Hello! My name is Ellamearil (pronounced Ell-LAH-meh-rell); Ella for short.
As you may know, I absolutely OBSESS over anything that has to do with Tolkien. I have to admit that I DID watch the movies before I read the books, but I guess you can forgive me that one sin. My father, who is a HUGE Tolkien fan, practically begged me to read the books because he thought that they were some of the finest literature ever written. Seeing as my dad is an amazingly intelligent person and quite the bookwormy scholar, I took his word for it and began to read "The Fellowship of the Ring". At this time, I was 10. I got three pages into it and decided that these books were too hard and too boring. However, one year when I was still in middle school my teacher assigned for us all to read "The Hobbit" and I could not put it down. I thought that since I was a year older, I might try the Lord of the Rings again and see if I could enjoy them better now since I loved their prequel. No such luck. I could not understand how I could love The Hobbit and not care for The Lord of the Rings. I let it go and decided that I would just try again to read them when I was older. The summer I turned thirteen, my father introduced me to Peter Jackson's LOTR movies, and I fell hopelessly, madly, passionately in love. I drooled over Legolas and admired Aragorn almost as much as I admired my own dad. I laughed at Gimli's personality and held reverence in my heart for Gandalf. It was more than just becoming a FAN of the movies, but I felt as if I had known each character intimately since I was a kid. I cried and bawled over the ending of The Return of the King for weeks on end, but it took a true Tolkien fan--my father (who else?)--to explain to me the true beauty of it. Immediately, I picked up the books and madly read the Trilogy. It was as if I had been thirsting for something like this forever and Tolkien had handed me a huge 5-gallon bucket of water: I drank and drank.
I am working on my own Lord of the Rings literature, and hope to enter it in a contest on this site eventually. Now, I have a confession. I am not your true-blue Tolkien fan, even though I would like to consider myself so. I have tried to read "The Silmarillion" but--alas!--once again I found myself at a drought. This book did not give me the same thirst-quenching sensation that the Trilogy did. In fact, I could not finish the first chapter. I have read none of Tolkien's other books besides the usual Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but perhaps I just need to wait it out as I did with Lord of the Rings at first. Maybe my Tolkien experience comes in waves, and I just need to wait out the tide for a bit longer. For now, I am content to fantasize my life in Middle Earth as I converse with the trees and sip a Cola.
Did I mention that I plan on going to college in New Zealand? Haha I am an American, and yet I am ready to pledge my allegiance to NZ's flag. It's so breathtakingly beautiful there, and besides--who wouldn't want to live in the country where Lord of the Rings was filmed?

Whoa, excellent intro, dear! One of the best I've seen in a long time... for real! Loved hearing about how you first got into LotR ect... your dad, indeed, sounds like a very wise man. It's funny how LotR can strike so many people in the very same way as you're describing. It's really beautiful.
I hope everything works out for college too.
anyways, welcome to AU! It's great to have a bubbly person joining us... so... welcome! lol i'm PD and if you need help or whatever, please, don't hesitate contacting me. I hope to see you around the place. Don't be afraid to post away and squeeze into whatever convos are taking place.

Hey, another new person around! Nice to have you; we're always glad to have more LotR lovers. Nice intro, as pretty much everyone else has said. Oh yeah...if you can't handle the Sil, I suggest skipping Ainulindale and Valaquenta. They're not so interesting, though the Valaquenta contains useful info about the Valar and the Valier mentioned later; if I were you I'd just refer back there when they're mentioned. The Sil's really just a collection of stories, they do follow a path and all but it's ok if you skip some things here and there.
