatre, and once to visit shakespeare's mother's house, and other times just to sit by the river); i've been to the peak district and the yorkshire dales; i go to peterborough fairly regularly cuz my grandad lives there; i've been on day trips to blackpool and weston-super-mare; i spent four days in aberystwyth with college; and i'm told i've been to cornwall and the isle of wight, but i was too young to remember.
yorkshire's by far my favourite place to be - it's so so beautiful, and parts of it are so rugged and wild that it's quite thrilling. however, i'm a worcestershire lass by birth, so the rolling hills will always have a special place in my heart.

i'd never have said leeds was scary, just plain weird. i kind of live there now because i'm studying at the university, and it is possibly the strangest place i've ever been. behind my halls of residence was a scrapyard, complete with horses, ducks, geese, cats, dogs and a proper gypsy caravan; i've seen a man drive a horse and cart down a main road, and a horse chase two boys up a hill; and there's a house i pass on my walk to uni that has a goat in the garden. and all of this in the middle of the city. bizarre!

I've been keeping all you Northerners in my thoughts and prayers these few days with all this rain. 'Tis not good..
