How can you survive without bookstores! :-O We have a fantastic second hand one, but B&N is nice when I'm wanting specifics.
I loved Borders. I thought their prices were pretty on par with B&N, but they had a better movie and music selection. For just sitting and reading, though, I'd go B&N. (At least in our town.) It has better nooks for hiding away and is much larger so easier to avoid other people.

I'm pretty bummed about the Borders closings as well. Their prices were pretty close to B&N, but sometimes I found them to be cheaper. Although the B&N in my area had a better DVD/CD collection than our Borders did.

I have so many happy Borders memories; I was devastated when they closed. There used to be a really nice one by the river and my mom and I would stop there all the time. The cafe always used to sell really delicious caramel apple smoothies. Ugh. I miss those.

^^ Those smoothies sound good! We've got a B&N about five minutes away, and the Borders was about 45 minutes away, so it's pretty obvious where we'd go more often lol
I couldn't live without a bookstore nearby.

Barnes&Noble does seem to pick the better locations, it's true. There's a few near me now, and a few near places that I go fairly often. It's nice--and I agree, how could anyone survive without a bookstore? I was in Tucson in January and desperately needed to buy A Storm of Swords, but there were basically no bookstores in the entirety of the city. It was the strangest thing. I ended up at some weird little hippy bookstore in a shady part of town, but I got what I needed (plus extra books, because I couldn't resist).

the way I survive without bookstores, is the fact that Minnesota has a super nice public library system, that i can order books from any library in the entire state and pick it up at my local one. All of the librarians at like three different small town libraries know me by name, and I am there a couple times a week most of the time.

I love the requesting system... we have something similar in Wisconsin. My family started watching Modern family this summer, and we requested all the DVDs from seasons 1 and 2 from the library - they came pretty quickly, and without having to pay the ridiculous movie store fees.

I would go crazy if I didnt have a bookstore. I once spent a blissful 5 hours in B&N reading in the cafe sipping hot chocolate, while my family was across the street riding go-carts and playin mini golf. Another reason I love B&N so much is its the only place I've been able to find the Sherlock Holmes movie soundtracks, and now that Borders is gone, its the only place close to me I can buy the Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett! Although I do miss the little chocolate frogs Borders sold, I know it sounds geeky but the made the Harry Potter fan in me happy when I got them. And I bought my calendars from there too, I'm not even sure if B&N has calendars, I've never looked before.

Oooh book discussions! Or at least, bookstore and library discussions! I have a love affair with my library in my hometown that's been going on since I was five. To this day I still prefer going to that library than buying books in stores, even though I love Barnes&Noble. Which is why I hate that my college campus library is SO AWFUL. Oh, they have tons of scholarly books, but try to find John Green or Cassandra Clare and you're out of luck. They don't even have any Gregory Maguire! My genre of choice is young adult literature, so apparently I don't count as a mature reader. I do love Barnes&Noble, and I actually got two books there recently and am planning another trip. I really want to keep up with my reading but I'm going to have to find creative ways to do that. I do have a Kindle, but I don't like it as much.

Lithy, B&N does have a rather good collection of things relating to Holmes, be it book or film. I once found a DVD in the sale section of something called "Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" and I was greatly amused. I'm still overwhelmed by my sorry little stack of books. I haven't finished A Dance With Dragons or Brideshead Revisited, which were my two projects last month, and I've got another book lined up too. I have to finish ADWD soon, though, because I really don't want to carry all ten pounds of it to school with me. xD I've also just remembered that I didn't scope out the bookstores around the university, so I think I'm going to go Google that right now.

^^ I've been struggling through A Feast for Crows since May, Skitty. I feel your pain.
Yeah, thankfully the Barnes&Noble near campus is only about a 15-minute walk. Plus, my roommate has her car with her this year, so that's nice. XD

I love my library. I have a librarian that loves Doctor Who, so we have a bunch of classics and all the new ones!

I underuse the library, but it's because I'm a bit of a snob and I don't like the idea of other people's fingers and food and who knows what else all over books that I'm reading. That's usually more of a problem with popular books, but some of the older ones are straight up filthy, and I ain't want none o' dat. I'd love to buy every book I like to read, but the shelves in my room are already overflowing We have a pretty decent bookstore nearby. Their instore collection isn't that huge, but they can order any book you like and deliver that within a week. But since I'm not really allowing myself to buy books anymore, I'm very happy with my library card. Their English section is a bit small, but one of their new features is putting up lists of new books, so you're able to put your name on a waiting list. Because I keep track of those lists I'm usually able to read the new books before anyone else, so it still has that wonderful new book smell, without having to pay the full price for it Because wow, books are pretty expensive

I have like $80 left in B&N gift cards, (I get them for my birthday every year lol) so I usually don't have much trouble with the price. I got my first copy of Sherlock Holmes at B&N as well. Lithi, I wish I could spend five hours in a bookstore! But with younger siblings it sorta becomes impossible.

Skitty, your qualms about libraries made me laugh XD I've really never had a problem with it, to be honest. I also feel the need to support my hometown library because to be honest, I feel it's dying. They keep having to cut back on things because of budget cuts. So far they laid off my favorite librarian, who used to run the YA section--she even had this amazing writing group for teen writers--as well as some other librarians, they've cut hours (reduced hours Wednesday through Saturday and not open at all on Sundays) and cut the interlibrary loan system. You can get books from other libraries, but not DVDs, CDs, or new titles. It's so sad!
