Well, I know that the elves sailed to Valinor when the age of Men began, but a) was their ever an age of dwarves and b) what happened to them? Because Tolkien once said that Middle-earth was indeed our world, except in a long ago time when the shape of the continents were different. As there are no dwarves here now, what happened to them? I understand that there is supposed to be an essay on this topic in one of the History of Middle-Earth books, but I would rather not have to buy a book just to answer this question

So, does anyone know?

Well, I don't mean that I believe in the existence of a middle-earth; I am just thinking along the lines that, if Tolkien intended middle-earth to be our world a very long time ago - a fictional time - then we must ASSUME that something happened to the dwarves. I don't mean that I actually believe in them - no offense to anyone.

But thanks, Aerlinn!

Maybe they turned into stone or something. Hey, sorry to get off subject, but what about the trolls?

Mmm... but trolls are of a completely different race than dwarves. I think there are still dwarves out there, maybe living past Mirkwood in the Misty Mountains. Otherwise, they may have died out what with the seeming lack of female dwarves. :)

I think the dwarves didn't disappear. I think they did go back to the lonely mountain. And lived there for long, without any one knowing they are there.
or maybe Legolas did knew it, because he did go once with Gimli to the Glittering caves. maybe there were dwarves.

Tolkien didn't say anything about it (in my opinion, im sorry, if im wrong) and I think he would left that for our own imagenation. like he did too for the ents. and other races.

so, what happend to the dwarves, its up to you (I think ;) )

They've gone into hiding, naturally. Keep an eye out whenever you're near mountains, you might see one. ;)

JK, that was a joke. I honestly don't know. I'm sorry to say I've never really thought that much about it.

Maybe they were assimilated into the Human race?

Nah, I think that there would still be Dwarves somewhere, hiding in the mountains and making awesome metalwork, and perhaps, knowing the grudging nature of the Dwarves, they are plotting vengeance.

It appears, as has already been mentioned, that Dwarves, like Hobbits were destined to continue but to leave more secluded lives. Hobbits seem to live lives like our 'Leprechauns' (spelling?), small little blighters which are impossible to catch or even see, and thus they enter the realm of fantasy. Dwarves seem to just continue on in their mountains, or maybe now have adapted to completely underground lives?

On the subject of an 'Age of Dwarves' - no. Elves were the Firstborn Children of Iluvatar and the First theme Iluvatar set into the Music of the Ainur. They were destined to start greatly and then deminish later. Unlike Men who spent long years under their shadow, and then rose up to become the dominate race after the Second Age.
Dwarves were not the Children of Iluvatar. At least not his own (though of course everything was his own, being the Allfather, but lets not dig too deep a hole to get out of here and keep things simple). They were his adopted Children. But they did not have their own theme in the Music of the Ainur, and thus their history isn't as great or as noted as it is with Elves and Men. This is why Dwarves have never had a golden age nor a downfallen age. You could say their downfall was when they awoke Durin's Bane I suppose. But basically Dwarves have always been the side-liners. Never rising to a dominate power but just continuing on their existance on the borders of Elvers and Men.

I agree with Zimraphel the whole way. I think they just don't come into the rest of the events in Middle Earth, so they're not mentioned.
