I never read the books but I actually want to now after having read about the movies and tv-series based on the books. The first movie is supposed to premiere May 17th 2013. Then there will be other movies and a tv-series to connect the series.. somehow...

I have read them, and I highly recommend them, but you definitely have to have read previous Stephen King novels to get them, I think, because he has a very...different style that may come across as just vulgar to some. Some of the topics he touches on are shocking or uncomfortable.

But of all his writing, the Dark Tower series blows everything else completely out of the water. It's brilliant, it really is.

As for the making of a movie/tv series/whatever else, I'm not sure how I feel about it, especially since there have been very few Stephen King books that translated well into film. Like, there's Pet Sematary, The Shining, Misery and The Green Mile. But there have been dozens of others that have been made into tv series or movies that just were absolutely awful. I'm hoping Dark Tower works, but I just can't see it truly happening.

Ohhh I don't know how I feel about this. Especially since the first book is just "They walked around the desert. And then they walked around some more."

I stopped reading DT after Wizard and Glass because I couldn't stand any more of Roland's Gary-stu-ness. He was great in the first few books, but now the way the other characters react to him annoys me. I plan to finish them someday, though, and yes I would definitely recommend them. Stephen King's worldbuilding is the best I've ever seen in fantasy, hands down.

I wonder whom they'll cast as Roland?

Eä- I've read them, too, and they're brilliant (at least I thought so :])! They were actually my first introduction to Stephen King. I've only read a few other books of his since then, but those definitely made me a fan 8). I'm honestly ecstatic to hear that movies are going to be made from them =)! The whole time I was reading the novels, one thought that was constantly in the back of my mind was that they absolutely screamed to be made into films. I'll definitely check out that link, so thanks for posting it 8)!

Lady Dark Moon- It seems that book was the one in the series that people had the most trouble getting through. I managed to do it, but my guess is the reason for that is I was interested in learning about his past. Being that that made up most of the book, it's understandable that it's a task to read :].
I'm curious about that, too. My top pick personally? Viggo Mortensen. It was probably because the LOTR films were showing in the theatres at the time, but I always pictured him when Roland was being described. Someone I know online suggested Christian Bale, but I think he might still be a bit too young when the first movie comes out. I always figured Roland to be in his forties, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Bale will still be in his thirties then.
