Hi, this might be the wrong topic to discuss it but it seemed the most fitting without creating another useless one. Could someone please tell me if there is a difference between the word chae and the word kemen? Apparently they both mean earth (kemen seems to be the proper one), although I couldn't find chae anywhere except in Galadriel's opening speech in FotR. Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know the answer for sure, but it could be that kemen is Sindar and that chae is Quenya...'cause Galadriel is a Quenya Elf...right? :P

That could be it, but I've looked it up in both Quenya and Sindarin, and both come up with kemen or some variation of it. Thanks for your help though.

From what I've found...

Spring (season): "Ethuil/Spring [season]" (Sindarin), "Tuile/Spring(time)"
(Quenya)
Innocent: (can't find anywhere, sorry)
Innocence: (can't find anywhere, sorry)
Blessing: "bless,sanctify/aista-" (Quenya), "blessed/aman, man" (Sindarin)

Hope this helps a little... sorry I couldn't find innocent or innocence anyhere at ALL. :'(

hullo,

i'd be very happy if someone could translate the following sentence for me in sindarin and write it also in sindarin letters.

"Through darkness you may come to your hope."

thanks

That doesn't look right.

I'm not very good with Sindarin but I would think it should be "Im mela le" or "Melon le" (don't take my word for that though cause I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that it's not "melme" that's the Quenya noun form of "love".

I'm better at Quenya. You seem to be confusing it with that fake Elvish (I can't remember what it's called) I don't think amin is a word in Quenya or that a double L would be allowed at the beginning of a word.

I usually say "Tye-melin" for "I love you" in Quenya, following (more or less) the only (as far as I know) actual attested version of the phrase "I love you" found in the Lost Road. Though I use the aorist rather than the present tense because I feel that it makes a stronger statement to say that you love someone all the time than to just say that you love them at that moment.

If you want to say it word by word like in the English phrase, it'd be "Ni melë tye" (aorist) or "Ni méla tye" (present tense) or if you wanted to use the formal version of the pronoun "you" rather than the familiar "Ni melë/méla lye(or possibly le)"

P.S. I realize that this is over a year late, but it was bugging me so I had to say something.

Thank you for posting, Dark.
I think it's interesting to follow posts on language even though I never sat down to study it but I admire you guys who took time to learn Elvish grammar. I feel like studying the languages every time I see someone who have done it but it will probably have to wait until I get old and retire and get a bit more time at hand. :-)

Would anyone happen to know what "A curse upon you and your kind" and "Behind you" is in Sindarin?
