You MoB, you crazy!!! :P
Alright, I get it.. register and it's for life and some people think 1) it takes a lot of work to register and put it off and 2) other people don't want to be registered for the rest of their lives, it's too overwhelming - and the FBI can trace you!
Oh wait... Zany...? You're talking to me? Or what did I miss? :teehee:

And another thing MoB.. I'm going to raise my right forefinger and shake it in the traditional be-careful-young-lady-gesture. I dragged this thread up from the depth of the forum... on my shoulders... I put hard work into nursing it back to life and prosperity getting up every hour of the night to feed it. And look how it thrives now with new members and an actual conversation going. Now please, dear MoB, please don't scare people away again by line-dancing on the border of politics talk! You know I'd be more than happy to share everything with you on msn, darling.

Yay!! happy birthday potr :D That's awesomeness though very annoying about missing the election.

Election wise I was at a mountain film festival show on the Tuesday night and they announced the result half way through that and everyone started cheering and clapping , it was awesome. I was amazed though how quickly we got a result, I've followed lots of elections obsesivly and it always seems to take forever and ever. The last Scottish one took ages.

Well then you shouldn't come to this little country I live in.. The Election results are in quite quick, the same night of the Election day.

But then it still takes the winning party half a year to form a cabinet :confused2:

*sighs*

All I'll say about Obama's speaches is that it makes me sick just to hear his voice. *holds back the puke*

Ea: Your response to Obama is one of the main reasons I don't like him. Any man who people start ralying around as a god or messiah as they call him or even better than other men.... he isn't to be trusted.

Yeah.. I better end here before I get on about the evils of socialism and how it's ruined other countries and how were heading down the same road..... O_o oops to late. see ya. *waves*

It's thanks to the evils of Socialism that my country even became a welfare state. It's thanks to the evils of Socialism that we have free schooling (day care/preschool to university). It's thanks to the evils of Socialism that parents, students, unemployed and disabled people receive monthly benefits/contributions. Oh yes, things of evil indeed!

I would have jumped about in sheer joy when Obama was declared the winner but I don't think the other residents of my apartment building would have appreciated it at 6:00 AM, lol.

His speech was of pure WIN! I got chills and almost a little teary. I have a feeling he will do great things for America and the world! :)

Oh and a HUGE (albeit belated) Happy Birthday and Welcome to potr! :D

I know some people who just took a trip to a socialist country.

You know what the people said? They said "We don't understand you Americans at all! Why on earth would you want socialism after you have seen what we have been through with it here?"
They were shocked.

If I work 10 hours and earn 100 dolars that is my money. No one else has the right to come take it from me and give it to someone else simply because that somoen else isn't willing to work as hard as I am.
They tried that in Jamestown and the people started dying because as long as you can get something for nothing from the people who do all the work you have no reason to work.
Then pretty soon the people who do work get tired of having their hard earned money taken away from them so they grow weary and stop working. Pretty son no one works and everyone lives in poverty.

Look at the history books. This is fact I'm talking about here.

Well I haven't been here in a long while. I haven't been anywhere much really. Weaning myself away from the computer I think.

Well... I think personally Obama is possibly too good to be true... but eh, he can't be any worse than some people. I just hope he survives to be President. If anyone in power is going to get shot, it will be a President of America. Just look at all the evil dictators that have ruled and lived to old age, and no-one has done anything to them. *tut*

I've never voted for anything ever. No-one in my family has done for years. It's all too confusing and boring to try and understand what party does what for which and for whom. And if you are uninformed, you may make a huge mistake by just going for anyone, so it's best not to vote at all.

If I ever do though, it won't be for the British National Party as they are basically Nazi's, saying the only people in Britain should be white and all that crap.

The kind of Socialism you speak of is the Communist/dictatorship kind. The kind that was the reason for the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union. Not all Socialism is Communism. Not all Socialism leads to dictatorship. And not even in America do you get to keep that 100 dollars for 10 hours of work. You have taxes too, remember.

It's not about people being lazy. It's about making sure ALL your fellow citizens are cared for should they need it. A single parent could be struggling working 3 different jobs and still not making ends meet. Why should he or she be left behind? What's so bad about everyone chipping in and making society better and more livable for everyone? It doesn't have to be every man for himself.

Unfortunately though, some people do cheat with the benefits that the country allows. If you claim you have a severe back problem and can't work, there is really nothing much anyone can do to prove that it is or it isn't.

My brother claims benefit because he has been ill with chronic fatigue syndrome for a few years now. Last year was great fun, because he went for his yearly medical and then he later found out, out of 15 points he needed to say he couldn't work and yes he as ill, he got something like 3. So we appealed, and while we were appealing, he had his benefit stopped. But we won it in the end, and the doctor was in the wrong. This year, guess what? Same doctor on the medical council, but this time he had completely changed his tune. Last year he said my brother would be well again in 6 months, but he conceded one year later it would take a long time.

And the forms he has to fill in every year. Gah. It makes me so angry when people like my brother can't work because of their condition - if we go out for a day, he has to prepare himself the day beforehand, and then he'll just sleep for HOURS afterwards - and yet so many people do take benfits from the needy.

But what can you do? There are scum and crooks everywhere.

When I took French, we learned a little about the way the government works, and apparently it's fairly similar throughout Europe. The taxes might be higher, but you get support when you need it. I don't think it'll ever go that far here in the US, but it's something we could wish a little for.

Socialism (and Marxism, Communism) have a negative connotation here in the US. And there's a lot of people calling Obama a socialist, and I don't think half of them (or more) even know what it really is. And Socialism /= Communism. If you look at the USSR or Communist China, you'll see what that's like, and even with the change Obama wants, it'll never go that far.

Happy belated birthday, PotR!

The US is not a Socialist country and it never will be, mainly due to the political history. No country in Europe is true Socialist either, we're all influenced by market economy and capitalism - and we embrace it in a modern day society in acknowledgement of the world economic processes.
Communism is dead and might only exist in North Korea in some local form.

The discussion on either one will quickly and inevitably touch too much on politics and ideological viewpoints. I'd be happy to clarify or offer my own elaborated standpoint over PM. :-)

potr, how did you celebrate your sweet 18? I think we talked about it before, but I still find it interesting that 18 is something over there, all you get is legal age, but if there isn't an election or you get into a car accident you won't feel it. Here you get to drive when you're 18. But the US legal driving age is 16 and you can drink legally before you turn 21, so the 18 is just... in between!? :teehee:

Well, I had to get to school an hour early to work on an essay, so I did that and went throughout my morning pretty much like I always do. Then at lunch my mom signed me out, and we drove down to Baylor University for an event that I was invited to. Listened to speakers, had dinner, got to talk to some of the professors over dessert and coffee. Then all the students went back to the honors dorm, hung out for a few hours (watched Transformers on a huge projector screen :teehee:), went to our host rooms to sleep on the concrete floor all night.

So really, I didn't do all that much specifically for my birthday (despite my mother's repeated attempts to get people to sing to me or somesuch nonsense), but I had fun. I love Baylor (s'where I'll be going to school come fall), so I enjoyed myself.

In terms of what I can now do at 18....hmm. Well, I can have my own bank account, buy a house, own a gun, vote, be prosecuted as a legal adult, drive a rental car, buy tobacco products, rent an apartment, have my own account at Blockbuster, get a credit card, pay taxes, receive rebate checks, get called for jury duty, gamble, go into certain bars and clubs (though not drink), and get married. Probably more, but that's all that I can list off the top of my head. :P

You're a legal adult when you turn 18... which means you can buy cigarettes/tobacco, nudie mags, etc, and you're also basically responsible for your own behavior. If you get in trouble, you don't go to juvie... you go to the big house. Haha!

The legal drinking age here is 21. Of course, that doesn't stop a lot of underage people (esp. college students and high school kids that like to drink). But if you get caught drinking when you're underage (or if you're an adult and you're hosting a party where alcohol is being served to minors... you're just asking for trouble.

PotR: Where (in TX?) do you live? You're going to Baylor? Hope you have a good time there, I have a couple of friends from church that go there, and one of them is graduating next month.

You may not think Obama will take it that far, but apparently you havn not done to much research yourself.

His votes leaned towards socialism. (and yes I do know what socialism is)

(((a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

(in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.))))

I got those from a dictionary so there is no arguing with them.... ^

Obama is anti-america, andt-christian, and anti-constitution. Socialist countries are calling him socialist. (you would think they would know)

Granted (as stated before) if a single mother is working 3 jobs and can't provide for her kids then she needs help and it is our duty to help her BUT it is absalutely not the governments duty to help her.
We the people are the ones that should be doing that not the government. That is what the original constitution says. And the government's way of doing that is so corrupt and full of wholes that you couldn't hold a pint of water in it even if it were as big as the mississippy river!
