*drops in from the ceiling*

i was definitely concerned about the werewolves until i saw the trailer...meyer's imagery was clear that they were not supposed to be all scary-like *cough underworld cough* and it appears that they're exactly right.
and helloooooo, taylor lautner's abs? love. :P

OH HEY GUESS WHAT.
officially the release date is november 20th (here in the states, anyhow) and i was all worried, cause i'm going to be in france from september until around christmastime....and the first movie didn't get released until JANUARY there.

buuuuut...

turns out france actually gets it two days before everyone else! *evil cackle*...so i get to see it in FRANCE with frenchie twilighters! :-D

here's the thing: i don't know if it will be subbed or dubbed, and i don't know how to find this out. i would much prefer subbing because 1. english is my first language, 2. i like their voices and 3. i don't want to miss anything. i'm pretty fluent in french, but still...

I thought Twilight was a joke. One of the worst movies in the history of time. Not to mention the fact that Stephenie Meyer has completely butchered Vampire Mythology and Folklore.

I definitely plan on seeing New Moon. Only so I can laugh at it all.

I agree. Completely.

Vampires used to be, well, killers. They were mean, they were nasty, and they were scary. One of the first vampires in the history of screen was Count Orlok and well, no one wanted him stalking you or cuddling with you. Especially since he looked like this.

Image

This scene just scared the living crap out of me.

Image

If someone told me he was a vampire, I would definitely believe him.

Now compare him to this guy....

Image

Yeah not really scary. Okay granted, Orlok was someone that you feared and Edward was designed mainly to be loved but really....aside from being freakishly pale, he doesn't strike as a vampire to me. At least the traditional folklore vampires. He even lacks the elegant grace and charm of Count Dracula. My have the vampires fallen.

End of rant for me.

@Eru: I'm assuming you've seen "Let the Right One In"? I've heard many wonderful things about that movie and have been trying to watch it.

Exactly! The Twilight "vampires" lack EVERYTHING that the traditional Folklore/Mythology Vampires have. They don't have fangs, they're not nocturnal, they can stay out in the sunlight and oh that's when the SPARKLE! Yeah, please just let me barf.

If Stephenie Meyers would have chosen to call them 'immortal' or something of the sort, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But those things are NOT Vampires.

And Caunion, YES I've seen "Let The Right One In". It's SO many kinds of awesome it's not even funny. Definitely see it! And see it before the American remake comes out (that most likely will ruin everything the original novel and film are about)! You can watch it online if you don't like downloading.

just wanted to point out 2 things...

1. stephenie meyer made it clear that she made her own vampire mythology and didn't read other vampire stuff before she wrote the twilight saga. there is something to be said for basing it in actual folklore, yes, but she tried to make her own sort of world...
2. i was under the impression that this thread was for discussion of the upcoming film, the trailer, new moon in general...not twilight-bashing. i can respect different opinions (being that i'm not one of those "OMG lyk twilight is tHe BeSt ThInG eVaR HOW COULD YOU INSULT IT" fans) but i'm not sure this is the thread to do it in...

1. But why have them be Vampires when they're not? It's like writing a story about Unicorns but have them without horns. They'd just be horses but you still insist on calling them Unicorns. Or writing a story about Trolls. But you decided to make them look like little pixies and make them have wings and live up in little tree houses and be kind to all humans and animals. The complete opposite of what the Folklore Troll is, but you'd still insist on having them be Trolls. It's pointless and frankly rather offensive to those who are diehard Folklore enthusiasts.

2. I'll keep my mouth shut about it if it makes everyone happy. But tell me, what thread would be appropriate to discuss Twilight in? The Alice in Wonderland thread?

Oh and please don't take the sarcasm personally. I'm just tired of the fact that negative opinions on certain fandoms aren't meant to be voiced here on A-U.

So I'm guessing that you're not a big fan of Tolkien as his Elves must be quite insulting to diehard Folklore enthusiasts, right?

Oh, and here's a crazy thing. If you don't like then nobody is forcing you to read or watch it are they?

Surprisingly, most Twilight fans do know the difference between the Twilight vampires and "proper" vampires! We're not as thick and stupid as you like to think we are. So quite frankly, I find it offensive that you seem to think that because a person likes a bit of escapism fantasy they're somehow unable to separate out a new folklore created entirely for the world the series is set in (a bit like Middle-earth really) from traditional folklore. It's down right insulting to our intelligence.

Seeing as Elves in particular are quite different depending on which culture's Folklore you're talking about, that's a void example. And Tolkien's Elves are related to the Elves of Scandinavian Folklore as well as the Norse Mythology. Tolkien borrowed many things from Scandinavian Folklore and Mythology. He did not change any of the creatures or races beyond recognition. He did not take away anything that was fundamental about them. And unlike Meyers, Tolkien knew exactly what he was dealing with.

What does force have to do with anything? Am I not allowed to have an opinion and voice it regardless of whether I saw the movie on my own free will or not?!

Please point me to where I said anything about Twilight fans being stupid, thick and having no intelligence? Please point me to where I said Twilight fans are unable to separate Folklore from Stephenie Meyer's fiction world? Yeah, thought so.

Wait...so this thread is only allowed for pro-Twilight? Here was me thinking this was a DISCUSSION board.
Ah well, I'd create an Anti-Twilight thread, but somehow I think that'd get removed in a heartbeat.

Yes. ♥

I wouldn't call her amateur work mythology. I find it most disturbing that she called her series a "saga".

Are you serious? And here I was thinking that you were pretty in-depth about Tolkien and his literature. You have no idea where he got his influences from, do you? I'm thinking you're one of those people who think that real elves are tiny little people who live in mushrooms. I am shocked.
I'm guessing that you are not a big fan of Tolkien, as you should have been aware of this detail.

Oh dear god, how I hate when people use this argument. Honey, if we don't read or watch something, then we have no call to judge whether or not it's good. Does that make sense to you or still no?

Nope, this is a Twilight discussion thread, not a Twilight fan thread.

Yes, I do actually know all about the Norse mythology behind Tolkien seeing as I'm planning on studying it at university, thank you very much.
What I was trying to get at was the fact that when the Lord of the Rings was first published, elves were generally considered to be little folk. To the average Joe Bloggs who had no knowledge of Norse mythology, Tolkien's Elves were nowhere near what was then perceived to be the norm on what elves were to the general public.
Words are words. Twilight is fantasy. Just as Tolkien is fantasy. Authors can call their creatures whatever the hell they like. They've created the world and it doesn't have to be the same as ours nor do the definition of creatures have to be the same.
It's all about context. You could never put a Twilight vampire into Dracula and call it a vampire, but then again you could never put a Tolkien Elf into Shakespeare and call it an elf, as the rules of each fantasy world are different.

I've started to try to read Twilight again, online of course like I'm giving Meyer any of my monies pfftt, and already one chapter in I already want to punch Bella's face in.
I shall persevere....maybe.

The whole story could've been so much better if Edward or Bella had died. The whole "happily ever after with my beautiful vampire boyfriend who never ages and will never die and my beautiful half vampire baby that I wasn't supposed to ever have" was so painfully ridiculous that I wanted to punch in the faces of all the characters and everyone associated.

Yeah, I've had enough of Twilight. All those rabid obsessed fangirls really, really need a hobby. And seriously, there are enough truly good books out there, there's no need to read Twilight "10 times in one month lol omg!!1!!1!1!ONE!11!e!"

i know very few people who actually like bella.
even i don't really like her, except for the whole clumsiness factor. it's funny, cause my mom and sister think that "kristen stewart really needs to get her act together" or something, but if a character isn't well-written anyways, how are you supposed to act better than the original written character? lulz.
all of the other supporting characters are vastly more interesting, to be sure..

I'm sure a sufficiently more talented actress could pull it off. But Kristen really doesn't add anything to the role, she just plays it as is, which is unfortunately very boring.

And definitely about the supporting characters. That was why I was so angry in Breaking Dawn when they all ran away. :annoyed2:
