Graphic Maker's Cookoff 2010 planning thread
Yes the time has come again for the GMC [Graphic Maker's Cookoff]. Last year was a roaring success thanks to Aliana and I have high hopes for this year being so again. Now I want to do this properly, just like last year, so I though an official planning thread would be a good idea. Now for those of you who are unsure of how the GMC works here's a little explaination from Ammy:
The gist of the GMC is to get the most points. Points are earned based on the number of each graphic you have and winning the Daily/Weekly Challenges[see below]. An extra way to earn points will be to put a limited number of graphics in the “Other” section of your post in this thread for the judges to look at further. Most importantly, this is about improving as an artist and expanding your boundaries, so don’t be afraid to try new things.
So without futher ado, to the planning!
Hot Topics:
How long should it last?
Should there be a limited number of participants?
What points system be set at?
What should be the "theme" for this year?
What are your suggestions for the daily/weekly challenges?
Should we split it up into two parts like last year?
Should we have seperate threads for posting and comments like last year?

Also; I have been in touch with Ammy and she is too busy to organise the GMC this year, but is happy for me to lead things. She will probably be participating still though. She is also looking into the results from last year for us.

Official planning! Whee! And I will officially sign up to help with the planning committee.
How long should it last?
I thought 10 days was good from last year.
Should there be a limited number of participants?
No.
What points system be set at?
I think the way they were was pretty good.
What should be the "theme" for this year?
I really like the idea of the world/major cities. One for every day. It also is nice since we're such a universal forum.
What are your suggestions for the daily/weekly challenges?
I dunno. I was generally not able to do most of them last year, so I'm not much help in that.
Should we split it up into two parts like last year?
I liked it. I should think it should be ultimately up to the organizers, though, as they'd have to do the work for it. But I think it's nice. Gives more people a chance to participate.
Should we have seperate threads for posting and comments like last year?
Egads, yes! The amount of time it takes for things to load, and the general "clutter" of the posting thread? We need another place just for the comments.
Also, a few other questions:
Should the avatar for matching sets be counted as avatars? I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like that's not really putting work into it. It's just cropping down something else you've done. I would think avatars would be things specifically made as avatars.
When we put things in the "other" section, do we take them out of their original sections? I know I did, but not everyone did. This is a question more for the judges, I guess. Is it confusing when doing points to have them in two places?

I is joining, though you guys who are more experienced might have to lead me through it a bit.
Because this is my first year doing this, I'm not going to post the survey thing like Nurr did, but I agree with most of her ideas, especially the one about Avatars being separate from their banner counterparts.

^Meaning avatars that are made from existing banners (like a sig set) shouldn't count - avatars should be made solely and not cropped from a banner - does that make more sense, Goatcloset?
Aye, I be a PSP user as well, and I must say it's fantabulous but definitely falls short when compared to Photoshop.

Right. As in, this : : one shouldn't count, since it was made from this : : banner, but this : : one can since it was made purely as an avatar.

It is much too easy to just crop from an existing sig so it shouldn't count... it challenges us as graphics makers to actually develop icons by themselves!
I too agree with everything Nurr said... all we'll need is to pick and choose world/major cities to use for the daily challenges!
I'd like to be a participant! I've always loved GMC *heres hoping I can get out of my third place rut xD*

Hey guys. I am really encouraged that you all are continuing this.. I can help plan/judge if you need it. You guys seem to have the gist of this down, though.

Those are some great ideas JF! I really like the idea of doing what a city is famous for!
Since there are 7 continents we can do one for each of the daily challenges...
So Monday: North America: create a graphic that symbolizes the USA... etc... or something like that.

Since I've judged for the last two years, I'd be more than happy to do it again If Im around when y'all decide on some dates!
Also, will this be a two-part event like last year, or will you be making it a one-shot thing?

Wow, I have no idea where I've been or why I haven't noticed this. I don't think I plan to participate in the actual GMC this year (I always get really tired and frustrated that I can't make as much as everyone else), but I'd love to be part of the planning!
Was there any official judging or awards last year? I don't remember seeing any. Well, I'd love to be a judge if you need one!
