Oh yeah, I've heard of that book. It does sound very interesting, but part of me wonders if it'll be a bit unrealistic. I mean, Darcy is Darcy. There aren't any other people just like him. And Darcy has flaws, too, as well as Elizabeth. I just don't want to read a book that tells me I need to wait for THE perfect man who's already a refined gentleman at age 20. I don't want that, in some ways. I want him to be wild, too.

I don't know, that's just my first impression of hearing about this book. I should probably just read it and then decide.

Hmm. I can see why you might think that Gwen, as that was my first impression as well, but I think we should read it before we make presumptions.

The summary given on amazon.co.uk is this:

Yeah, I can see that. I don't want my guy to be perfect either, but he had better be pretty far along in his maturity process. As for gentleman-ness...you know, it really depends. I would certainly hope he would act like a gentleman towards me, but that should be just part of his personality. I would like him to be 'real' around me, too--for some reason, 'gentleman' has a slightly negative connotation with me because it implies that they act one way towards you and differently towards others--true, they might be more polite around you, but I would rather he be mostly-polite all of the time than just up the politeness around me because I'll like him more. (And you know I will. I'm a sucker for gentleman-ness -- aren't we all? )

Aw, that sounds sort of mean. Geeks can be loveable too. *hugs a geek* But the book does sound pretty interesting.

Well were just saying we have a habit of referring to our ideal man as "Mr.Darcy" [from Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice] and we were wondering if you guys have a female version of that..

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't an equivalent of Mr. Darcy for guys. I don't think there are any literary works that have the same position for guys as Austen and the like have for girls.

No, neither do I, I'm afraid. It's all too hard to find a perfect girl in literature. Well then again, it's nearly impossible to find a flawless girl in any work of fiction that isn't acclaimed.

I wouldn't neccesarily call Darcy 'flawless', but his appeal does seem to be universal. That's interesting, that there isn't a girl counterpart for guys. Is it simply because every guy wants something different, you think? Or is the perfect character out there, just not put down in words yet? What traits do you think she would possess, then?

Even I gave it some though, yet every female book character I thought of just didn't seem like a Darcy. That's very interesting. But Rin, it can't be because every guy wants something different, because not every girl wants to the same thing. *is thoughtful*

Mmm. Good point. You've got me there.

Little Women indeed! Plenty of variety..

Maybe it's because girls and guys just have different ideas about romance? I mean... every girl is a romantic, every girl wants one special guy to sweep her off her feet... guys don't want girls to sweep them off their feet, do they? I mean, I'm not a guy myself, so I don't know anything, but I think guys want to, when they find the special someone, to care for them, stand up for them when needed, basically fulfill the duty of a man for that woman. I'm not saying that girls don't want to do that for that special guy, but men and women are different in romance. I hope that makes sense, I'm not sure that I've fully got my point across, but hopefully, you understand what I mean?

Anyway, could I join this club, pretty please?

That's a very good point that you bring up. What exactly is romantic to guys? Girls tend to like the works; Mr. McDreamy comes along, sweeps you off your feet, and you ride off into the sunset. Or something like that.
