HOBBIT NEWS - Del Toro's influence
Peter Jackson recently commented on how much of Guillermo del Toro's influence still remains in The Hobbit. Del Toro, the director of such films as Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, was announced as The Hobbit's director back in 2008, when the film's legal issues with the Tolkien estate had finally been cleared up. However, not long afterwards MGM Studios, who holds The Hobbit's movie rights, began to flounder financially, and the film stalled in pre-production. As it is somewhat his specialty, Del Toro already began designing many of the creatures and monsters in The Hobbit, including Smaug, before departing the production in 2010 to move on to other projects.
This week, PJ said frankly that there's little left of Del Toro's original vision. He says, ' had designed a lot of the movie... I looked at his designs when he took over and a lot of his designs are very Guillermo... it was very much stuff that you would recognize from Pan’s Labyrinth or Hellboy. It was his artistic vision and I couldn’t make that movie. I looked at his designs and I said the only person who can make a Guillermo Del Toro movie is Guillermo. It shouldn’t be me. I can’t put my head into somebody else’s idea I have to generate it from the beginning. So really I redesigned the film pretty much. Some of Guillermo’s DNA is in there there were some things he did that I thought were pretty cool and I’ve taken bits of pieces of his stuff kind of altering it and changing it as I saw it. But the film was largely redesigned.'

Del Toro remains credited as a co-scriptwriter, having also worked on the script with PJ, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens before leaving the film.

HOBBIT NEWS - How much of Smaug in the first film?
It's a question most of us have been asking, and now Benedict Cumberbatch has provided an answer. "I think my eye might open at the end of the first film, and then you'll get the rest of me in the second," he told British media. Darn. Is it 2013 yet?
