Lol, so have I... Gladiator.. but it's a long time ago... Hmm.. I liked what you said about the posh accent.. it makes perfect sense. I think it's what English students here aim for. So intimidating really... it scares the heck out of me when they do it.

The thing is, it's so easy to sound posh! Trust me. ;) Although, sounding posh is not always the best thing. Makes you sound stuffy and high-browed if you know what I mean.

I do so wish , that A-U had, like MSN, a nudge button. Twould save me having to post with content with regards to just bringing the clubbeh back to first page ;)
But that is digressional from teh British point at this point in time.

So, good morning to everybody, :hug:s to everybody, and a hearty word of advice from The Dude (from the film the Big Lebowski):

"Hey! Careful, man, there's a beverage here! "

I thank you

D'ya know something? If we all believed everything in the papers we'd be scared to death.

There I was today, in Derbyshire, having a nice look around and I happened to glance at a newspaper which was basically saying if your overweight your going to get cancer, as new studies have proven that if your overweight the chances of you getting cancer are greater.

I mean come on. We're already told not to eat this, and to eat that, and there was a list of things that we shouldn't eat like processed meats, red meat, sweet things, fizzy drinks (I'm not sure if they are saying eating those things will cause cancer, or if you eat those things you'll become overweight which will put you at risk to cancer, although I'm guessing it's the latter) and another paper said "What Is Safe To Eat?" (I think they were being sarcastic as opposed to being serious).

Seriously though, we all know that we shouldn't get to the stage where we're so overweight, but these reports always seem to suggest no matter how overweight you are or how little, you're gonna be in trouble.

So let set me off worrying of course, as these things do. I mean I'm overweight, not like Pavarotti or anything, but I have a little bit of weight that shouldn't be there, the same as my brother. But everyone in our house drinks sugar free stuff (except my brother) but on the other hand he drinks lots of orange juice. Processed meats? Well we buy packets of meat to put on sandwiches but is that so bad? We don't eat them by the truckload. And what's wrong with frozen food? That's what we eat in our house, and mainly Asda's "Good For You" range... is that so bad? And fast food... there must be millions of people who just have them as a treat or maybe a burger a day... is that also so bad?

Grr. So anything I ate for the rest of the day I was worrying if I should be eating it, or if I did should I order my coffin in the shape of Gandalf's hat? [which I've said I'm having if I shuffle off this mortal coil]

 I don't know. Is it something that I should be worrying about? And then I look at all the people today who were much more overweight than me, and I was wondering if they were worrying about it?

Or is this another case of the papers being scaremongers? I mean look at bird flu. 3 Christmasses ago we were going to have it in the UK widespread, and it was going to kill 2 million people, and last year was for definite.... still no show.

I think it's like that in every country. It seems as though it's impossible to find a truly accurate newspaper nowadays. Everything seems to be turning into a tabloid for rumours of every kind. If it's not the bird flu pandemic, something we already know about [such as your example], or an article on what the latest celebrities are doing [which always seems to revolve around getting drunk, doing drugs, or getting arrested :eyeroll:] then it's something else equally ridiculous.

Why not report about the things that really matter, eh?

Yeah, that's very true.

I think they do it just to worry people.

And believe me it works. :P

They make out that everyone a bit podgy has had it. When it's probably more likely to refer to the really obsese and unhealthy. I think a lot of people can be safetly "round" without verging into "OMG, ur gonna dieeeee!" if you know what I mean? :P

It seems like all news is bad news thses days, if you catch my drift.

And as for most of these so called Celebrities, such as BB contestants, they havent really, in my opinion, earned their fame. But they end up being considered as celebrities, and all these gossip magazines don't help by running stories on what they eat etc. We worship "celebs" too much imo.

As for the health thing, Im not exactly adonis,Im a bit overweight, but I don't really mind, because Im not uber restricted in what I can do. It seems like our government and media will force people to live how they see fit, whilst they should just give the public the information impartially and let them choose for themselves, rather than giving people hell for it.

[Rantness over]

Thanks guys. I feel much better now. :-)

With the Second World War slipping from memory"

Says bloody who? How can anyone possibly say that!?! There are still veterans, every November we are surrounded by people buying and selling poppies.. what the *!"*^@@!

[I know that's not what the article is about but that really peeved me]

Urm... well all I can say is, if they are just looking for another even to commercialize then they won't get very far. Non-religius people celebrate Christmas but who except those who follow the religon of Hindu etc, will want to celebrate those events?

Poltical correctness has gone mad. Has anyone actually aksed these people if they want all this? I'll bet you most of them don't care, all this sort of stuff is bringing their religion bad publicity and most likely unwanted attention.

Some people on the census put down ther religion as "Jedi". So tell me.... when do these poor souls get the chance to see Darth Vader fairy lights wound round lamposts and when can they go into a shop and listen to the melody "I Saw Momma Kissing A Wookie"?

Well they'll never get me celebrating any other religious events as they're nothing to do with me.

Yeah, I thought that's what they were trying to say. But they could have done without the "slipping from memory" crack.

*applauds* I wanted to say that, but I wasn't sure if that would be going too far. :P I agree, I have nothing against anyone who has whatever religion they feel like, and I totally, totally agree. We never did ask them to live over here, and if they don't like the fact every December they have to walk past Christmas lights. Tough.

It's a strange thing, we were only talking about this yesterday at home, at how at school assembly we used to sing religious songs and pray every day whether we were religious or not, and we wondered whether they still did this?

Lord, no Christmas tree? That's just wrong.

I don't know how this is all going to end you know. Because in 20 years time, there will be people who can say they are British, and therefore it is their country as well, and so they "can't got home" and they want not to be offended by fellow British people and their religions.

It is interesting to hear from you what a change you have observed within such a short time. For a non-Brit like me it is interesting both the fact that you used to sing religious hymns in school and now that you don't do it anymore. :-)

As far as IM concerned, this is just PC being concerned about what the minority, rather than the Majority say. I know dozens of Muslims, Skihs and other such religions who celebrate Christmas as a time of family, generousity and kindness. Why should we downgrade a celebration that has been in Britain for centuries, just because some people are whinging?
I believe each culture in Britian should maintain some of its own traditions, but should also bend the neck to customs and traditions native to this land also, British Customs, and should pay their first loyalties to the land they live in.We are traditionally Christain, and even though there are less Christians, why should the remainder suffer?
As for the conservatives thing, I don't want them in. David Cameron has one braincell less than an amoeba, and he would basically let the rich get richer and not give a stuff about anyone else.

This Labour Government needs to frankly, have some balls, and not be afraid to assert some power, otherwise we are getting the BNP in government, and I wouldnt wish to have this group, of what are essentially, the Nazi parties dark shadow, in government.

Bah! This is ridiculous. As far as I'm concerned this is just another reason to commercialise Christmas even more than it already is. It is a traditionally Christian holiday which makes it mainstream. Why downgrade Christmas just to shed more light on more minor holidays. Don't participate if you don't want to, that's my view on it. No one is forcing you to celebrate Christmas, so do what you believe in whether it's Islamist celebrations or Hindu celebrations.

Why even bring this up? I mean, yes, national unity is important, but I really don't think this is the way. As it is, we've never had to worry about it before...

Well, I will make a rather random post, with the quotability value behind it, and nothing but quotability value behind it..

"Conquering the world on horseback is easy; it is dismounting and governing that is hard."

i appear to have come into this discussion a little late, but here's my tuppence worth...

all this talk of downgrading christmas really gets on my nerves - it's like we in britain have become ashamed of our own religion/culture/traditions etc. i believe that we should be a tolerant society and accept other beliefs and practices, but we are still a christian country (nominally, at least) and so we should be able to celebrate christian festivals in public with pride. personally, i think that stuff like this does more to harm national unity than promote it - it annoys a lot of people, and that causes tension where there wasn't any before.

i'm a christian, and i feel more and more that i am being persecuted and ostracised because of it. british christians are obviously not being persecuted to the extent that christians in places like china are (and i thank the lord for that), but persecution is still happening in its own, very british way. satirists will quite happily mock christianity, while tiptoe-ing round other religions so as not to offend them; muslim girls are allowed to wear headscarves to school, but christians are not allowed to wear crosses (ostensibly for safety reasons, but i reckon you're far more likely to strangle yourself with a headscarf than with a cross); the islamic society in my old college was allowed to hold an islam awereness week, but the christian union was denied permission to organise a similar event...and so on. christianity is being discriminated against in order to accomodate other religions, and that'snot fair. equality and tolerance should extent to all religions, including the native one.

and i say NO to the conservatives. i'm not a big fan of any of the political parties at the moment (personally i'm old labour, which now doesn't exist thanks to tony blair) but i particularly hate the tories. smug capitalists. i reckon they'd only aggravate this situation anyway by going too far the other way and not being tolerant enough.
