A thread for those who have finished Eldest, the sequal to Christopher Paolini's Eragon. An absolutely amazing novel! *Runs off to read it again*

Anything you read further from this point on will be solely because you do not care about getting major spoilers and/or you read upon your own will.

No one in that posts in this thread will be blamed/accused of spoiling anything due to a slow reader, lazy reader, or just plain lazy.

Thank you.

SPOLIERS BELOW!

The fact that Oromis and his dragon had survived the Fall came as a rather large shock to me. Anyone else? :bounce:

And from the old thread...

Yeah, that was a twist I didn't expect.

I did, however, expect that Murtahg and Eragon would find out they were brothers. Still I was so sad when Murtahg becomes an enemy. I really liked him.

Yeah, Chris left clues all through both books. Personally, I thought Roran would be the one to betray Eragon.

"Then, when all seem lost and your power is insufficient, go to the rock of Kuthian and speak your name to open the Vault of Souls."
Both the king and Murtagh are much more powerful than Eragon, I cannot see him defeating them alone. I think that he may end up bringing the past dragon riders back from the dead... Just a thought...

Like in ROTK when Aragorn enlists the help of the dead to save Minas Tirith. That would seem a very plausible way for Paolini to have it work out.

Yup.

Anyway, back on the topic of Murtagh, I have a feeling that Eragon will eventually have to kill him in the third book. Empire, I think it is called... It is quite a shame he turned.

I hope Murtagh doesn't get killed. I'd rather some way is found to free him from Galbortorix's commands.

Maybe destroying Galbortorix will break the oaths Murtagh and Thorn swore, but as long as he's alive... He knows their true names. :annoyed2:

Kit, do you want to keep this a sticky, since it doesn't seem like very many people are posting on it?

I haven't even read Eragon yet (although I plan to really soon), so I'm not learned enough to comment on the topic at hand :p

Well, I've just finished with Part One. Then I got back here and ... well, spoilers were quite predictable. Hey - no offence to book or writer or anything, I've just read too much stories to be frequently surprised :-D

But I'm planning to read Eldest as soon as I get it :)

I just finished Eldest. (yep, i've basically read ever since I got up this morning, and talked my brother into handing it over...)

I really liked it. I was terrified that Roran was going to be the one that betrayed Eragon, but I'm not sure that it is Murtagh makes it any better. Though I understand that Murtagh was forced to do it, and Roran's betrayal I think would have come through choice...

I think if Murtagh dies at the hands of Eragon... well, it would be at the hands of a brother, and it would be ultimately to save him. I don't think Eragon is going to lose his sense of proportion, and I think "blood is thicker than water" WILL have to come into it at some point, especially since they were companions.
Murtagh will be free if Galbatorix dies... so that is an option.

I think it will also be interesting to see how Arya/Eragon plays out...

It was so freaking when Eargon caught up with Roran again!

How many times has Eragon completely blown it with Arya now? :goofy:

Ha, yeah! Well, I don’t think Eragon’s going to drop it, either. He’s a dragon rider – he almost looks like an elf, and in that way Arya is closer to his “culture” (yep, there are three dragon riders about – one is his brother, the other is dying.) than anyone else. I know that in “Eldest” Arya spends a lot time avoiding Eragon because she realises that he is attracted to her, but I think (judging from the prophecy) the relationship will go further than it has…
My theory is that Arya likes Eragon, is attracted to him, or thinks that she could easily fall in love with him if she let herself. Otherwise, she would be able to dismiss him and his affections on their grounds of their age different (well, she is only 83 years older. That’s a heck of a lot better than Arwen/Aragorn’s 2777 age difference, and anyway, since he’s a dragon rider he’ll be living for a long, long time) and not let it worry her.
That she’s letting it worry her gives some of her own emotional state. It’s obvious why she would oppose such a relationship because of their race difference, age, and since she’s an elf princess, it really wouldn’t be the smartest diplomatically approved move... So why is she afraid?

I think I've given that theory too much thought... *shuts up*

Why wouldn't it be? A dragon rider is one of the most highly considered...well, not a job, but an office, more like. I would think the Elves would consider it a pretty smart match. That's just me, of course.
At least we kinda know Arya and Eragon will get together eventually... (maybe. kinda sorta not really but STILL)

I don't think the Elves would approve because they'd think she was worth something better. And because of the age difference... and probably because they're still not 100% sure where Eragon's alliances lie - Eragon himself isn't... and that's something that he has to discover for himself.

I just finished Eldest...*phew*
That was one good book. It took me over a month because I read the first half in hour long book store visits. I actually skimmed some of the parts with Eragon and Saphira because I thought the parts centered around Roran and Carvahall were much more interesting. I really loved watching the story unfold back home. Roran is high on my favorite characters list...it was awful when he lost Katrina. :(
I really loved how when he and Eragon first meet again, Roran's first reaction is to punch him in the face. That's probably what I would've done.
I enjoyed watching Eragon mature..his transformation came as a bit of a shock, but I adjusted after a few chapters.
Personally, I find the idea of Eragon and Arya being together pretty much appalling. They just don't seem right for each other. But oh well. Not my decision.
Lastly, I'd made an offhand guess that Eragon and Murtagh were brothers. But the idea of Murtagh betraying him, even by force, that's just awful. I love Murtagh...I hope he manages to redeem himself by the end. If not, I hope Eragon kills him. If someone has to kill him, it should be Eragon, and I'm sure it has to be.

Yay! I just finished Eldest! And all I have to say is: Wow.
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
It was really interesting. Even though I knew there was something that had to be between Eragon and Murtagh, I was still shocked. I don't really know why. Murtagh is by far one of my favourite characters. He's just so tragic and hopeless - but I guess it has to be. But, it was still depressing when he decided to stick with the "dark side" so to speak. Ha ha ha. King Orrin. Ah, what can I say. A spontaneous chemist. A man after my own heart. I just have to say, he pretty much rocked because he was so RANDOM. :-D Ha ha ha. Yay for Eldest! It was amazing! I praise Chris for his writing! It has definately matured! Yay! Can't wait for numero tres!
