Oh this might interest you lot.
Christopher Lee and Sir Ian McKellen are going to be in this movie together. Christopher Lee is playing Lord Boreal and Sir Ian McKellen is voicing Iorek Byrnison. That should be very very interesting!

Yeah, I heard about that. I can't remember if Boreal was actually seen in the book, or just mentioned. Odd though, as he was one of Mrs. Coulter's lovers that Lord Astriel knew about, he seems a bit old for her I think.

Well, the thing is she probably doesn't care. She was using him for political motives anyways. A couple of women did that back in history.

so His Dark Materials is the series that the Golden Compass is in? You guys are excited to see it? You do know what it is, don't you? It's the "Anti-Narnia"... if you're a Christian I would advise not to watch it.. or read it. I mean no offense to non-Christians out there! I really do! If you think me annoying, than ignore me. But I know that most of us on here love our beloved Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia.

Quote from link above:
"Atheism for children is how some people describe the new children's fantasy film and the books from which it derives. "The anti-Narnia" is how some supporters of the film -- not just critics -- see it."
And I know alot of us here love our Narnia!
-sorry if I offended anyone out there who might be Atheist. I mean no offence, honestly. Or to any non-Christians. I just thought I'd say what I think about this movie/book trilogy.
*doen'ts want to completely change the subject* So you guys are talking about the books? Shouldn't that go in the Literature section?

Urm.... I like Narnia... and LOTR.... and His Dark Materials.... and I'm not a Christian.... I don't care what the supposed message is, I just like the books. I didn't even "get" the whole ending of Narnia and what Aslan was meant to be, I just took it as part of the story.
And personally I think people are going to far about this film. Seriously, any intelligent kid who reads the book would not suddenly think Christians are evil and that they really do, do nasty things to children in the way it is described in the book.
No, not really. I was merely mentioning I thought that a character in the film looked to old, until I realised in the book, the character is also old.
Anyway.... does anyone know if the second film is in the pipeline? Or do you reckon it will probably be announced after they see how this film does at the box office?

^Exactly why I meant no offence!

Well the Church is basically the villain in the books, and they do things to children, and one of the characters is waging war with God etc. I mean, I can see why Church people might be upset... but there's a lot of books out there that knock non-religious people as well... so... you just have to ignore it really. It is only a book afterall, a story, not fact.

Well, Pullman has stated that he did not like Narnia. He was rather critical of it. I wasn't too fond of the Narnia books either. And as far as I know of, His Dark Materials had nothing to do with Lord of the Rings. And Pullman did not intend His Dark Materials to be anti-Narnia. That idea probably came from zealots from both sides. People just noticing that they were some similarities and Pullman's attitude to Lewis.
His Dark Materials is not an overly anti-religious book, and believe me, I've read a lot of them. It simply criticizes religious dogma and oppression, that teaches us to believe with blind faith rather than to think freely as we see fit. Pullman himself states that his argument in His Dark Materials can be extended to all religions who oppress free thought. Which is extremely ironic seeing as they are now boycotts and protests to ban the movie and the book. They're simply proving Pullman right. If you want my advice, read the bloody books. I don't care if you're atheist or Christian or Muslim or Jew or Buddhist or pagan or whatever. Read them and then make opinions.
*sigh* Ok, rant's over.
JF- They say they moved the last three chapters from the Golden Compass to the second book, The Subtle Knife. So we might expect a second one. Kind of like what they did in Lord of the Rings, only they did the other way around. They've commissioned someone to write the scrips for the next two books but they emphasized that it's dependent on the financial success of the first one. Which makes sense. If Fellowship of the Ring or A New Hope wasn't a success, who would bother to make The Two Towers or The Empire Strikes Back?

I like what you said Caun, and totally agree with it. If people say that Philip is attempting to "brainwash" children towards Aethism, then you could also say that Lewis was attempting to "brainwash" children towards Christianity. It isn't a one way street.
I am excited for this movie, I loved the books, all of them, I understand what he is writing, and in some ways, I support it.
But lets be cautious here guys, this is breaching on being very religious dicussion-ish.
If anyone wishes to continues this discussion feel free to PM me.

I think that Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman will work fabulously together, even from the clips and trailer that I have seen, they have such chemistry! It's just amazing, plus Daniel Craig is real eye candy.

I heard that they'd done this too but to me it doesn't make sense at all. I think the ending of the first book was such a perfecting ending, especially the last sentence. It made sense to do that for LotR because it meant that all the fellowship stuff was together and we didn't start TTT with the death of a character non book readers might not remember that well from FOTR. But in this case surely it would make more sense to have all the up north stuff together as it is in the book.
The only reason I can think that they're doing it is that they're not sure it will make much money and so want it to be a complete film with a happy ending rather than a cliff hanger. Meh..
Appart from that I am getting pretty excited about this. The last trailer I saw looked excellent.

I know, but it's really hard to talk about this film and not mention the controversy. I've just been on FaceBook and my word, the amount of groups set up about boycotting the film and it just made me mad.
Anyway, Daniel Crag and Nicole Kidman are going to do fine, fine jobs and also the supporting cast as most of them are respected older actors. I'm not sure about the kids, or the fact their daemons seem to talk in child-like voices.
@ Frosty - Well with LOTR, they had already filmed TTT so whether it was a success or not, they still had it made. With this though... I'm hope it's popular as the story will need to be finished.

Well they're all not too sure if they're going to make much money from it. Essentially it depends on the financial success. Add in the fact that it's a controversial film and I think I can understand their concern. I really hope they do though.
I'm quite optimistic about Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman as well. Though at first, I had my doubts about Kidman, I'm sure she'll do fine. And as for the children voicing the daemons, well, they represent children, don't they? And I heard Stelmaria and she didn't sound like a child. She sounds like more of a young adventurous female. I'm most excited about Eva Green though.
