The Only quotes I know of are in LOTR and neither are conclusive.
I am glad someone has found more convincing proof.

just because somethnig has wings doesn't mean it can fly! i mean look at ostriches and penguins they have wings. anyway, yes i think balrogs have wings. the maiar took on the most horrible shape they could, right? so, how how scray is a fiery giant without wings? i mean really.

If one thinks about it, the weight of a Balrog must be quite alot (I'm talking tonnage here). Now, birds must be light to fly, which is why most birds that can fly are small, thin, and/or have those hollowed out bones (which aren't bones). Not even pre-historic birds, I think, weighed in the tons. A Balrog would therefore have to be packing mucho steroids and be able to flap their wings at hummingbird speed! Or, he'd use magic to fly, physically-not very likely in the world of Tolkien. But, then, he could make powerful wingstrokes, without rapidly flapping them... But, then again, we've no proof Dragons ever existed...yet!

I think it's pretty clear that Balrogs have wings. The fact that it didn't use them for flying doesn't mean much. There's birds around that have wings, but they don't fly.

Like I said before, I don't deny they have wings-it says it in the book (FotR)-and I think you're right. I was just trying to explain how they wouldn't be able to, or it'd be hard to, fly.

Its true that they have wings, and almost certainly true that they can'y use them to fly. The bolrogs been around for some 1000 odd years. He's been living with those wings for a while, and he'd know if he could fly or not. And since he fell into a deep casm, and didn't fly out, its safe to asume that he can't use them.

This topic is a lot like the age old question..."Which came first, the chicken or the egg, or should they do away with the Lincoln penny"?
My own opinion is they have wings, but they are not used other then balance. But that's me.

Can you quote this directly? If so then there is no need for the debate.
Dumanyu - Which came first? The chicken. Why? Becuase the chicken can evolve from another animal, an egg cannot.

I have to say, I've never heard an arguement for the chicken question posed that way. That was good!!

I like the way your thinking about the chicken Lord of all.
Regards such creature ... the thing that Balrogs may have had wings but didn't fly leads to the discussion that is the same with Penguins and Ostriches... both have wings, but they can't fly ... heh lol

I can't believe this is still an actual discussion
I am convinced that Balrogs can change shape. They are Maiar creatures. Maiar can change shape. So Balrogs could be winged if that wanted to be winged.
This was my simple argument for voting yes.. but if maybe was an option, I would have chosen it.
