As summer has rolled around again, Ara and I have both brought up RotR. So let's get to planning! A few thoughts:
From feedback after last year, I noticed a few things:
-Having it the whole summer long just drags it out and lowers participation.
-Too many balls.
With that in mind, here are a few questions:
Code: How long should it be? Should we have a ball/balls? If so, how many? What kind of events should we do? Do you want to help plan?

How long should it be?
Maybe the span of a month, we could have competitions and the like for the span of two weeks each month so that people can contribute.
Something I am doing on LJ is a challenge where people are divided into four groups: Lorien, Gondor, Mordor, and The Shire and are competing with graphics, writing, and other challenges to get points...
does this make sense?
Should we have a ball/balls? If so, how many? Of course, it is fun to have some RPing with our friends and husbands/wives etc... Maybe one big one...
What kind of events should we do?
^ I kind of explained it in the first question...
Do you want to help plan?
Heck yes!!

How long should it be? What Pandora said
Should we have a ball/balls? If so, how many? No more balls, I don't think they are that popular anymore and well, I never participate in them because they sort of lose their spark after a while.
What kind of events should we do? I like Pandora's idea, with each group competing in different things; maybe randomly assign people to their groups via PM?
Do you want to help plan? Of course, I'm always here if you need help!

We can maybe do a random questionaire with set houses for each question...
How many pets do you have?
1
2
3+
0
And then like 1 pet=Shire 2 pet=Gondor etc... that way no one can rig themselves into Lorien and what not <3
*Though we can change up the places to Rivendell over Lorien or Rohan over Gondor if you wish... just it should encompass the races... if we get enough participants maybe we can even add Moria for the dwarves!

I like the idea of the groups a lot. We need something quirky for this year and that could be it.
I also think to try and enourage more people or to get more people partcipating, if there could be none contest ways to win points, because not everyone around here can write/make graphics etc.
I was thinking it would be pretty neat if perhaps there was something that people could post around the forum that directly relates to their group.... like almost a way to get a quote from their race in a post or something. And not just like adding "my precious" at the end.
I'm still working on it, but I think something like that, might give non-writers etc something to work towards.

Yes I agree JF.. what we do in the community on LJ goes as follows:
Graphics
Writing
LotR Quizzes
Word Finds
PicSpams
Mazes (our maze spelled out Pippin)
FallingWords
etc...
So it gives people the opportunity who don't write or make graphics the chance to do something for their groups!
Not sure if you guys can access this: http://community.livejournal.com/themiddleearth/

I love the idea of having other non-graphics/writing related point systems, especially like with word finds and other little "games" as Pan mentioned.
I'm sure it would be easy to make quizzes as well, with Quizilla or some other site, and then just direct users to it... I'm sort of getting a whole carnival vibe from this - like what if when they play the games we give people prizes (banners or something similar)?

There is this one site called Quizardry. I don't know if anyone knows about it, but I really like playing their quizzes which people can submit when they sign up for free.
There are already LOTR quizzes on there (and we would have to trust people not to cheat and google the answers) but it might be neat if we had our own LOTR quiz that was slightly harder. Then people could use the Print Screen button and let people see their score.
This is the best one as it's places and even weapons rather than just characters and actors.

Love these ideas! Really, really good stuff. We should probably start thinking up some dates and things so that we can get them set and get people's participation. And how we will divide up into teams.
I was thinking that if we did mid-June to mid-July we'd probably manage to catch most people for at least some of it.

Mid-June to Mid-July works wonderfully, maybe sometime near June 18 (as that's when I'm officially done with Junior year) until sometime in July, and then the GMC follows it. <3
And not really related, but I love your advertising banner, Nurr, 'tis gorgeous

Agreed to everything that was mentioned above! Though there may be some days I am missing, not sure which days though...

How long should it be? A few weeks, but not all summer. Maybe 3-4 weeks?
Should we have a ball/balls? If so, how many? One ball, with some sort of contest in it.
What kind of events should we do? Graphics... RP... writing contest
Do you want to help plan? Sure thing!
I will be gone for some segments of the summer, but I don't know exactally when.

We were swamping the GMC board with RotR planning so I've moved it over here... to answer Nurr you sure can be!
If you have any questions about what you don't understand let me know since I brought up the idea...
What I was thinking was we start five boards in the contest thread or whatever...
Team Mordor
Team Shire
Team Gondor
Team Lorien
Team Moria
and then within those boards is where the members of each can discuss and whatnot and the team leaders will keep track of points and keep team morale going... does that make sense?

A thought on the balls:
I know at some point there was talk of doing a Hallowfest-type event in the summer. What if we did something like that, only RotR-themed, where there's some sort of mystery that relates to LotR? I know Hallowfest is the only Ball event that people really post in and that might get people interested.
Just a thought. It could be separate from the contest part, or tied in somehow.

Oooh, Moria! Dwarves!! *hint hint*
Hmmm.... I don't think a murder mystery would be the right theme for ROTR... especially as it might be too similar to the Hallowfest... but I definitely think if we could come up with some kind of storyline say for a costume party, that would require people to participate. Like a treasure hunt or something. Where the guests have to follow clues to get to the treasure, and like the Hallowfest the clues would be thrown out to the guests whenever.

I was actually thinking about something along those lines too, Skitty, some form of RP event that would be in place of the ball. I didn't know how to get away from the murder part of it, but I like JF's idea of a treasure hunt. We could have it be an "across Middle Earth" hunt or something to tie it to RotR.
