But that's just the point Phoenix and I were trying to make Darky. Everyone grieves differently, and just because she didn't drop everything and sob to her hearts content doesn't mean she might not later. The actual fact that he's dead may not have completely registered in her mind because of all the other things she's going through at the moment.

I didn't think there was any grief missing from Elizabeth's character. How upset she was over her father's death nearly brought me to tears - she wasn't bawling, but she was obviously distraught and screaming, it was like she could hardly control herself. Then when Will was dying, I thought she acted the part very well. How focused she was on keeping him alive, continually telling him to look at her, that was as moving as crying to me. The last scene, yeah, it could've used more sadness, but then I guess that's just their characters. They're trying to enjoy themselves as much as they possibly can. Plus, I would be sort of happy if I was Elizabeth, considering she recently thought her husband was dead. At least she gets to spend some time with him instead of him being gone forever.
And I would never have thought to blame the actress. The first thing I thought of when someone suggested she couldn't cry was the scene in Pride and Prejudice where she does, and I think she cries a few more times (or gets close to, anyway) in that movie.
Elizabeth's character, in all of the movies, seems to be the type that goes crazy when they're upset. She'll shout and run around and wave her arms around if she wants something to happen. (Ex: Trying to convince Norrington to go after Will.) Then her later reaction might be to huddle up in a ball. Another example, in CotBP, her first reaction to the undead crew is basically running around screaming her head off. Then she curls into a ball in the corner. It's like an upsetting situation just causes her system to go into breakdown mode. Like when your computer gets very mad at you and flashes lights at you and closes everything and makes weird beeping noises and then dies.
Plus, in Elizabeth's situation, there is a whole lot going on. Maybe busying herslef provides a needed distraction from greif. Maybe the writers just needed her to focus on the next issue. Everyone grieves differnetly, as has been repeated here many times by now.

My, I'm going to sound repetitive! I agree everyone grieves differently, and Elizabeth's reaction could have worked in a book where the author could say "Elizabeth was sad beyond tears, so she began to scream and shut down." (Only much more eloquently than that! ) But looking at it from a film making point of view, most people cry when they're grieving, and those who don't cry know that the typical reaction is tears. So the best way of showing grief on film is to cry. Even though Elizabeth's not the crying type, a few tears to say "Okay, I'm sad about what's happening to me now," couldn't have hurt. I'm not saying she should have been sobbing throughout the movie, because you know she's stronger than that, but when something as terrible as having your [s]fiance[/s] husband ( ) stabbed through the heart without pity and seeing your whole future crumble before your eyes and be pulled away from him... no one would think a few tears on her cheeks are out-of-place. Actually, since Elizabeth's already proved how strong she is, a couple of tears would have shown how torn up she really is, because you'd know that only something completely catastrophic could coax those tears out.
(By the way, everyone's making really good arguements and it probably won't bother me as much next time I see it. And anyway it's nice to hear the different points of views... the world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions! )

Woo! *accepts trophy*
Funny, because while I was writing it, I was thinking, "This is making no sense at all... "

OK, so Elizabeth grieves differentyl, but the way she grieved still didn't satisfy me, not one bit. That was the stale acting in the movie. Sure, some people may just sit there, thinking, or start screaming or do what ever they do to grieve, but Keira didn't pull it off, sorry, it just didn't come off as grieveing for me.
It's still bothering me that we dont know what mark Jack left on Buckett... and we'll probably never find out... -__-

I spelt it wrong? Oh, thats right, it Beckett, wow, im totally going insane. If i was a writer, and i couldn't think of what the mark was, i'd just say that no one is supposed to know...

I reckon.... it was scar Jack left with his sword on Beckett's throat... maybe something similar to what he did to Elizabeth in COTBP, but this time with a sword and he did cut him... maybe that would exaplain why Beckett always wears clothing that covers his throat.

I dunno if we're ever going to sort out all this stuff about Elizabeth [or rather, Keira] and her inability to cry. We all have different opinions on how one should grieve and because of that I don't think we'll ever be able to convince one another that we're right.
As for the mark Jack left on Beckett.. one can only speculate I guess. A scar or something like it is probably the closest we'll get. Personally, I really can't think of much else..

How I see it is: Typically people grieve when someone dies. It appeared to me that Elizabeth was trying to get "one last moment" with Jack, and that she would have started to cry when he actually died.
I believe Eowyn did the same thing in Rotk.

I always thought it'd be cool if Jack had branded Beckett as a pirate, too. I went back and read about the Wicked Wench and the slaves, and Beckett does seem like quite a pirate, in his own way.
There could have been a brief, two second scene of Beckett branding Jack with the P and then Jack yelling something like "You're the pirate!" and grabbing the brand and branding Beckett. It could have been a little flashback when Beckett holds up the brand and says "And we've both left our mark on the other."

i dont think Beckett was marked in the same way that Jack was.i dont think Beckett's mark was one u could see.like Jack obviously escaped after he was branded.maybe Beckett said that cos Jack defied the East India Co and Beckett was a bit,um,miffed*about being tricked by a pirate.maybe being humiliated by Jack was the 'mark'.
(*ok i was thinking of a different phrase for that bit but i didnt want to use coarse language)

well i actully saw POTC:At World's End and yeah ok it's a nice movie with a bitter-sweet end but i think the first movie was better.Johny Depp is actually Jack Sparrow,i can not imagine any actor would have so much success in playing Jack other than Depp. Also, about Elizabeth...i don't think she was having "a last moment" with Jack in the second movie...she was trying to lure him into a trap. That is my opinion... and about elizabeth's inability to cry...well you must be right, her father was killed, her husband(Will)meets her every 10 years...i would have killed myself already...is this strength...or i can't tell...
(btw i need some help from any of you people...i don't know how to put a banner in my signature like you all do,if any1 sees this post plz i would appreciate any help)
