Congratulations to the Americans on your new president. I hope he will do a good job for you - and for the world. :-)
I still have to see McCain's and Obama's speeches, hopefully they'll repeat them on the news here.

I feel like there's finally hope for the country, a hope that hasn't been present for several years. All my republican friends/acquaintances keep going on about how the country is going to go to hell in a handbasket, and how Obama is two clicks short of evil incarnate, and how they're going to leave the country, etc... I think it's rather ridiculous.

Obama's term might not be perfect, or even all that great, but it will be a change from the status quo, and we need change. I know Obama isn't perfect, and that he will make mistakes, but in my opinion, McCain is too much like Bush, especially in his foreign policy. The differences in the terms (had McCain won) would've been too similar (or rather, there wouldn't be many differences), and since Bush's time in office (more specifically the last 4 years) has been an almost unequivocal disaster, to keep going in that direction by electing McCain would be... terrifying.

So I'm happy with the way things turned out. Maybe the democrats can get some things done that will benefit the country, at long last.

Sorry 'bout breaking the no-politics rule...

Granted Mcain is like bush in a lot of ways and bush made a lot of mistakes but as you said about Obama... he is human.
In this election (either way you vote) it was choosing the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

Well yesterday and last night was epic. And just downright overwhelmingly unbelievable.

I voted in my first presidential election. And I was just ecstactic walking out of my polling place. :P

I was bouncing around and cheering and crying when the news that he was projected the president elect. :D There was cheering and crying and hugging and bouncing and screaming and honking and impromptu parades of pure happiness.

It's so hard to explain how I feel right now. I've been a crazy radical hippie environmentalist liberal all my life, but not political until after Bush was elected. I've been fighting against the Bush administration and the damaged they've caused since the invasion of Iraq. Most of my life (politically speaking) has been full of despair and frustration. I honestly couldn't see any hope for the country or the world if things weren't changed drastically for the better. 2000 was heartbreaking (even though I was 13 at the time, and politics wasn't exactly on the top of my list ;)), and 2004 was just devastating. By then I'd been against the war from the get go, working by ass off to try and get people to get educated on the issues and get out and vote. (I was unfortunately too young to vote in that election by about 8 months) I'll never forget that feeling of defeat. A loss of EVERYTHING I'd worked so hard for. Then 2006 rolls around and I was more involved and engaged in campaigning for a new democratic senator for my state of Montana. We didn't know until the day after the election that our hard fought battle paid off. (Montana's win was the actual tipping of the scale in the Senate, NOT Virginia)

What's interesting is that now, I honestly can't stop smiling. It's like this weight of stress and frustration has been lifted off my shoulders because now there is just this GLIMMER of hope. And damn, is it burning ever so brightly in the distance.

I'm so proud of what Barack has accomplished and how it was SUCH a grassroots win. For the people BY the people. I'm so proud of my generation for proving people wrong when they told us we were lazy and not engaged. It's the other way around now.

We need this change. And I'm hopeful that things will really get set in motion. He has a lot of pressure riding on him because of EVERYTHING that is put before him. And yeah, he is human. And I don't think one person can handle all of this. Or make all the right decisions. But with the Congress in his favour in a major way, hopefully we've inspired bipartisan working among the representatives. And maybe, just maybe we can work together for once to fix things, change thing for the better. I honestly think, well maybe I'm just hoping, that that's the kind of attitude Barack and hopefully all the Democrats in Congress will bring to the table.

McCain fought hard. And I respect him for that. I don't have to respect his views, but his concession speech was very eloquent and very respectful. Something I think the rest of his party needs to take note of. I remember back in 2004, many Democrats were saying that if he had run as a Democrat, they would have voted for him. And I think that speech of his really reflected why they said that. So brava to him! I cannot and will not ever respect Sarah Palin though. She needs to be eaten by a polar bear. :P The prospect of her as VP (and possibly Prez) scared the living daylights out of me.

And while Montana is still a "red" state, the fact that it was "too close to call" until this morning means that things are changing here (50%-47%). I mean, come on. Our two senators are democrats, our governor is a democrat and we voted in so many democrats into the state legislature and other political positions, it's ridiculous. I adore my state. We cannot be defined by this red/blue crap. I'm a perfect example...I'm what most would consider a "liberal." But when other "liberals" (mostly from out of state) find out that I'm UBER pro-2nd amendment they are floored. :P

Anyway, I feel for the first time in a LONG time, a sense of hope. I am proud to be an American. (Okay, so I wasn't proud for only a little while...then I grew up and realized how stupid it was to say such a thing ;) :P) And I am honoured and just so proud to have witness and been a part of HISTORY IN THE MAKING.

 MB... eaten by a polar bear... wouldn't mind that. Yeah, I thought of you when Obama was leading in Montana for a long while... I also thought of one of my mom's conservative cousins who teaches at MSU Bozeman.

Just once final question for Obama supporters...

he supports abortion AKA the murdering of innocent children... if you ha the chance would you kill the baby yourself? If no, then why elect someone who would?

That's all I'm saying on this issue before I start going across the poitical guidlines of the forum or start making people more mad at me. :P

So I went and got my license renewed today (because I won't be in town for my actual birthday), and I'm officially a registered voter now. Well, technically still couldn't vote until Friday, but since there's nothing more for quite a while...yeah. Come 2012, PotR is ready to go. :karate:

In other news, had my first wreck yesterday, and the stupid insurance company won't talk to me about it until they've spoken to my father and gotten his permission to speak to me because I'm still technically a legal minor. I finally just told the guy, "Look, I'll be an adult come Friday. Rather than jump through all these hoops, how about you just call me back then?" I understand the reasoning behind it, and I know they can't make exceptions, but it's rather frustrating. I seem to be just a few days too young to do much of anything right now. :P

(I also seem to be in a rush to get in all my fun experiences before I hit 18. In the past 3 weeks alone, I've had my first speeding ticket and my first wreck. Yeesh.)

Thanks Kit!!! *cheers*

I hope my little post wasn't out of bounds. I tried. It was more of just an emotional reaction to everything.

No answer to Jax's question though. NUH UH. Not because I don't have one, but because it's against the rules and ridiculous to get into what's apparently a one sided argument in which anyone with a different opinion can't win.

@Earyende: (Dude, I think I'm just gonna call you Ear from now on ;) :P) I was kind of freaking out (as were most of us) that Obama had such a big lead for SO long. But most are saying that's because most of the "urban" results were in first. And apparently the "rural" areas are more conservative republicans. I find it the word "urban" used in Montana quite amusing. :P Ha ha ha! When I think "urban" I think sprawling giant cities. I've never called any place in Montana a city. We only have towns.

Okay that was completely RANDOM. XD

HOW small a world is it that someone you're related to works in MONTANA??? :-o But Bozeman should burn to the ground. ESPECIALLY MSU. :yuck: There is just this air about it, they think they are better than everyone and don't care about anything. *headdesk* My friend actually had a full ride scholarship to MSU as an astrophysics major. Yeah, she had to keep a 4.0 gpa average...that wasn't a problem for her. She GAVE UP the FULL RIDE scholarship to leave MSU and came back to UM because she hated Bozeman and the people so much. :P Oh yeah. :P

EDIT:

@POTR: EXCITING!!! Wooooo! There are still plenty of elections you can be a part of. Local ones every year. And then midterm elections! So there'll be one in 2010. :P Sorry...I'm a political nut. ;)

And that's so crazy you got in a wreck! :-o Hope all is well! Stupid insurance companies need to be smacked. :P Welcome to being 18 though! Don't hurry too much. XD

LOL yeah he's an Ag professor... he worked in Oklahoma for... not sure how long, and then he came to Texas and worked at Texas State.... then he, his wife and three school age sons moved to Montana. I've only been through Bozeman once, and I wasn't really paying attention... it was on our trip to Yellowstone/Glacier. We had left Yellowstone and were on our way to Missoula for the night, and we stopped in Belgrade to visit with them. Their oldest son is in college now, and I'm not sure if he's going to UM or MSU. I wouldn't mind living in Montana... most of the time. Haha.

^I have no idea of what Eäryendë just said!!!

Do you guys only need to register as a voter one time??? Why the heck are so many people not registered then? Does it mean they have NEVER voted in any elections in their whole lives?
The American voting system and voting culture is truly... fascinating.. :P
Congratulation on register, potr.
I'm sorry to hear about your fun experiences but I can kind of see why they need to talk to your dad.. when you involve insurance companies they need to go by the book... :-)
I hope everything works out for you so you can have a happy birthday tomorrow!

On the Obama-issue-that-doesn't-touch-on-politics-at-all: I wasn't a Obama fan before... I might have been an Obama-supporter - out of 'habit' but after seeing the victory speech he gave (yay, for YouTube!) I'm convinced! I don't know if he can succed in putting his changes through and I don't know about his politics, but his gift as a public speaker and his charisma... *swoons and faints*
I even cried when I watched his speech on this tiny little YouTube window with bad sound quality... He was not talking about my country, my history or anything that concerns me... but wow, that man is [s]god[/s] good! :-)

I totally agree with you Eä. I heard a part of his speech on the radio while I was having breakfast.. wow.. I was really.. touched. That man has a real talent for speeching!

Oh and hi by the way :bye2:

@Ear (you shall forever be known as Ear :P): Ha ha ha ha! That's so nuts. :P How bizarre would it be if I'd met your sort of cousin?! XD Bozeman, the town itself isn't that bad. It's just the atmostphere of the people that annoy the heck out of me. :yuck:

And you should come back to Montana. If for nothing else, MOI. ;) And Missoula is MUCH better than the Bozeman area. ;) *cough*

@Zany: I can't even begin to explain the reasoning behind some people. :P When you turn 18, you get to register to vote. I mean, if you move you have to re-register if you want to vote where you currently reside. WHYYYY so many people won't register is BEYOND me. :duh: I was so excited to get registered when I turned 18, it was a little ridiculous. :P I kind of wish we had what some countries have which is like mandatory voting or whatever it's called. I think they have it in Austrailia.

But it's just the American way I guess. I honestly can't really answer your question because I don't know it myself. It's so stupid why people won't do it. A woman I work with thinks that her vote won't matter, same with my cousin (although she also argues that she doesn't want to get called for jury duty *rolls eyes*). So they won't register. What's ironic, is that every vote DOES matter...even though the Presidential election is tricky when it comes to that. ;) *coughAlGorecough* Hopefully this election, with SUCH a huge amount of people registering and voting, will change peoples minds. And maybe my CONSTANT nagging will too. ;)

Our whole system is bizarre. I'm a political science student (albeit one that studies international relations and not American politics) and I don't understand it all. Although, I strangely (;)) have no problems with the electoral college after this election. HMMMM. I wonder why...:)

As for Obama...well I wasn't a supporter until after the Montana primary in June (I voted for Hillary). I had actually planned on voting for John Edwards, then he dropped out. And then I considered just writing in Al Gore because he just pwns the world. And then I ended up voting for Hillary because I'm a frakking feminist god damn it. :P Kind of built in my genes.

He is one of the most eloquent and amazing speakers I've ever heard. His speech Tuesday night I think brought a lot of people, if not most, to tears. Including me. Of course ANYONE is better than Bush. ;) Did I just say that?? But yeah, he's just amazing. I'm SOOO glad you got to see his speech Zany! I knew you'd enjoy it. :P

MB: Yeah, if you ever meet somebody with the last name of Igo, they are most likely a relative of mine. The oldest one (his name is Caleb) goes to MSU Bozeman. Facebook is great.

I've always wanted to live in/near the mountains. It's great.
