I was just wondering why there is no Hobbit thread? There's the FotR, TTT, RotK, and the Silmarillion (and, ok, miscellaneous). But I think that the Hobbit deserves an individual spot there, and I'm sure there are plenty of Hobbit fans out here. But let's be realistic - there just can't be a LotR forum without a Hobbit related thread. I dunno, just a suggestion. Anyone else who's noticed this slip?

I think it's a wonderful idea! It seems that since we don't have a Hobbit board all the threads that could go into it have to go somewhere else. I think it'd help with organisation too.

I think it's pretty appropriate ... after all, there is a sub-forum for each of the other books as well, and the Hobbit is the intro book.

One idea we're discussing is expanding the Sil. book board to INCLUDE the Hobbit. Another is Quote: making the Silm board an "Other works by Tolkien" subforum. Maybe that could also include some of his non-Middle-earth stuff, like Mr. Bliss () or his various translations?

^ooh right ... that's a better idea ... ... cos then we can discuss things like the History of Middle-earth and, like you said, his other books as well

I have seen hobbit forums on other sites. they are never very active. But I think it would be fun.

I like this idea! I've never gone in the Silm forum since I haven't read it, but if it became a more general forum, I'd most likely pop in!

I thought the LotR Misc. Book forum was for books like the Hobbit, Lost Road and other Middle-earth related books. Perhaps a mod should sticky a specific Hobbit book thread there to see how popular it becomes and what kind of discussions would be taking place in order to determine if there was an actual need for a Hobbit sub-forum.
The Sil is still the most popular and best known Middle-earth related reading so I think it deserves its own sub-forum and the discussions there are pretty active.
Somehow I think it would be ackward to be talking about Tolkien's non-Middle-earth books on a LotR-related board, however, I don't mind discussing other Middle-earth related books there as they would add new views and perspectives to the discussions, like Christopher Tolkien's publications or even other writers' theories.

I don't see the fuss about The Hobbit having its own sub-forum. I mean seeing as the Silmarillion has it's own, and it is by-far the most difficult* and unorthodox* work concerning Middle-Earth. Therefore the Hobbit, being the simplest and probably the most read, I think, would be a no-brainer! I'm not gonna rant or am ranting about this issue, it just struck me as odd that it did not have its own sub-forum! That perhaps people don't dicuss it much or at all in the 'misellaneous Tolkien books' sub-forum may be because of the lack of incentive. Personally I find the Hobbit as indispensible as the Silmarillion in any LotR collection! (It's always nice to fall back to this light read after tackling the LotR and/or Sil.). Anyway I hope it is being discussed .
*Notes- Not meaning it is hard, but the writing style and vocabulary is definately a level or two higher than the LotR. And unorthodox in that there is no medium (the book revolving around a central thing, though I suppose the Silmarils kinda deliver on this...) or linear story, rather is it much like a history textbook.

I just think that the title of that sub-form [[The Silmarillion]] should be changed to "The History of Middle-earth", cos that would cover all the rest of Tolkien's books, including the Hobbit and the Silmarillion.
