It sounds to me like an episode of Monk, but that's really all the murder mysteries I have experience with.

Okay, at the end of the night before I go to bed, I'll give a small hint.
Right now all you have to go off is the description.
A painter has an affair with a wife of a rather grumpy old man. They decide to murder them and trick everyone by admitting they did it and place perfect clues to suggest they didn't. However, an old lady inspects all the clues and finds out they did in fact did it but set it up so that when they confessed, they would be cleared and therefore, out of the clear.

So this painter and the wife who are having an affair kill the wife's husband, right? Then they admit they did it, but set up clues which suggest they actually didn't murder the husband? However, an old lady inspects the clues and somehow figures out that the painter and the wife did kill the man, confessed they did, but then tried to cover it up with clues suggesting they didn't actually do it?
Well... that was a lot of questions and a very confusing story.

Which is by Agatha Christie...
Plot Summary: In St. Mary Mead, no one is more despised than Colonel Protheroe. Even the local vicar has said that killing him would be doing a service to the townsfolk. So when Protheroe is found murdered in the same vicar's study, and two different people confess to the crime, it is time for the elderly spinster Jane Marple to exercise her detective abilities. At the end, she finds that the two people who confessed were, indeed, the real murderers and simply wanted to evade suspicion. Mrs. Anne Protheroe, wife of the deceased, and Lawrence Redding, her lover, have committed the crime.

Oh, that's absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, I haven't read any Agatha Christie, so I would've never guessed.

Read the bloody book and last week I watched the bloody episode on video. I shall never live that one down.
damn
^ It doesn't need to relate to the murder of Saffron, it was just a little contest for us I think.

Yes! It's Murder at the Vicarage, so well.... Nurrantiel obviously gets the second exemption. I may have three exemptions, but that may be overkill. I have to save other "challenges" for exemptions for the other 2 guesses (because the last, no one's allowed to be exempt!).
I would've thought the Brits would've known that one though. I saw the episode the other day with Geraldine McEwan who makes a fantastic Miss Marple! I'd like to see a mystery where Poirot and her team up.

Oh, I didn't know it was a contest, now I feel ridiculous...

I am really ashamed of myself. I've seen both the Joan Hickson and the more modern episodes and I cannot believe I didn't get that.

*pats JF* Well, at least you're not being hung for being a terrible Brit. I don't know how I can call myself one if I haven't read Agatha Christie.

Nurrantiel was the first to name it? Um... or at least according to the posts?

Yeah, it was the "little old lady" thing that did it for me. I was like, "Oh, Miss Marple! That would be why it sounds familiar." I love Agatha Christie so I was wracking my brain for the right one.

I adore that episode, and it's the only episode I've truly seen of the series with Geraldine McEwan. I fell in love with the coupling of Griselda and the Vicar, and so I really want to read the story, JUST for them and the stories they appear in...
Before... um.... [spoiler]
The vicar dies in one of the them. [sad]
