Welcome Numa... we're glad to have you! :-)

I'm following the election on a selection of about 4-5 channals, three local and two international ones. Don't worry, I'll burn out long before it's over.
Okay, so I just heard that you Americans have to vote for like a thousand things, not just for the president. What else do you need to vote for - and why?

Well, the ballot questions vary by state. I don't know what other states are doing for their, but in my state, we had to vote yes or no whether to eliminate the state tax, change the law on marijuana possesion, and another was to put an end to dog racing.

Like... what????
So they basically throw everything in? Is it so difficult to get people to vote so they need to gather everything and have people to vote on EVERYTHING in th world every four years??? No wonder, people rather stay at home instead of having their brain blown away by the thousand things they have to have an opinion on...!!!!

Okay:

National level politicians:

President
Senators (not all states have senators running in the election)
Representatives

State level politicians:

Governor (not all states have a gubernatorial race at this time)
Senators
Representatives
Attorneys

Local level politicians:

These are the city/county politicians... I'm not sure what all the positions are.

On our (my) local ballot are school bond proposals, because the school district wants more money, which means taxes must be raised. The signs that say "vote against school bonds" are kind of stupid, imo. Our city is growing pretty rapidly, and the district needs money to repair and make upgrades to existing schools, build new schools, etc.

It's not something to be proud of, but I'm not the most educated voter. I knew what I was doing in voting for the president/national level senators/representatives, but the more local area people... I voted party line. They don't affect me personally enough to really care.

Thanks for explaining.... it still seems like .. a lot to figure out. I also heard that American voters take like four or five times the time in the polling booth compared to voters here - simply because they have so many things to vote for. That's insane, no wonder, you guys have to wait for hours in line!

It's 2 am here and I'm still up... I'm rather bored now... and I should probably get some sleep now, since nothing new is going to happen now anyway...

When you wake up, the election should pretty much be decided :)

Well, not all the ballots are that complicated. (I think big states with heavy populations and those who are more libral have more things to vote on)

I only had 4 state questions and then the guys who were running for office as listed above. So it was prety easy for me. (if you can understand "political speach")

But yeah... I agree it does add to it the crazyness of it all. I think you hit the nail on the head though Ea... I don't think people would vote on those things at all if they didn't trhow it in during this time of yeaer! (which is really sad by the way)

Eäryendë:: I just wish I could sleep, right now I'm too excited... quite silly, really... no offense you you guys, but it's not even my election! ;-)

Jax:: Does it mean you don't get anything decided in those four years between a presidential election...? Because people don't show up at to vote except for presidential elections? lol

Well, if you consider what a struggle it is to get to people to come to the political election, probably the most important and certainly the most hyped up, how much more impossible would it be to get them to come together again and vote for other things! That's probably why they throw everything on one ballot. We didn't have too much to decide over.

President
1 Senator
1 National Representative
1 State Representative
Whether or not to have a new state constitutional convention
if we should retain judges
state officials (attorney, clerk, etc.)

Haha I don't vote in the other elections. I voted for the last election that included a national representative/senator, but I don't vote in the local elections. I don't care, to be frank.

Then again, there haven't been many elections since I actually turned 18.

Ea: There are other ellections but most of them are thrown in with the presidential election. A lot of the other elections are things like Board of school directors, local things like that and such. but it seems like there is an "election season" if you will where most people running for office are running at the same time.

There are other things inbetween presidential ellections however. (not sure all what they are because this is my first time voting so far)

I didn't pay really any attention to the Senators Representatives. Being a first time voter. I think just voting for my first president was a lot to pay attention to. I'm going to be honest, I don't like being attention to any of this stuff but it's your duty to your country to vote so it's there I do pay attention and vote, especially when it comes to your country's president.

.....and there is screaming and dancing in the streets. I am the only sane person left on campus, it's official.

No no, I'm happy for them and him. I guess I'm just not a die-hard supporter.

I'm almost bouncing off the walls, but... on second thought, if I was around the huge crowds, I'd probably be screaming and dancing also.

I voted for the first time today, and my state is still undecided, but Obama is President and I am content... I saw both sides, and they both had their strengths and weaknesses, but in the end I choose to vote Change

McCain's speech was wonderful by the way. I always feel so much pride when they talk so highly of their opponent... either way... so yea
