Anyone heard anything about this independent film?

http://www.thehuntforgollum.com/

It's not a hoax is it? Looks kind of interesting.

That looks really interesting. I was sad that Gollum was not in the traler, but I would like to read more into it, and I may even see it one day.

No, I'm not really interested in Peter Jackson rip-offs.

It was quite funny how they were desperately trying not to make the music sound as if they were taking it from the LOTR CD's and yet it definitely sounded like they had used a lot of the score but changed it round.

I don't see the point of it really. They probably just want a piece of the LOTR pie.

^I wouldn't say that now... I mean, they're just fans like us who happen to have more means of showing their fandom. It's like people like us dressing up at LotR Conventions or making fan vids out of clips, only a little more. Just because it's a small film adaptation of Tolkien, it doesn't make it a Jackson rip-off... he's just a huge inspiration, and I'm sure he finds this really cool himself!
:P

Well to be honest, I've never really understood why people dress up at these conventions. It seems to be taking things a bit far too me. I like the films and going to the LOTR convention would be enough for me to say to people "hey, I like LOTR too".

I'm not so sure making a LOTR film is another way of showing someone's love for the original. It seems like an odd thing to do really. Especially if it ends up being more Peter Jackson's LOTR than their own.

I think it's fun. I can understand how they would want to give it the same feeling as the other films and it's not like Peter Jackson can own a vibe... Definently wouldn't call it a rip-off.

If I had the means, I probably would have tackled some sort of LotR film by now. It's probably a great way for them to start their careers too.

Well we'll wait and see. But you know, if they start replicating certain scenes and using the same music but distorted, to me that's not being original, but copying the real LOTR films.

And as for starting a career off.. eh, I think if people want to do that, they'd probably get more kudos if they created something that was their own, as opposed to taking it from a book and a multi-award winning trilogy. But that might just be me.

For certain parts it might be interesting and neccesary to make the scene look the same. I will agree about the music though.

And I think you're only part right about starting out your career. If they had the right thing that could become a big hit, then yes that would be better, but doing something Tolkien is a better gamble because there is a fan-base for it already and people who will be more curious about it. I think they'd be much more likely to be spotted for this.

Anyone else think the woman who is going to appear as Arwen is very pretty? I don't know anything about her acting, but she looks like she would make a good elf (though it will be weird to see someone other than Liv replying to the name of Arwen).

I think she's pretty.

I haven't seen this before, but it looks pretty real to me.

Interesting.

Sure, they could've used different fonts and music, but seriously, it just looks like fans making a film for the sake of making a film. I don't think it's a big rip-off, I mean, me and one of my friends are making a spoof film of the movies...{Of course, our film is totally wacky, cheesy, and there are only two actors portraying about 10 characters each. XD}

To be honest, I think this is fan-made. Doesn't look quite real to me.
And if it is real, well...I'd not be waiting for it. It seems like it is just something made by someone who wants a big name by doing something LOTR-like...not my cup of tea

It's fan-made... did you not check out the link/our posts? :P
Professional directors aren't the only people entitled to making films of the things they love and are interested in. Everyone else has that right too. They're Tolkien's fans too... what makes you think they're doing it to make their name big? They're just regular fans like all of us on this here forum who are interested in showing their fandom in a more elaborate way. Hell I wouldn't mind doing something of the sort of I had the means/interest.

This is definately not a hoax. My dad has talked to the people who are filming this and I for one applaude them. Fan-Films are hard work.

Oh, no. They definitely aren't trying to get a piece of the pie or make a rip-off. I'm really surprised that people got that impression. I found Hunt for Gollum a few months ago after following the Born of Hope project for more than a year. About this and the dressing up comment, let me see if I can explain well...
Basically, people who are in the Tolkien universe tend to be creative, I think. People who don't like to use their mind wouldn't read the books, or see the movie more than once or twice. Since Ringers are a creative bunch, many people want to contribute to the universe, or reflect their appreciation, by creating something of their own in honor of the works.
For a lot of people it's writing fanfiction (which is something I tend to look down on, probably erroneously), for some, it's graphics. You take what you're good at and roll with it, you know? Some people are good at costuming. I suppose it sounds strange to want to dress up, but I'm one of those strange people. I'm really good at sewing. There aren't a whole lot of things I'm good at, but I've done a lot of sewing over the years, so costuming is what I'm good at and it's a good contribution for me to make. Or a good way for me to participate. Because it's what I'm good at. Music also would be a good contribution for me.
And some people love filmmaking, and want to respond in the medium that the story was presented in. One of the clues that should let one know that these people aren't in for a piece of the pie is that it's out-of-pocket. They have to come up with the money and time on their own.

I think part of it is also that these people want to see another part of the story on film, so they make it. As to the music being the same, I don't think that's any badly-concealed secret- I thought it was really cool the first time I heard it. They're trying to make their film fit in.

So there's my take on it. Do you feel the same way about those (exceptionally nerdy but very well-meaning) fans who make Star Trek fan films? Or Star Wars, or any other major fandom. These are just people who happen to have the resources, translating their love for Tolkien into a contribution to the fan base. I think it's great.

Woo hoo! The release date is coming closer. I for one can not wait. I think it is going to be a most impressive fan film. They have a new trailer up now that shows a bit of Gollum.

http://thehuntforgollum.com/

I have had the pleasure of assisting them with some graphic work and by doing so got to see a lot of the behind the scenes pictures, etc.. They really went all out on the effects and it is going to be GOOD. I'm very excited for them.
