I made a special trip to the video rental store to get this the day it came out.  I was a little scared that my expectations would be too high and I'd be disappointed, but you know, I think it was even better than my expectations! It was so funny and clever and moving and, well, everything everyone else has said.  I think I have a new favorite as well! _________________

It is definitely worth watching. If you have any interest at all in dramas, this is a movie to see.

Started watching The King's Speech last night, and I finished it today. I didn't really have a high expectation of it, so I wasn't anxious that it would live up to my own personal hopes and wishes.
It is probably one of those films that comes around once every 5 years, if we're lucky. It was perfect. The writing, the sets, the look, the feel, the sound, the performances. Everything had a purpose, everything had a place and everything worked. It was simply a film that had a story to tell and it did it without shouting "look at me am I not going to win awards". *coughcoughTheQueencoughcough*
I can't rave enough about Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. If you didn't feel any sympathy for Bertie in the first scene, then he failed as an actor. But immediately Colin Firth had you emotionally connected to him, and that connection never, ever left. You felt sorry for him, you twitched nervously for him when his public speaking caused him embarrassment, you smiled when he for one moment, seemed at ease with himself playing with his children, and you silently (or not so silently) cheered when he overcame his fears and problems, even if only for a few minutes. The fact that not only did he perfect a speech impediment, but he perfected the movement and look of a man not comfortable with the things life threw at him, someone nursing hurts that were deep down inside him, and someone lacking in confidence. I can easily see why he won all those awards.
I can only think of one reason why Geoffrey Rush has been applauded as the supporting actor in this film. That reason is if both he and Colin Firth had been entered in the same category, the votes would have been split and someone else most likely would have won instead. His screentime alone states that he was not a supporting performer, not to mention the amount of detail we learned about Logue's life, and how throughout much of the film, his life was shown in parallel to Bertie's. I really cannot imagine anyone else portraying this cheeky and cherry Australian with as much bravado as Geoffrey. Words actually fail me when I try to describe how brilliant I thought he was in this. I loved watching Logue and Bertie together, it was a great double act of fun, compassion and friendship. Not without a fair bit of cussing.
Not forgetting Helena Bonham Carter. She was really wonderful in this, much more toned down than her usual performances, but with a great deal of wit and fun about her character still. I think this film lovingly and subtley makes it clear, that she is the thing that keeps Bertie going. I loved the scene when he started to cry about being King and she was comforting him. It was so sad to see him like that, but so touching that she didn't care that here was her man, in tears and that is was a sign of weakness, because she loved him no matter what.
And in a weird way, considering that it is basically a film about a man overcoming a stammer, it's probably one of the most uplifting films there has been around recently. I know I came away all the better for watching it.

I'm wondering why your expectations of the movie were so low in advande JF? A movie with three lead actors like Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter screams "QUALITY" don't you think? But I'm glad you liked it. I also loved this movie and the soundtrack was wonderful!  Especially the piece during the final speech-moment. But then, I enjoy Beethoven's music very much. _________________

Well when I say low, I mean when it came out I didn't really think too much of it. It looked good from what I saw, but the fact that everyone was raving about it made me wary in as much as if I had went into it expecting it to be as good as everyone said, and it wasn't, I would have been disappointed, so instead I went into it hoping it would be good and it far, far exceeded my expectations. It probably didn't help that the last major film surrounding a monarch, I abolsutely loathed as I knew more about The Queen from watching BBC documenatries. And unlike Colin Firth who became the King, Helen Mirren merely impersonated the Queen, and garnished her performance with things that everyone deep down hopes the Queen is really like, when we all know it's a lie. So I was definitely keeping opened minded about this, and not thinking too much about how good it was going to be.
Yeah, Queen-hating rant over. God save the King.
