When Saruman is making his speech to the Uruk-Hai ( "A new power is rising. Its victory is at hand. This night, the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan! March to Helm's Deep! Leave none alive! To war!") we see a shoot of Grima with a tear running down his face. Why? Can he possibly be sad? Maybe I missing something... But I just don't get it!

Well, he was once a man of Rohan. Perhaps he is feeling a brief moment of regret at the thought of the destruction of Rohan?

^That's what I figured too.
That, and well... Eowyn is a woman of Rohan. Maybe that's significant? *shrug*
And I think his horrified look spoke clearly "what have I done?"

I agree with all the above! He realizes that he has played a part in selling out the race of man. Saruman said it would begin with Rohan!

And I was also thinking ~ Here Saruman is a White Wizard and Grima had no idea that he had been creating this vast army. What did Treebread say: "A wizard should know better!" Wizards should be peaceful and yet here Saruman had gone so far as to build an army! One to destroy the race of man, beginning with Grima's own homeland of Rohan! Yes, he's "in" Saruman's control, but I would say obviously not clued in at all on what Saruman was really up to. When he saw that army, I think he truly realized exactly what evil Saruman was capable of and that he had assisted him in that evil which was now going to destroy his homeland and the race of man. All of this assaults his mind as he stands and sees the army that Saruman has created.

yeah i guess he had a twinge of guilty conscience at that moment.he betrayed his people but he didnt think they would be destroyed at that large scale.

I agree with you all. When Grima arrives in Orthanc and see the army gahered and prepared to war he looks truly surprised. His service to Saruman might have started as his own personal revenge over Theoden but turned out to be a complete destruction of his people, and I don't think even Grima had seen that coming.
We don't see much of Grima in the movies but I never saw him as an evil man in the merciless understanding of evil, but only as a man. He is human and thus subjected to flaws, feelings and emotions. But this analysis should probably rather be elaborated in the appropriate Grima threads.

I think it was a combination of two things:
"OMG! What the "!@!"@$% have I got myself into here"
And:
"Gosh darn it. Throwing in my lot with this old white chap, may not have been such a good idea after all. I thought he might knock the Rohan people up a bit... seems the he's more into the obliterate idea." [snaps fingers]

That would suck to be in his position right there - I think mainly because a wizard who is supposed to be good and help the cause for good has turned evil and is now going to run Rohan and the Westfold amok with is uruk-hai.

I would agree with you guys' first explanations about him feeling a little regret. I like Tolkien's recurring theme that the bad people were once good and made wrong choices.
But I happen to know that his extreme concentration caused his nose and eyes to run. I'm guessing that the wind, or maybe fans blowing at them, would contribute to that.
