Haven't seen a thread for this yet so I thought I'd start it.

There were literally tears pouring down my face when I watched this (although since I've read the book and seen the stage play, I already am emotionally attached to the characters to a ridiculous degree). Looks like it's going to be fabulous though -- the cast is amazing, the soundtrack is going to be brilliant because it's John Williams, and of course it's such a lovely story.

My boyfriend took me to go see this movie. It was... wow.

Inspiring and heart warming at times.
Tear jerking and depressing at other.
But you also have that sense of comedy at one or two places.

There was one point that made me flinch and cringe so bad I had my boyfriend worried. But the visuals were beautiful, not to mention the horse!

Argh 13th Jan hurry up! Why do we Brits, have to wait longer than the Americans for a British Written, British Starring, Adaptation of a British Book and Successful British Play </end patriotic grumbling>

I literally can't wait to see this though. Based on the fact I cried for 90% of the Play and the book had me going to, I know I will be blubbing watching it. Horse films always make me cry. It'll be interesting to see how Speilberg gets Joey's expressions across, he's not doing the Black Beauty/ Spirit voice over thing, and a real horse doesn't have the expressive range of the puppets of the play.

Gotta Add how pleased I am for Jeremy Irvine (Albert). His family are local to mine and our Dad's know one another pretty well. And to think I thought that nothing interesting happened locally! I hoping this film gets nominated (and wins) a ton of oscars

My mom and I went to see it last night and we bawled our eyes out. It didn't help that all the previews before the movie were sad, too. I mean, seriously? A movie about 9/11? AND a preview for the 3-D re-release of Titanic? in front of an already sad movie like War Horse?

Anyway, I loved it. I loved all the different characters and I'm really curious to see how the play differs from the movie. I've only seen a small bit of the play (they showed some at the Tony Awards last year) but obviously you can do things on film that you can't onstage and vice versa.

And Lembas, I am very jealous that you know Jeremy. That boy is very nice to look at.

I feel kinda creepy saying it, cause he went to school with some of my classmates and uni mates - but I KNOW mmm!!! It's only my Dad that knows him though, through his work... unfortunately... still waiting on an introduction hahah! I do rather creepily know exactly where he lives, and strange gossip about how it came about he role and that he was smuggled out of the back of the theatre at the World Premier BEFORE the film had even started due to contracts... oh and that he's taken *sob*

Double posting, because I have no shame!

I be just got back from seeing it finally!

Now don't get me wrong I loved it, I cried like a baby at the end, the cast were flawless and all round it's a fantastic film.

But the play's better by miles.

I don't know if it's because I knew what to expect of the plot or what images I was going to see but I found the stage show much more of an emotional roller coaster. The stage show was stylised but more graphic and poignant in the fight sequences whereas the film seemed very glossy by comparison. Especially in the cavalry charge. I did like the going over the top sequence though. I also found it a bit slow in places when it didn't need to be and Topthorn's death was rubbish, but even the play couldnt manage to make it as here breaking as in the book.

I had a few other gripes about adaptaional changes, which I won't ramble on about.

Also Being a Ww1 historian in training a load of petty historical inaccuracies really really annoyed me. But most of that is due to me being completely anal and being taught by a well renowned ww1 historian who is also hugely picky and anal. So I'll forgive Speilberg, in part, for skimping on his research.

Still I really liked it. It was beautifully shot and The last scene was stunning. The horses were amazing too I'm surprised they got the amount of expression from them they did. Oh and the goose. The goose was perfect!

Ahh, Steven. He's getting quite sentimental in his old age isn't he?

T'was quite nice, definitely had that Spielberg feel, kinda felt like ET in some places. Probably because of the connection between human and non-speaking other character. I loved the little bits of humor in there, and I loved the short vignette about Emily & her Grandfather, perfect for that to be halfway through the film. What with the colours and the peace and quiet showing what the true victims of war are.

When I saw that big black stallion, I thought, WOW. But I'm still waiting for a film that has a vicious horse. Y'know, a big strong raging storm of a thing, capable of ripping a mans larynx out, but it seems horses are still type-cast as the gentle angelic Black Beauty stereotype. Which of course they are, but anyone who's spent time with horses knows they can be as silly and messy as dogs. And that if there's a mare in heat around, a stallion is quite capable of killing someone and even another horse. I thought that's what I was gonna get with the big black giant of a thing on legs, but, maybe next time.

Lith: I was a bit disappointed with what they did to Topthorn, in both the play and book him and Joey are left together to fight for dominance, before topthorn wins and the two becoming friends. The race I suppose was the glossy alternative. I suppose its something you can't stage with real horses without endangering both animal and crew, and I'm sure that as Joey was meant to be a unifying character then having him act violently would be a bit out of place too.

I know of a small Australian film called The Silver Brumby that had a pretty serious Stallion show-down in it, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid so I can't vouch for how convincing it was, lol. I still think it could have been done, I mean, if they can get a digital horse to jump into an 8 ft deep trench and then climb up said 8 ft wall in under two seconds flat I think a bit of horse play could have been pretty impressive.

Looks like I'm adding War Horse to my 'to read' list then!

I have now read the book and personally I think that parts of the movie were better than their coresponding parts in the book.

Lin: the silver Brumby! oh my was that a cartoon series too?, I think i remember watching it hahah there seemed to be a forest fire almost every week!

I agree it could have been possible with cg but i read Speilberg wanted to avoid using it except where necessary (eg horse jumps onto a tank), there were only 3 cg shots of the horse in the film and they were all hugely obvious, so I guess I can for give him for leaving it out. But seriously what is it about film-makers rebelling against cgi all of a sudden?

Nesse: I agree some bits are better than the book, most the ones from the start of the film are adapted from the stage play though. But the scenes with Emilie and the Final auction were much better handled

Being in America, I had never heard of War Horse until i saw the preview for the movie on TV at my grandma's. (since my home has no tv.) I saw the trailer and wanted to see the movie. Read the book shortly after seeing the movie.
