I wonder if there are classes, cos I do agree with you on that point. Then again, most people in Wales talk to you in english as its like the universal language, which is pretty good.oh well lol

I spose yes. Welsh has had to be sort of in its own way "revived" so that it didnt die out. We have so many strange but ok languages and accents in teh UK, so why dont we learn them to preserve them? I mean, most of the French speak english anyway, but still speak french. We learn english, but thats not to say that we should let languages that are on our doorstep fade just because of that

hello everyone! sorry i haven't been in here in a while - i've just started a summer job, so life's been a little crazy recently.

i definitely agree that more people should learn the more marginalised british languages - it would be terrible if they died out.

from the point of view of an english student, i also think it's important that old and middle english are still studied. they may not be spoken any more, but if they were allowed to completely die out we'd lose our appreciation of how the english language has developed; and it would be a real pity if we could only read old and middle english literature in translation, because nobody would be able to go back to the original texts and discover new subtleties in them. i'll learn basic old english next year at uni, and i simply cannot wait - the geek in me is incerdibly excited by the idea of being able to read beowulf in the language it was written in.

IM with ya there. One of my friends is a translator and he said to me one time, that you can NEVER get a perfect translation. You can get a really very good one, but never a perfect translation from one language to another. So, for stories that were written in old english, why not learn the language as you say? And as you said, helps us appreciate the evolution and what has made modern english what it is.

Double post alert I know, but its a pretty ya know.... British issue (well, to my knowledge anyways)
GCSE/A level results. I got mine on thursday, and what bugs me is that already they are starting to say "Oh the exams are getting easier bleh bleh bleh." Me for one, I think the exams are either getting marginally harder or the same. And maybe its just that we are getting more intelligent or summat. Its just seems to me that the media has a tendancy to report mostly grim news, and rather than celebrate generally increasing pass rates, it makes the several years of work on projects and exams seem worthless, which gets on my nerves no end. Perhaps they should take the exams if they know so much.!!!

You have quite a point. I got my exam results Thursday as well, and even on our local news they were talking about how much easier people think these exams are. Really, I say? When was the last time said people took an exam like the GCSEs? I thought they were extremely hard, almost ridiculously hard! As you said, pass rates are great, why not report on that instead?

By the way, I assume you did well Lamenter?

I agree totally on that. Its just stupid that our media dont rejoice in something that is good. We've worked hard and so have the teachers and its insulting to make it seem like that its for nought.
And I have no problem posting my results... as long as someone else does as well
