Oooh...so tempting. I'm a little reluctant though...I would LOVE to, because it would be a great way to meet people on the site I might not talk to otherwise, but I'm worried/unsure as to how big of a time commitment it will be...so tell me, does signing up for Hallowfest mean I sign my life away?

@ Arabella... I would say just be careful not to get carried away. One can go on all night, trust me! But like JF said, you can come and go as you like. The only real commitment is if you get killed, you should come back and give us your clue as soon as you can, preferably by the end of the day or something. Otherwise the plot gets held up a little. It's worth it, though. Being killed is really fun.
The most important thing (which JF mentioned and which I was actually planning including in the "Headquarters" post) is do not try to read through all pages you might have missed. Some people have had problems in the past when they log in after being gone all day and, depending on their time zone and what happened, there could be 20 pages of role playing. Then they get so overwhelmed and frustrated that they feel like they have to quit the thing because they can't keep up. But the thing to remember is most of that is just people talking and (hopefully!) having fun and is unimportant to the murders and the plot, and therefore a bit of a waste of time to read through. When important things happen, like a murder or clue, I'll post a link to the page where it occurs in the first post, so you can go directly there to read it. There will also be the daily summaries (again like JF said, much more succinctly ), which will describe what everyone did that day, so you don't feel completely left out if you missed it.
Also, if you still feel like you're not keeping up, or if you're kind of OCD and you hate not reading the whole thing (*cough*likeme*cough*), I'd recommend checking back as often as you can, but without posting. Posting is kind of a time commitment, but it hardly takes any time at all to come on, skim through a few posts which might have appeared, and then go about your day-- to check back in another hour or so. It's sort of obsessive, but it works. You can save all your posting for whenever you have time for it.

It's all a ton of fun, and with the Hallowfest it's definitely "the more the merrier," so we'd love to have you!

I'm having a little trouble deciding whether or not I should create a character or just go as "myself." What do most people usually do?

^ Hm, it depends. If you don't get any inspiration for an alias, then you can go as yourself. I've done both, and I think a character is more fun, but harder, especially if she's a neurotic narcissus. You always forget to sign in with your new username, too. But if it helps, I can tell you that from most of the profiles I've gotten so far, most are characters.

It's actually part of the fun to figure out who people are, I think. Most of the time you can tell because it changes for all your old posts as well, and so you'll recognize someone's old posts and figure out who they are. Every year there's a few that I can't crack, though. But I know I've fooled some people with my character, too!
