OK...I've never heard any metal other than 80's hair metal...and this seems like a good place to ask these questions:
What is Viking metal?
What is Folk metal?
If one of you metalers could answer those, that'd be fantastic.

w000t Melkor. That is a fantastic line up. I've seen Nevermore and they PWN live. I love love love Warrels voice and Jeff Loomis is a guitar GOD!
In Flames I like a lot too. Just got there new album, Come Clarity, this week. Very good stuff there.
I know the name Evergrey, haven't heard anything by them though.
Larien: Viking Metal is essentially bands that use the imagery and I guess other people would say "myths" of the Vikings. Amon Amarth are probably the best of that sub-genre.
Folk Metal is just that...folk music combined with Metal. It is similar to Viking metal in a lot of ways. Finntroll and Korpiklaani are just 2 examples of Folk Metal.
Hope that was helpful.

POWER/SYMPHONIC METAL ROCKS !!!
I just love this gender of music. What I,ve been listening to the most lately is Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards, Rhapsody (aren't they great?! ) and Nightwish. I'm fairly new to Metal (I used to be satisfied with mainstream rock no so long ago ), but I hope to get to know more bands soon.

My two friends are in a metal band... One is a drummed and another plays bass guitar... I went to see them perform yesterday... they are quite good for beginners...
And I like CoF!

I agree with Erethror, Linwe. Excellent bands you listed.
Some suggestions along the same lines:
Kamelot, Turisas, Lost Horizon, Dream Evil, Sinergy, Tarot...having a brain fart here so I've went blank sorry. But that's a good starting point.

Well I've got a friend in a metal band. They're death/black metal. Their probably influenced by Slayer + Dimmu Borgir (and most likely other thrash/death/black metal bands) taken from what I know my friend listens to. They actually played Raining Blood at the last Battle of the Bands at school, where they got second place (it was amazing, they started a mash, but the music teacher broke it up!). This years they won!! They got a day (or something like that) of recording at a studio. So they might be coming out with a demo.
Their line-up change this year, though. Last year it was four members. This year, it was three (the one guitarist became the new singer, and the old singer became the drummer; my friend remained the guitarist). So...yeah. They're excellent, I'll ask my friend if I could get a sample, which I'll get up.

INDEED! I was overjoyed when they won! The biggest score ever!
The irony was that greece gave Lordi 12 points when 3 greek organizations accused Lordi of satanisim
This proves one thing: The best music the we finns do is rock/metal

LOL I know I'm completely hooked on them now. I can't stop listening to Hard Rock Hallelujah.
I want to move to Finland.

I'm serious. I used to want to live in Norway (ancestoral thing) or Sweden. But lately I feel myself being more and more drawn to Finland.
