Yes, it's finally here. The Horatio Hornblower fan club - for all of you who have seen the miniseries and loved Horatio with all his mistakes (not many) and his virtues (quite a few). So, here's the place to discuss your favorite episodes and characters, as well as the books, and anything else relating to Horatio.
We currently have three (3) members.
1. Meldawen
2. Johnny's Fan
3. Firiel

That's what I mean by miniseries, to clarify
We don't own them and we really need to. Though I'm not a huge fan of episode four, with Mariette, I thought it was rather out of character for Horatio.

Is that the one with the French bird? She was annoying. I have 4 on video and one on DVD. The four on video are in order but the is out of sequence so I haven't watched it yet.

Yes, the french school-teacher person. I didn't find her annoying so much as I found Horatio's sudden attraction to her and his resulting odd behavior annoying. He gets married in the books! It's scary! I never wanted him to be married, I wanted him nicely single and adventurous.

I just thought she looked the type to use him as her ticket to another life. And he acted really weird. She wasn't even really good looking. He get's married in the a later episode as well. I really like Admiral Pellew, Robert Lindsay is such a great actor.

Does he? I knew he got engaged but maybe there are new ones I haven't seen. I'll have to check it out. I really like Archie (Kennedy), he's so sweet and nice and I hate it when he dies. Bush is good too, but Archie's better. And I loved Pellew from the moment I saw him, he's such an awesome captain.

Just out of interest how many have you seen? They have only made six episodes haven't they.

Yeah, I've seen all six but I thought there might be new ones. I'll have to do some surfing, I'm not sure.

Can I join? I love the series! He's married in the last two movies, anyway. To Mariah.

Wow... this club has sorta... died?
Well anyway, I've actually started reading the Hornblower books now. I've read the first one, were he is a Midshipman. It's a strange book, as there aren't chapters but individual stories from the first few years of him being Midshipman. Admiral Pellew is actually a Captain at the moment, and the three hands who in the TV series are always with Hornblower - Styles, Matthews and Oldyord - aren't really in it much. So the TV series have really given them more to do.... which is a shame because I was expecting them to be in the book more, so I'm disappointed.
I'm also disappointed because Hornblower never serves with them or the ship the Indy again - it's not the books fault, it's the TV series for messing round with the stories and making me like characters more. Kennedy makes a very brief appearance but I don't think I'm going see anything of him either, unless he gets transferred to one of Hornblower's later ships.
And Hornblower does get married in the 4 the book (which I got today at the library even though I need to finish book 2 and read book 3) and he also has a child.
I really like what I have read so far - apart from the fact I'm not going to read more about characters I like - and even with all the technical jargon, they're quite easy to read and understand.

Wow, I forgot I'd even made this club. Well.
I've read some of the books too, though I forget which ones. It was a while ago. Haven't seen the movies in ages, either - should really do that.
Added you, Firiel
