For sure - they're my 2nd favourite band after Blind Guardian.

And I recommend Blind Guardian. Their Silmarillion concept album (Nightfall in Middle-earth) might interest a number of people here.

^ It's the only Blind Guardian album I own for the time being lol It's a masterpiece, really. And Finntroll is great as you said lol

I don't know many out there listen to black metal but I would recommend Summoning. It's all Tolkien influenced; Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion. It's my favorite band.

I´ve heard about the Summoning and I like their song "Mirdautas Vras" which means in the Black Speech "It is a good time to kill".

Faun [Folk]- I was quite the fan back in the day, now I'm more of a quiet supporter. :teehee: They're folk, use a lot of traditional ( mostly medieval ) instruments and just make really nice music with mythic and folkloric themes. I especially recommend 2 Falken (female voice, nice lyric), Egil Saga (based on the famous epic!) and Von der Elben ( uhmm..it's about elves and has a nice harp tune)

For some atmospheric "darker" music, try Autumn's Grey Solace. The girl's voice is amazing, the music ephemeral, etheral and ever so slightly spooky at times. And often melancholic. Especially good; The Rhythm that Writhes (more guitar-fueled), Fluttermouth ( somewhat more relaxing) and The Moon Noctural ( more spooky).

Thanks :D

Also I'm looking for more symphonic metal, non-mainstream alternative/rock, or relaxing stuff. Any recommendations, anyone?

^ I actually hated Karkelo. And their new song Tequila is just ridiculous and stupid. Wonder what type of alcohol they'll be chanting about next. I honestly don't expect much from this upcoming album. At all. This band lacks in quality and keeps releasing the same sounding stuff over and over again (only the stuff was actually decent before Karkelo). My boyfriend calls them the Motorhead of folk metal for that reason - only Motorhead doesn't suck.

I thought Karkelo was awesome, especially their cover of Juodaan Viinaa - pure epic brilliance!

I don't get when people complain about a band releasing stuff that sounds the same. If the same person writes all the songs and you have a certain genre or style of music you're sticking to (as most bands do), then yeah it's going to come out sounding pretty much the same. If you like a band for what they're doing, why would you want them to deviate from that?

I mean, how can you not love a band singing about booze, in Finnish no less, while playing the accordion?

Well that's your opinion and that of others who still like them, and I respect it. I just find them to have become extremely boring and stale for me. And a lot of people agree with me. I didn't mind Vodka, but the Tequila thing pretty much made me lose interest in them completely. Anyway, if I wanted to keep listening to the same thing over and over again, I'd just pull up their old albums. No use in listening to the new stuff that I just can't get into.

So, while perusing through youtube I came across a band that I am currently obsessed with. How have they been around for so long and I am only now hearing them...

Anyway the band is X Japan a metal rock explosion of awesomeness as I call it.

Their 29 minute song, Art of Life, gave me chills from beginning to end. I shall be stalking their songs on youtube for the next few days.

They just did a tour in 2010, another reason why I am mad that I didn't know about them before because I would have gone to see them. What I can be excited about is there new album that is said to be released in 2011!!!

Really, you should check them out... it has a sort of trans-siberian feel with the instruments and lights... at least that is the only thing I was reminded of xD
