Niko felt her sobbing and her sadness. She believes I am still dead. Do not cry angel, I'm here He would never surrender his life, not while she still loved him and he remained her husband. He tried to move or speak, to tell her he was alright, but he was too weak. All he could muster was to let out a soft groan as his fingers began to twitch, finding life.

She gasped. Was that a...? She looked down, tears still streaming from her eyes. It couldn't be...yes! His fingers twitched! He was alive! She hurriedly set his head on the pillow and pulled the covers up over him. She bathed his face in cool water, laying the cloth on his forehead as she massaged his arms and hands. She still wept. He was still in danger. "Niko...please stay with me..." her voice sounded rusty from all the crying.

Niko lay on the bed as she looked after him. He knew he was still not entirely safe. He slowly reached for her hand, desperate for the comfort her touch gave him. He fought to stay conscious, knowing that he could not risk falling asleep as he may not waken. Niko looked at Nienna, her eyes were bloodshot and she was still crying. It broke his heart to see her so. He would never give her up.

She grasped his hand with one of hers, her available hand bringing another glass to his lips, this time it was ale. After he drank some, Nienna buried her head on the bed at his side, her one hand grasping his, the other slung over his belly. "Don't go...don't die again...please..." her voice was hardly above a hours whisper, if even that. She couldn't let him go. It was all her fault...she wept harder still.

Niko couldn't bear to see her as upset as she was. He squeezed her hand gently, willing her to know that he did not blame her, it was not her fault. As he drank the ale his throat felt light. ''My....angel'' was all he could say. His voice was raspy, stretched almost. His breathing became steadier yet it was still weak. He grasped her hand, never wishing to break her touch.

She felt a draft and pulled another blanket onto Niko. She found a chair and sat by his bedside, never taking her hand from his. He had died in her arms that night, and she hadn't been ableto stop it, she had been helpless. She should have stayed Awake, she should have protected him. It seemed as though there were no end to her tears. She gave him more ale then, hoping it would strengthen him.

He felt warmer under another blanket. How well she looked after him. As she gave him more ale he felt strength begin to return to his body. He hoped that his weakness was passing. Niko moved his free hand over his heart ''For you'' he managed to say. He felt safe with her watching over him, and it saddened him to see her so upset. He knew she blamed herself. Niko tried to tell her through his eyes, it wasn't her fault, if anything she had saved his life.

Fresh tears fell as he told her "for you". He had been ripped away from him for an instant. For a very real, painful instant. She laid her head on his hand, aware she couldn't do anymore for him physically. She could pray, and she could will him to get better, but she had done all she could. She left him momentarily to start a fire, then came right back to his side. A ghost of his former self remained, what was once a strong, tanned, rugged, handsome man was now a deathly grey ghost lying on the bed, all strength passed from his body. She couldn't bear it. She grasped his hand again, and imagined her own life and strength flowing into him. It was preposterous, but she needed that hope. "Don'you dare leave me..." she whispered, "Dearest husband, my beloved Niko." she presses a kiss to his fingers, her lips trembling.

Niko lay there, his gaze and thoughts only on Nienna as he fought to stay awake. For a while Niko could only look at Nienna, wishing her not to feel pain, until he began to respond to her touch as his body slowly began to warm. ''I will...... never leave you..... Le Melon'' He pulled at her hand, willing her to come closer to him. Niko needed her.

She sobbed and sat on the bed, her head laid on his chest, her arms encircling him. She willed him to get stronger, to live. She listened to his faint heart beat, remembering how strong it had been before. It broke her. She trembled from fear, worry, and her concern for him.

''Do not cry'' he managed to say. ''I'm here'' He was able to bring her hand to his lips and kiss it. His chest still was sore and still bore the black mark, yet she brought him strength. Niko began to be able to breathe easier and some of the color began to return to his face.

She eased up and moved the pillow, placing his head on her lap. She leaned down and kissed his forehead and, upon seeing the slight color change, she began to have hope. Tears of joy mingled still with her ones of sorrow. "Niko, love, how can I not cry?" she caressed his hair, moving it off his damp brow. She grabbed the cloth and began to gently wash the black mark, aware that it still bore him pain. She knew not if it would help, but she would try anything to bring him more comfort.

As his color began to return to his face, so did his sense of humor. ''Have yourself some ale, ale always helps'' Niko began to laugh before coughing, not as violently as before but it increased the pain in his chest. It subsided slightly as Nienna put the cloth to his chest, the mark itself wasn't moving but his pain began to slowly lift.

She half sobbed half laughed. In truth, she couldn't drink right now. Or eat. Not until he was out of any danger. She held his as he coughed, and rinsed the cloth before wiping at the mark again, noticing how it brought some degree of comfort to him. She held another glass of ale to his lips, knowing he would appreciate that and she knew it would dull some of the pain. "All I care about is that you get well again."

He accepted the ale gratefully. ''You take such good care of me. I truly do not deserve you'' As he drank the ale, he began to feel better. He no longer felt dizzy and his chest began to let up. He was still weak but he was getting better. ''Must I beg for another kiss?'' He laughed softly.

Her face twitched "You deserve much better than me." she had brought this upon him. She laughed at him and smiled through her swollen eyes before leaning down and placing a feather soft kiss on his lips. She could tell he was gaining his health again, and she was relieved beyond what words could describe. She tended him still, though, her worry taking over.
