I think it's a good idea to read the books first. Then the movies simplify the story and help you understand it. Then you go back and read the books and yell a little more about what they should have put in the movies and didn't. Then watch the movies again anyway, cause you can't help it. After that it doesn't matter.

I watched the movies first. My parents said we were going to watch it but I knew nothing about it! I first read the books last year.

I saw the fellowship of the ring when I was 10, then I read all the books, then I saw the 2 towers and the return of the king when they came out at the cinema, so...it's something like a mixture :P

I read the books first,
long before the cartoons and the movies ever came out

Well.... I knew about and read the Hobbit and some of FotR before I actually saw the movies (but I never cared enough to read the rest of them)... and that was a few years before FotR was out on dvd so by then I pretty much forgot about it... then FotR came out and I watched it... however not 'til a few months after TTT was out on dvd did I really get into LotR. So then I really read the books and actually cared about them. So it's sort of half and half for me. :P although I did read RotK before I watched it in the theater. :teehee:

I would have loved to read them earlier, but maybe I was too young to understand the books...I mean, everytime I read them I understand new things, so...but that's fantastic, so...

I had been to see the Fellowship of the Ring before I had read the books. Then I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy before the Two Towers had been released in theatres. So I suppose it is a little of both but technically I did see one of the movies before I had read all of the books... So movies. :P

They sort of happened at the same time for me. :P My friend told me about this AWESOME movie she had just seen in theaters (RotK) and I was intrigued. However, Rin's parents said that it was far to violent for little Rin *pat pat*. Annoyed but not to be stopped, I checked out FotR from the library and began to read. At some point I remeber my Dad renting TTT and me watching it with him. I read through TTT and RotK before I went to see RotK in theaters that winter. Then in March, Dad got the first two movies for his birthday and I finally got to see FotR. Honestly, though, my first time through the books I was very confused and probably didn't get or remember half of it. I would have to read through the books many more times before I felt like I had a good understanding of them; plus, seeing the movies really helped keep track of what was going on.

As for which you should should see/read first, it depends on your style. If you're more of a book fan in general, or if you want to imagine everything in your mind for the first time, or to be able to watch the movies while comparing them to the books, or can handle the reading level, then sure! Books first. If you don't mind either way when it comes to movies or books, or prefer to have a general guide when it comes to the plot before diving into Tolkein, movies first. :P

I think that's actually a pretty good advice :)
