I don't know, I haven't finished 'em all yet. I'm sort of procrastinating on number 7 because I don't want the series to end! And i'm read Narnia right now.

Does this thread still live?
*determinedly revives thread*
Anyway, I've often passed by The Dark Tower books in the store and got slightly annoyed that the the cover clearly is made to look similar to the LotR trilogy, but then I slowly got more interested in them.
I was wondering if anyone had read them and could tell me about them. What genre are they, what are the plots etc.
I have never read Stephen King.

OOH OOH OOH! I love The Dark Tower series. I finished the final book a while back, and I'm rereading the Gunslinger now. Eddie is defintely my favorite character, and he proves it in the final book.
And I guess I'll answer your questions, though I'm not really good with words.
Stephen King takes all sorts of genres and puts them all together in this series. The Dark tower takes Sci-fi, Thriller, Fantasy, and a bit of western and all throws them into one.
The first book, the Gunslinger, tells of the final gunslinger Roland, in a world that's moved on. Roland is chasing after the man in black, a wizard named Walter. On the way, Roland meets with the boy Jake, who's from another world, from a city called New York, circa 1980s.
In the later books, Roland meets Eddie, a drug addict from Jake's world and time, and Odetta Holmes, a cripple, and her alternate personality, Detta Walker circa New York 1960s. Together, they (with Jake's pet billy-bumbler Oy) travel through different times and worlds to find the Dark Tower, to save Roland's world, and quite possibly all the worlds, including their own.

I've only read the first Dark Tower book but I didn't really enjoy it. I think I was expecting something more LotRish or at least more like fantasy and so was quite disapointed.
I think also the world they were in seemed too far too bleak and depressing for me and it seemed pretty wierd. I have heard that the books get better as they go on though.

The first one was totally different from all of the other books. Something happened in between those two books that completely changed the writing style.

Thank you Tar-Vanimelde... err interesting... most interesting... I might have a closer look at them one day, but as for now I'm buried in readings for school. Unfortunately I don't have time for pleasure reading at the moment *cries*

Do you think I should still give the 2nd one a try even if I hated the first one then?

Most defintely Elanor. I hated the first one too.
And you're very welcome Eä. It sounds really funky, but read it anyway.

*nodnod* They're added to my mental list of Books I Need to Read Some Day Somehow. Nice to have something to look forward to when the time comes when I will have all the time in the world, I will buy my own island in the sun with nothing but a hammock and a pool, cool drinks and my own privat library.
