I agree!!
As I see it, I don't like the conservatives mostly because of what they did to the miners in the 80's. My Grandad was a miner in those days, and he never had a good word to say about Thatcher. Same old Tory, same old story is my opinion. Cameron isnt a people's man, despite what the stupid, puffed up git tries to make himself out as.

yeah, i don't have any immediate connections to the miners, but i'm still well and truly on their side. i think it's awful the way thatcher destroyed so many communties.
on a different note, i watched the british film notes on a scandal yesterday, and i thought it was really interesting how the idea of class got dragged into it, despite not being integral to the story. i've commented before on the extent to which class is a factor in a lot of british films and comedy, but this prompted me to think about the whole issue again. a lot of people try to say that class doesn't matter anymore, but i think that the fact that class issues are still so prevalent in film and television is a sign that ideas of class are still firmly rooted in the british social conscience. what do you guys reckon?
((i don't have time right now to give any examples of the importance of class to british film and tv, but if anyone's interested, let me know and i'll quite happily write something later))

I'm 3/4 British XD May I join? I have this habit of saying "bloody hell" a lot and use "I'm British" for every imaginable excuse, lol. I also can pull a pretty convincing British accent.

I think, with regards to media, certainly, and I think there is still a slight mental impulse perhaps to keep the class system but for myself, I dont really care for your "breeding" or how you speak, its about you as a person, and how you live life.
I think you are still right, its still knocking about Ethelfleda.

@miluiel - welcome to the the british society!
i feel i should point out that my last post was simply a comment on the fact that the class system still exists, rather than an endorsement of it. i have been on the receiving end of class prejudice (i'm from a working class background, and have been made to feel inferior because of it) and that's enough to put me off the class system for life.
i can see why some people want to hang onto it - it allows the upper and middle classes to feel superior, and gives the working class a sense of solidarity against those above them on the social ladder (as the miners in billy elliot: the musical sing, "we're proud to be working class / solidarity forever") - but i think we'd be better off without it, as individuals and as a society. i'll admit that i find that sense of solidarity appealing, but i think there are better ways of creating it. personally, i'm all for social equality and giving everyone the same opportunities no matter how wealthy they are.
the class system has existed since time immemorial, so it will be a long time before we shake it off completely, but it's become increasingly redundant as we live in a more socially mobile society, so i reckon its days are probably numbered.

Hey guys just a wee reminder, after looking at the posts on the previous page, that all talk about politics is against our forum rules.

I was wondering how long it would take for a mod to stray into this club and berate us for it :P:P:P:P

Aye, you're right. I haven't been here for a while so I didn't notice it. Sorry about that.
I'm sure there is something much more interesting to be discussing than politics anyway.
Welcome to the club Miluiel Evenstar!

^Ah, I wouldn't take it too seriously. Remember Y2K? Remember lemmings jumping off of cliffs during overpopulation? I wouldn't worry about that too much. We all have to die some time, right? All I'm trying to say is that there's always someone with another Doom's Day thing.
Besides, with modern medicine, there should be something that they can come up with.

Aye, please don't worry too much about it dearie. There was a big scare about it a while back, remember? Everyone was saying how it was going to become a pandemic, yet it never did. I mean, it may still be working up to that, but I don't think we should worry. Doctors are working on cures and such as we speak and vaccines can only get better.

^I know. It's a market ploy. People will be more interested in reading for updates, hence giving them buisness. And I swear, all media people are drama queens/kings, which is rich coming from a future journalist, XD If it's not bird flu it'll be global warming, and if it's not global warming, it'll be Andromeda crashing into Earth, or radiation or something. *chuckle* Just don't fear the inevitable. The sooner you accept the inevitable, the sooner you can keep living.
Well I'm glad that you'll sleep better, XD
