i love's shakespeare's creativity with words, and i love the way he could be so subversive (just look at his sonnet cycle - several of them mock traditional sonnets, and over half are written to another man), and i think that he saw into the hearts of people more clearly than anybody else ever has. the poetry and rhythm of his drama demand that it be heard rather than just read, and for me that is the mark of a good play - plays are meant to be performed, so they should make you want to perform them.

i think we brits should be very proud of our literary heritage, and shakespeare in particular.

Wow, this seems to have woken Ethelfleda up :P :teehee::Lol:
When we have been readin Othello in class, I generally get stuck with the part of Iago on the basis that "I make him sound really realistic."
Whether this is a good thing is another question :teehee:

^ haha. yeah, i think you have woken me up. sorry i haven't been around for a while.

if you make iago sound realistic, that's definitely a good thing. well, unless you follow brecht's theories on theatre... anyway, i think it's a good thing.

Thas ok mate. Welcome back and all

But when they say that, Im sure there is the implication IM a bit like Iago. And while I think the man is a genius (albeit and evil one *shrugs*) he does do some slightly bad stuff :P:P

hugs back

i'm sure they don't mean you're like him. geez, if i was like evey character i've been asked to play, i'd be a little worried - i've been a gun-obsessed teenager, a stupid meglomaniac god, an evil goblin queen, a selfish toad, and a child-killing soldier, to name but a few.

And the therapy bills have been mounting up ever since eh?:lol:

I think you were right in what you said earlier; that we should be proud of our literary tradition. Shakespeare is performed, studied etc in many places across the world. We have many other distinguished writers, another being Tolkienm and many more that it would be exhaustive to write out.

 maybe therapy would have been a good idea...or not

i know i'm biased but i honestly believe that we have the greatest literary tradition in the world - russia may have its composers, germany may have its engineers, and italy may have its painters, but we have our writers.

Depends whos paying for the therapy doesnt it? :P:P
I know we are all biased, but look at it on the basis of evidence. We do have loads of good writers, both past and present, and besides, we have to be good at something worthwhile like writing :P
Can't let Europe outclass us in that :P

And actors.

You're right though. We do have the best writers. Tolkien, Dickens, Austen to name a few.

Oh! I understand now. XD

I haven't read any of Shakespeare's work. I haven't got English this semester, unfortunately, but apparently we'll be reading and studying Twelfth Night.

I'm a HUGE Austen fan! It's very true, England has produced some of the world's best, most-recognized and appreciated authors in history, as well as some of the most talented actors and actresses.

I'm always postive... aren't I? :P :teehee:

Seriously, at quite a few things, the British are the best. If if it's things like theatres productions or even staging sporting events, or having good coverage of important events.

We may be a small island... but by golly, we're up there with the bigguns of the world!

Yes, and I am REALLY lord of Death in RL :P:P:P

We are the best, because we've had plenty of practise. As for being up there with everyone else, we had a massive empire, that had one quarter of the earth surface in its domain.
Pretty big :teehee: so i suppose we are already up there with the bigguns :p

You might be.... I don't know....

I think sometimes though people misjudge us and just how well we can do things usually because of what some people believe Britain is all about. Scones and cucumber sandwiches and all that.

the scones and cucumber sandwiches are just a cover to make everyone think we're soft and useless. that way, we have the element of surprise. haha.

to be honest though, i think we should keep quiet about the british empire. not our finest moment, in many ways.

You only have to hear what people on AU think about the English accent, to know your right about that Lammy. That and the fact Hugh Grant is English and people seem to think that his accent is that of a typical Brit :P

I am quite taken with the American and Scottish accents myself. Oh, and French and Russian but only sometimes. :teehee:
